Update on the Des Moines pool scene

The only time handicapping becomes an issue is when you have a TD that has his horses under-rated so he can steal the tournament.

Have a "council" of neutral people to determine the handicaps and it a winner (maybe retired players that know everyone). I have also had success by polling the players at my player meetings.

I completely agree with you Ray. Handicapping is tough though, because there are plenty of BCA Masters caliber players around here that are playing in the open, and vise versa. I honestly think handicapping is too much of a hassle, but I'm just giving ideas to get more people wanting to play in the big tournaments. When you start handicapping whats to stop an unknown out-of-towner from coming in an robbing?

The bottom line is, if you want more local players, raising the entry isn't going to get you there, but I understand that if you want the big guns there has to be big pay outs involved also. Is there a happy medium...?

Athens did a tournament once or twice where you paid entry based on your skill level ... A/B/C. That was pretty cool. So you got a handicap + a cheaper entry. Guess what local players played.

How much would a D player pay? Free roll?

I'm just saying, a lot of the "better" players don't want a handicapped tournament, but every time they gamble they give up weight anyway....:scratchhead:.... So, you don't want to handicap our race to nine, but if we were gambling you'd spot me a few games? WTF? They shouldn't care about a handicapped tournament because in a race to 9 they should still win, plus it will bring in more entry fees which in turn bring in more payout.

You can shear a sheep many times, but fleece it only once!

Baaaa

I liked those tournaments too.

Matt: No D's allowed. (What was in your wallet?) :D

We did this for our Fargo City Championships

8-ball was 40,30, or 20 entry, depending on the player's Fargo Rating

Big Table 9-ball was $30, $20, or $10 to enter

An advantage of this for the Des Moines tournaments is that if an out-of-towner sneaks in, he can't really rob the tournament, he's only stealing $20 or something.

A disadvantage is the entry fees of the "also played" crowd is an important part of the payout pot.

I personally think the $60 entry fee would be steep for a B player with no real chance if it was a monthly tournament. But for a 4-times-a-year tournament, I think the B players should just suck it up and pay and play. If they did this in large numbers so that these tournaments had 100+ rather than 60 players, then think of the consequence.

Basically all the extra players are locals, so each person is much more likely draw a path to the cash that avoids champions. In other words, if the tournament pump gets primed, then the top players become a smaller percentage of the field.

After thinking a bit i believe i am wrong. I think it was just a cheaper entry based on your rating. No handicap involved.

Either way it worked and people played.

We should play for the $44. Spot me? One of us could get in the tournament then and buy a pepsi.

ME

Kidding - we'll cut you up at league next time.

Lol, whats the deal with everyone trying to rob me?! First Rookie in bank pool (heard Fernando and Tracy want to bet against me or back him....one or the other), now you...who is next? Maybe I should just stick to my bread and butters Mario Kart for the SNES, Ms Pac Man, Silver Strike, and Killer Instinct I and II.

If I'm free, I will play regardless. Hell, I'm dead money, and I was one round out of the money in the last one. Regardless of the money, I had a blast!!!....other than Richardson making a bunch of bad bets for me.....:duck:

So B players go to 7, A's to 9, AA's to 11 and Pro Level to 13.

See how that turns out...I am pretty sure I already know that answer.

You need a little luck to get through in those tournaments anyway. I mean Whitey and Gary were in the finals, yeah they play good but they were top 10 players in that field. Don't even look at the one pocket and the way that went.

Just be there for the draw and keep hitting the button to randomize until you like it.

On the big table it's a good game! I'd still bet on you but its not stealing. On the bar table I think you know too much for him to fade that. FWIW a lot of people say they will when they know they wont so dont let that bother you chico.

Thanks...starting this Friday I have 10 days off in a row. Maybe we can set something up then. Jason, you need to do another $20 poker tournament...we haven't had a hang out gig in awhile.

Yeah those races are no good.

3, 5, 7, 9 much better ! ! ! !

FOR 9-BALL????? Like I said everyone wants something for nothing.

With the races I put I have watched Archer never make it to the finals in Great Southern Billiard Tour Events. There are a ton of different winners. A 5-3 race would be really fun for peoples $60-$75 entry fee :(

If you don't think you can win 7 games or win at your skill level to an extent then you should not even play. If you tell yourself you will lose before you ever hit a ball your beat before the flip. No shame in failing but theres a lot to be said about people who are scared to try.

No one has a sense of humor today. Must be the holiday stress. I expected some kind of locksmith remarks..............sigh.

On a serious note. I am not playing 9 ball anything anymore. Everyone can stick that shitty sloppy game up their asses.

PS: With my races their would be a different winner every single time ! :D
