Cuemaker Poll: Are You a member of either ACA or ICA?

And why did you join or not? Or your feeling about either Association!

The Answer is: No I'm not a Cuemaker. Just wonder which association or not AZ's Cuemaker Members belong to!

Its hard to believe , Not one reply - Whether from Hightower or Buss. Don't they believe in those own association????????????????

I'm a member of the ICA. I have been blessed with success and feel urged to give back to the organizations that helped legitimize cue building as an art. I am not biased toward either group. They both work to promote cues and set standards that continually elevate the art. Being a cuemaker, obviously I share their sentiments. If my membership dues can help promote the art I choose to create, then by all means it's the least I can do.

I'm not much of a joiner. I considered joining one of these groups, but my thought was, "what can I gain"? I'am in the twilight of my years & certanly of my cuemaking carreer. I don't want more business, than I can now handle & I don't need a group to tell me what to do. I am old school & if there was nobody there to help me in 1966, when I was starting out, then I don't need them now...JER

What qbilder said!
And I thank him for advice he's given to me.

I went with the ICA because I felt it was less political, and less restrictive.

I wouldn't want to belong to any organization that would consider someone like me to be a member.
Truth is, I've had a number of heated discussions back in the mid 90's over the reasons why I didn't want to join the ACA. I could see no benefits for me for my 300.00 a year. Back then it was very easy to get in and they had a glamor show once a year for their top fancy cue builders. I'm never going to win that competition. I was told that it would give credibility as a cue maker. If that is what I needed to sell cues then I don't need to be building them. I am very happy and content with my knowledge and cue making abilities so that I don't have to be reassured by a by a group of pears. Why are there so few, if any, top name cue makers who belong to those organizations?

this is also the factor why i did not force myself, It reminds me of what happen to my fellow pinoy cuemaker, May he rest in Peace..

Ica

I joined the ICA to gain knowledge and develop a comraderie of friendship with people who are less interested in politics and more interested in cue building and SHARING information. The international part also provides some interesting ideas. The ACA seems to be an exclusive organization rather than an inclusive one like ICA, IMO.

Thank all the cuemakers who answer the poll and post.

When I did a Cuemaker Tree of H. Martin I view both ICA and ACA for info.

ICA have no history as to which founding cuemakers form ICA.

ACA Mention this
in January, 1992, Leonard Bludworth assembled eight cuemakers in Columbia, South Carolina for the organizational meeting of what would soon become the American Cuemakers Association. This group of cuemakers realized the importance of communication between cuemakers and the strength that could be gained by acting together
.

Does anyone Know who those Cuemakers were for both ICA and ACA? I believe I read it in a past Billiard Publication!

The only real problem I see with either association is the individuals who believe they should be getting some kind of special service or benefit from their membership. Everybody's wanting to know what's in it for them. Given that perspective, yes it might be a waste of your money because unless you are taking advantage of the show booth discounts & supplier discounts, you aren't getting much as an individual. And frankly, an association may not be the kind of thing for folks who are concerned only about the personal rewards of belonging.

My point of view is that my membership somehow helps the cue building industry as a whole. I'm investing in OUR industry as a whole, understanding that my own personal benefits will increase as the industry grows & becomes more powerful. If we don't help ourselves & help each other, then nobody's going to.

It's about perspective. If you want something specific for yourself out of an association then you have missed the point. An association is where a group of like minded persons combine efforts to advance their subject as a whole, not individually. It's a cooperative notion. By doing so, every individual benefits.

I was a member of the ACA for about 15 years. I quit doing the shows which was about the only benefit to me. Then I let it be known that I planned to move to the Philippines and maybe make some cues there. I started getting the cold shoulder from a lot of the members so I let my membership lapse. Then I heard some things about how Dan Dishaw was treated and I'm glad I got out when I did. I thought about joining the ICA but I have a big problem with one of it's members who spread a bunch of lies about me, Ed Reyes and Linds and while I respect Chris and most of the members I've decided I'd rather not belong as long as this person did.

Cueman/Hightower hasn't responded because he is out of town. This is his daughter, Keisha. I'm checking his messages & keeping up with things while he is gone. I could respond to some of this, but I'm not voting or giving any opinions because I'm not even a cuemaker or a member of either of the associations & Dad should be able to state his stance himself. I just didn't want y'all to think he was hiding. Anyone who knows him knows that isn't his style, anyway.
