Any ideas on making this broken cue better?

Hi Guys,

I had this broken cue and was going to give it to a professional like Proficient Billiard to repair but I didn't like their idea of adding a piece of phenolic to joint the two broken pieces initially. Now, thinking back, I think that would have been the way to go but I thought I would try to fix it myself first.

Here's how it looked before:

I've basically refaced the two broken piece and joint them with a solid maple dowel. My ideas was to try and align the point as well as I could and then have the cue refinish and possibly add inlays at the join to make the cue more atheistically pleasing to the eye. Well, the cue look good but unfortunately now their a buzz type sound when I hit the cue on the side to test the vibration. When you screw the shaft to the cue, it plays normal and you don't hear the buzz and the cue is still dead straight as before.

I've talked to Jerry and he tell me it's a lost cause...so I decided to have another cue built from scratch from him and am now thinking of converting this to a fancy JumpBreak cue.

Anyway, another have any ideas to make this cue better? Should it just be converted to a jumpbreak, the cue plays dead solid and break really good as well.

Yes please! My initial thought was "Someone has anger management issues that need to be corrected before they're allowed to have another cue - especially a cue that looks that good!"

But the location and clean break don't seem to jibe with a cue over the knee anger outburst.

So what DID happen?

What I think I would have done is place a thin black ring where you rejoined it and inlaid a little sideways inlay over the points there to give the look of those black ends being like swords. That would give a little cleaner final look. But what you did looks pretty good.

this is why i always recommend carrying a cheap cue for a "break stick".

You may not want to hear this but, since you've done the repair and you have a buzz, the remedy at this point is to replace the forearm.
It can be done by the orig. builder, in which case he may be able to duplicate it or you could install a forearm with the wood of your choice.
BEM seems to be the most likely candidate but you're certainly free to let your imagination run.

The buzz may or may not have been the result of your actions.
I can easily imagine how a forearm sustaining that degree of blow could dislodge the 'A' jnt in the process of snapping the forearm.
In which case, it will never be right until the forearm is replaced.
It could also be that 1 or 2 of the inlays have loosened and are now buzzing.

This cue has the potential to be returned to it's true value.
Convert it to a J/B and you'll have lost that chance.
But on the other hand, it's your cue, you've spoken to the builder and at this point I'd say do what you like.

I broke a cue similar to that once. I missed a shot and hit it on a padded bar stool. My intentions were not to break the cue but I sure as heck did. It was only a few weeks old to and the most expensive cue I had bought up untill that point. It was a bad night all round. Someone came up to me after I broke it and made a smartass coment and sure nuff almost got into a stupid fight. I learned from that one instance and have never fixed that cue. Its a friendly little reminder of how to act in life and and at the pool table. This is still my favorite predator model to date. I really want to replace the forearm but at the same time I like the reminder. Nice try on the fix Duc.

Why didn't you contact me Duc? I have techniques to repair breaks like that that are barely noticeable. Most times, if I am not happy with the results, I don't charge for them. In this case, I could have tried and if not successful, I could have redone it the way you repaired it.

This is still my favorite predator model to date. I really want to replace the forearm but at the same time I like the reminder.

I can fix that. Maybe we can work something out for some veneers.

If you want, I will be happy to sent the cue to you to see what you can come up with. I was thinking of a using a ring like Chris mentioned that would simulate an inlays on the six point which will help conceal the joint. I was told that it may be better to use a pin to joint them instead of the dowel as it would have been stronger.

With regards to the damage on the cue...just don't get your wife angry or this will happen to your cue!! LOL!! My advice...keep your pricey cue hidden from your spouse.

A pin sounds stronger and maybe as Cueman said, a of the black ring may be a fine finish. Hopefully didn't break one till now.

I would never use a pin. Adding metal would drastically change the balance point and the way the cue plays. The ultimate goal is to repair the cue so it can play as close to the way it played before the break.
