Delrin Butt Cap question

Cuemakers,

I am looking at installing old style milk white delrin butt caps on my cues moving forward but wanted to ask a few questions first:

1) Is there a source for already pre-made old school butt caps? I had seen Lee (Brianna products) offer them in the past but can't find them any more. If I don't have to re-invent the wheel, I don't see a reason to do it.

2) My understanding is that delrin isn't particularly good at holding finish. Now that information is from years and years ago and maybe the new finishes are different. If so...fantastic. If not, do you have to leave the butt cap slightly oversized in order to have a smooth transition from the butt sleeve to the butt cap?


Please let me know if I am asking for anyone to give away "trade secrets." I don't wish to impose but again, why blow through a ton of money and time trying to figure out what so many already know.

1. You want the Acetal kind.
2. They don't hold finish. Leave it about .005 oversized then polish it down when you polish the finish of the wood.

Thanks for the quick response. I am assuming that Acetal is a type of delrin resin but I may be completely wrong. The next question being, are you aware of anyone who sells / makes these butt caps who might have them for sale?

Eric,

You better plan on holding it on with a weight bolt too. Glues just won't hold it for the long haul.

Acetal is the trade name, and Delrin is a product name for the same thing. At least thats how I think it goes.

True enough - Delrin was the brand name used by DuPont, the inventor.

FWIW - certain cue geniuses can make 'em stick forever - the last two
of mine I took off old cues, I had to clamp on the Delrin with vise grips
and beat them with a hammer to break them free.

Yes, there are "methods" to secure the Delrin, but I just don't trust them 100%.

I don't use weight bolt to hold them.
I live thread them. I bore them about .710 then thread them for 3/4 threaded tenon.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I use a weight bolt, partialy because
it's what the screw that holds the bumper threads in to.

That may work for LE, or for a while - but I'm with Royce on this one.

It works forever. Unless you break the epoxy on those threads and one vertical channel. There is no way that delrin spins.
