Darren Appleton am playing the legend efren bata reyes in his home town of angelas city manila saturday night 6pm race to 17 10ball already around £1500 in the middle.. we reckon be around 3-5k side betting..cant wait :-). its going to be sold out you can get tickets at miss magic bar.. be quick if want a seat..no more drinking for me lolon Thursday
 
Hmm, my off the head stab at the line: Efren favored 5:4 based on home court advantage and the relatively short race format.

Good for Daz for gettin down there and gettin down for the cheese against the Magician. I sure hope we get to see it somehow, someday.
 
IMO I would put this even. Efren IS the magician, but he is not himself from 10 years ago. Appleton is getting better all the time... or at the very least not getting worse. So again, IMO and trying to be realistic, I would call this an even match in this day and time.

I reckon the ole AZ Action room will have sumthin to say on this matter. I'll take 3:4 odds Efren gets the favored's line. :grin-square: :wink:
 
I agree with EVEN. Damn I wish I were there to sweat some of these matches. Won't be there for another three weeks :(
 
I like DAZ break for 10 ball. But, playing in Manila...In UK, just like US, I see no way to prepare for gambling in the same conditions. Just gambling in another country is difficult enough. Everything from hotels, food, transportation, climate...even the McDonalds is far different in each country. I would have to think that Efren would be favored.

Are they in Angeles City or Manila? In any case Darren will have a great time there

I was in Manila in 2006 WPC. The Efren on tv during the tournament was not the mad man i saw stealing peoples money at One Side at night. I saw Efren take Dazs' money then. I remember Imran Majid standing holding his cue in disbelief at what that "old man" was doing to him.

Daz is 10 times the player now than in '06 but we are talking about Efren in his element. I also know the PI is like Dazs' 2nd home and probably the reason his game has improved so much.

Efren is comfortable in any pool hall in Manila but he is "AT HOME" when he is in Angeles City. He might as well be in his underwear and flip flops. I've been there at least four times myself. Bong Pectus told me in '06 that if the WPC were "played up in the mountains" away from the tv camera's and the weight of the entire country expecting him to beat everyone 11-0 then he would have taken that tournament no problem.

Efren definitely has the edge in this match. I wish I was there to watch it will be an electric atmosphere with all the side action and cheering.

Angeles is only 50 miles from Manila. 120 pesos (less than $3) by bus. I've made the trip several times. This is a small city (but still crowded) where you see guys carrying cues everywhere you go. There is a 9' table in every bar and in most hotel lobbies. Money games are few and far between, but just about everyone plays on a bar team. There are league matches going on day and night.

You will even find cue makers with their own little stores right on the main drag. They have cues on display for sale and are building more right on site. Every shop has a photo on the wall with the cue maker alongside Efren, holding one of their cues. :smile:

You can stay in Angeles for $20-25 a night in nice small hotels. The bars are full of beautiful girls hoping to hook up with a nice guy. Did I mention that the main drag (Fields Ave.) is one bar after another. The old Clark Air Force base is now a commercial air field with flights all over Southeast Asia at bargain prices. Super cheap flights (try $50-60 RT) to all destinations within the Philippines, like all the nice resort areas - Cebu, Boracay, Palawan etc.

Our dollar goes even farther here than in Manila, much farther!
