Reyes/White match

When White kicked at the ball he was intending to hit it and hopefully bank it down to the other end of the table. I don't think for a second that he intended to bank the ball down and make the nine ball. He just got lucky.

Reyes backwards bank was indeed a very good and smart shot. The reason he shot it was there was a ball on the end rail that if the shot came up a little short it would still go in off that ball.

Of course Jimmy didn't intend to make the nine but still the square hit and the result under those circumstances make it a great shot. How many us would miss the object ball altogether under those circumstances.

Efren's Z shot is the same. He hooked himself and had to shoot to just hit it. That he made it and got shape was just a result of his making a great attempt at the hit.

I don't want to take this thread in another direction but seeing as it's been dead for a few days perhaps you won't mind;)
Dr. Dave, as I looked at your site full of great matches I noticed you didn't have the Reyes vs. Bustamante 1999wpc semifinal match. I feel this would be a great addition to your already fantastic collection.

There are a few very good shots in here but no "omg" shots. Unfortunately it is spliced into 8 videos but it is well worth the watch, I promise. Jay Helfert hops into the commentators booth on video 6 and says this is the best 9ball he's ever seen and he said he was racking the balls for Earl when he ran 13 in a row. That's quite a statement coming from a man like him and I think after watching these videos you would find it hard to argue. I would love for Jay to chime in here and see if he still agrees with his statement 11 years later.
On a related note, the finals match between Reyes and Chang is also worth watching. Sheer dominance. Thanks again for the thread JB.

One of the all time great matches. Two friends and rivals who both wanted badly to win. Probably the best pool I've seen played in a match was when Shane put something unGodly on Ronnie Alcano in the hot seat match at the U.S. Open three years ago. He just played awesome pool on a VERY tough table.

Wu has never failed to impress me with his amazing ability. And watching Yang play for money is downright scary. Parica was the same for many years. It's one thing to play no miss pool and it's another thing to keep running out from nowhere. Yang runs out racks where everyone else on the planet would be looking for a safe. :smile-us-down:

Well, the "Banned" line under his avatar seems to be correctly formatted (i.e. first letter "B" capitalized, the rest lowercased), so it's probably for real this time. (You might recall some weeks back that John first put "BANNED" in all caps, but as people quickly pointed out this was just a "self-banning," he changed it to "PLEASE IGNORE ME" and continued to post anyway.)

If the banning is genuine (i.e. moderator actuated), I'm not sure what post did it. Posts involving the quartet "Patrick Johnson," "manwon," "Roger Long," and "JB Cases" had been deleted by the moderators if any one of these mentioned the other by name. The last post I saw was one by JB calling out the moderator about the logic of this action. Then again, it could've been a post that's since been deleted. Who knows?

I'm just sorry to see these intelligent folks do a death spiral over some really trivial stuff. They have so much to offer these forums.

You can tell if a poster is banned by the fact that the "add rep button" disappears on their posts. Look at his posts. His "rep buttons" are gone so he is definitely banned.

Thanks Jay for the quick response. I love hearing your stories and insight of the game. I particularly enjoy hearing you and JoeyA as well as your guests in the booth together. FYI .. I happen to find Sid Waddell pretty entertaining even if I don't understand what he's saying half the time. Lol
