Mike Deschaine 11-3 over SVB.

The score raised my eyebrow a little but the fact that Mike beat Shane doesn't surprise me at all.
His game is at a point where he can beat anyone in the world in a race of 9 ball.

The tournament is seeded. Top 16 on WPA, Top 12 finishers from last year, past champions, and hall of famers. Shane and I were very upset that we had to play each other but there is nothing that could have been done. Plus there are a lot more than 32 great players in the tournament, so there were going to be some tough match up's.

Congrats, Mike!!!

And thanks for stopping by and posting in the midst of all this. We really appreciate it. It really is a treat to hear from any of the "pro's" and we are quite fortunate that you post here as often as you do, let alone during the week of a big tourney such as this.

Good luck the rest of the way!

Mike
Congratulations on a great performance, just keep going and see what happens. Hopefully the next time we meet will be in London in December ;)

Not a slam, just trying to help.
I would recommend you try out Mozilla Firefox browser. It offers the spelling corrections right after you type a word wrong. It underlines the word in red. You then right click on the word to get the correct spelling. It is the nuts.

LOL I lose my reputation if I spell checked anything. My spelling has improved a alot over the past 3 years here. LOL thanks for the advice, I do use spell check for business emails etc.

best
eric:)

I agree, I didnt want to say that. But since you did-its bullshit that you and Shane had to play so earily in the tournment, it's great for weaker players in the tournment but the guys playing for a living, and the rail birds lose out when 2 top players are the first match. And JA plays Ocollo in 30 minutes as their 2nd match, thats as bad as SVB and mike day 1.

Fatboy I agree, afterall what rankings? Who makes the rankings? Pool really dont have rankings that mean anything in my opinion. The good folks there should know that SVB and Dechaine is not like when an 8-9 seed match happens at March Madness. All the pool knowledge there should be able to rank at least the top 100 and probably the top 200 or so fairly accurately. Free entry fee players should not be seeded to high just cause. I think that type of match wasn't good for anyone, that's a Wednesday match or Tuesday night type of match...def not a Sunday match ever!

As someone NOT in the inner circle of players and close fans, I was surprised to read the Mike and Shane were on good terms. At last year's open, there seemed like there was some bad blood there. I have never met Mike (respect his game), but my opinion, which is drawn only from second hand talk, was that he sharked people quite a bit and wasn't liked by many.

Can someone clarify for me (them being friends)? I want to STRESS that I have no personal opinion of Mike, only an opinion based on second hand accounts by others that conflicted with Fatboy's post.

Ill be there Thursday! GOD its hard to sit at work for two more days before I go on Pool Sabbatical:)

I don't think it's close to a 100-1 shot. Mike's an excellent player, and any top player is capable of beating another top player in a short race by a lopsided count (I think a race to 11 is still a short race). It's just the nature of the game.

Corey beat Mika 11-0 in the U.S. Open final, Grady beat Buddy once 11-0, and Earl beat Nick 11-0 when Nick was number 1 in the world. I know of those matches just because they're on Accu-Stats. With the amount of pool these guys play everybody's gonna lose lopsided once in a while.

This is a great point...

At this level of play anybody is capable of winning or losing by a lopsided margin. It is sort of like when there are so called "upsets" in pro sports. People kind of lose track that all the teams in the NFL or NBA are filled with top pros and athletes and are capable of beating anybody on a given day.
