10-ball rules question

Okay, in the game of 10-ball where you are playing called-shot with the option of giving a missed shot back to your opponent if they should accidentally "hook" you (or you also have the same option if the opponent should make a ball on a "called" safety), I was wondering if you can also give a missed shot back to your opponent even if you are not hooked? I mean, if your opponent misses a called shot, leaves a very tough shot (but not "hooked") and basically without a chance of a decent safe, can you still opt to give the shot back? This would be if the shot was just to difficult to attempt without giving your opponent the upper hand.

The incoming player always has the option to pass it back on a missed shot no matter what the result. The only time they MUST shoot is when the shooter calls safe.

Yes and no. Jude, I think you are referring to the rules as played at the SBE and on Tony Robles regional tour. But under World Standardized Rules (WPA) you have the option to give the table back on a miss ONLY if a ball is wrongfully pocketed. If this is the case then yes, you can give it back whether you are hooked or not.

If nothing goes in on a miss and there is no other foul, you have no option and must take the balls in position (rule 9.8).

The applicable rule is 9.7:

9.7 Wrongfully Pocketed Balls
If a player misses his intended ball and pocket, and either makes the nominated ball in the wrong pocket or pockets another ball, his inning has finished and the incoming player has the option to take the shot as is, or hand it back to his opponent.

Notice there is no stipulation that you must be hooked.

I understand the rules you kindly posted for me. But I was watching a live stream a couple of weekends ago of a tourney (somewhere in the Southern states region) where they were using an option to give the shot back on anything but a called safety. Because of the quality of the players present at this particular tourney, I never saw a player "give back" a shot that the cueball wasn't "hooked", so I didn't know if it was allowable to do so or not. They obviously were using some sort of variant of the WPA World Standardized Rules.

Because of the quality of the players present at this particular tourney, I never saw a player "give back" a shot that the cueball wasn't "hooked", so I didn't know if it was allowable to do so or not. They obviously were using some sort of variant of the WPA World Standardized Rules.

I imagine it would be allowed whether hooked or not. My guess would be that the reason no incoming player ever gave a shot back on a ball that he could see was because he would rather play the shot himself (or play a safety) than to give his opponent the choice of playing the shot or a safety. I would think in most situations where I can at least see the ball, I would prefer to play a safety (if not take the shot) and hopefully lock up my opponent rather than give him the chance to do it to me.

The OP, might be talking about the Dragon Promotions tournament at Emerald Billiards in New Iberia, La., which was last weekend.

Charlie Williams had some unique rules in place, but the one rule that seem to get most of the attention, was the in-coming player received BIH on all misses.

They could play unlimited safeties, but if a ball was pocketed on a called safety, the incoming player had choice.

Actually it was the one on the weekend before the DP tournament. It is the one that SVB was breakin' and shootin' like he was on a mission. He won the tournament. Corey was there, as were several other touring pros. I'm thinking it was at the Marietta Billiard Club in Georgia, but I could be wrong. It ain't easy gettin' old :sorry:!!!
