Please give your idea of what rating system for 14.1 should be. Does this look about right?

Capable of running
*******************
1-7 balls=D Player

8 balls-1 rack+6 balls balls=C Player

21 balls-3 racks=B Player

3-6 racks=A Player

7-10 racks= Pro Player

More than 10 racks=14.1 Champion

I think a A player is capable of running 3-7 racks often and a pro can run 7+ racks almost on a daily basis...

But, i have run 10 racks once and dont consider myself as a champion or a pro player but i would say A..

I think you have to go by averages. you cant just base it on one run.

i would say you are pretty close though. i would add 2 racks to B and Above.

based on my runs, i dont believe i fall into the pro catagory, heck i dont even think i fall into the A catagory either !!!!

everyone is entitled to a good day or 2

I think this is an interesting post. I can't believe some guys I play who tell me they have no idea what their highest run is. What, not even in league play? You never count? Come on!

How are we supposed to mark our improvements without measurements? Can you imagine a golf player not knowing his best score? HIs most birdies in a round? His hole-in-ones?

However, I'd ask the OP, what do you mean by 'capable of running'? I'm 'capable' of running forty-something in that I've done it maybe 3 or 4 times. But is that enought to put me in the same category as someone who EXPECTS to run 40-odd every time he plays? (Well, obviously not...)

But I'd say that, from my experience of what guys at Amsterdam run in the straight pool league, you have it about right.

Your rating system would place me at the bottom rung of the A players.

Well, I am indeed in the second tier at Amsterdam, the one just below the tier that has the pros (this season including Barouty, Lipsky, Robles, Zvi, Lynch). There are seven of us and I'm the lowest ranked player in the second tier.

So as I say, that would suggest you have it about right. Although I'd say there's a lot of difference between me and the better A players, so maybe you'd need a bit more subtlety.

Anyone who can run 84 and call themself a hack is indulging in a little false modesty if you ask me. You can run 84 and you're a STRONG player.

I think the whole rating thing is subjective. I mean take for example the "C" player. In my mind, a "C" player is "your average player". In all my years playing pool and owning a poolroom, seeing hundreds, perhaps thousands of pool players, a "C" player is lucky to run 8 balls in a wide open rack. That, to me is your average pool player.

Better than average is ( at least in my mind) a "B" player. A "B" player, being someone who can run through a full rack of balls and 40 percent of the time get on a break shot and get into the next rack.

Now that has to be better than average.

I think an "A" player is someone who can (with regularity) get through 2 or 3 racks.

Then ( again IMO) the rating goes on to AA AAA and Pro.

The point is I'm basing the lettering off of what an average pool player actually is, and the average pool player is not running multiple racks or even one full rack consistently.

In fact if we really did a scientific study, I'd be willing to bet that the overwhelming "average player" may fall more closely into the "D" player category.

For as many years as I've loved this game of ours, I can recall at least a half dozen times we've been to parties or social events where the home owner has a pool table in their house. The conversation comes up that they are always playing and love the game. A few other guests agree that they also love to play and when we all finally converge in the basement around the table, I'd be comfortable giving them 3 to 1 on the money my wife would kick their ass, and I'd be stealing if I played them one handed. (and I suck one handed.) :) So, IMO there is your average player.

I see what you guys mean. It's very hard to say this guy is an "A" and this guy is a "B" player.

Years ago I've run a few 80's on a big table, but my high run in 20 innings was probably only 35-45 balls. I considered myself a "B" player back then (20+ years.

Two years ago I stated playing again every day on a BB. I have run ONE 96 and since (about a year) I have not run over 65. I feel I'm an "A" player on a BB in 9-ball and 10-ball.

The few times I went to play on a 9' I ran two in the 30's out of about 20 innings. Johnnyt

This thread just makes me realize how much I really suck at 14.1.

Although, the rankings do not too far from what they should be, other than "capable of" should be changed to AVERAGES. Just my low end .02

I forgot about avg. balls per inning. That is the way to go I guess. Now if someone would like to put rankings on that, be my guest. Johnnyt
