Dream or Nightmare: Your Next Match Has Just Been Called for the Accu-Stats Table

I played my one and only match on a stream table very early in a tournament, played above my ability and beat a much higher ranked player.

Best part of it, there was only 1 viewer at the time I was told so no evidence! Cha-Ching!

lol. The best of both worlds.

Lou,
I think a nightmare and a dream are the same thing. For me it was parts of both. I had to play on the TV table at DCC back when BCN was still streaming from there. I was partners with Efren against Jeanette Lee and "mthornto" in the AZB raffle match. The seats were FULL (or seemed that way, doesn't really matter).

I was fairly novice at the time; but played great (for me) with Efren as a partner - we ran out every time we got to the table, won all the games, and never missed a ball (8 Ball match) - despite fierce sharking from Jeanette.

Very nerve wracking, but its always a great opportunity to test yourself...isn't that the point of pool. I had friends from Korea, Japan, and Finland call to point out how nervous I looked.

Here is my "Efren story" from that match. We were playing alternate shot, and when it was my first turn, I asked Efren on which side of the next ball he wanted the cue ball to be. He replied so the audience could hear, "it doesn't matter." I thought he might be joking, or didn't really understand my English, so I asked again if he wanted the cue ball nearer the rail than the next object ball (it was a ball he would have to shoot down the rail), even with the object ball, or farther from the rail than the object ball. He replied again, "it doesn't matter." The crowd went wild (I think they must have always suspected that Efren was fairly handy no matter his position).

My second shot was a long, tough, seven foot cut shot into those damn tough tight pockets. I made it, and let out a BIG sigh of relief (very lucky shot for me at the time). Efren asked with a puzzled expression, "what's wrong." I said, "I'm a beginner, and a straight pool player, I need to be closer to the ball to have any hope of making it." The rest of the match (3 or 4 more games), I was NEVER more than a foot away from an object ball. I think Efren can put whitey just about where he wants it. JMO.

LOL!! Fabulous story. Love it.

TV Table

I got some new Accu-Stats 1Pocket DVDs for Xmas and have been watching a few of them. One DVD in particular made me chuckle a bit. I won't name names, but one of the players, at the time, was not so well-known and he goes up against an established champion. The underdog player plays *really* well in this match. But, at one point he has a chance to steal a game, if not the match, when the champion scratches. The underdog has BIH and chooses a questionable shot and then plows it straight into the rail. I think it was just that the heat was too much for him.

Sooooo there you are. You're in a tournament. You are no world-beater. You're hoping for a soft draw to get rolling. And then you hear your name over the PA and the announcement that your next match is on the Accu-Stats table: cameras, lights, a crowd, Danny Diliberto and Freddy the Beard in the booth. Your opponent is a stone-cold champion. And, you are clearly the dog.

Dream or nightmare?

Lou Figueroa

Oh man , Lou that is a great question and an excellent scenario, We all dream of getting into that situation, but it mostlikely would be a nightmare for me, I always get the (Shakes) real bad in a tournament, unlike gambling, where I don't.

I guess if one plays enough tournament's he/she would eventually learn to control their emotions and hopefully play to their potential.

It wasn't on a tv-table, but I was playing in front of about 1000 spectators in a shopping-mall in Cebu, against Jharome Pena. There were 6 tables, but since I was 1 of only 2 foreigners in the tournament the eyes were on our match.

I lost 9-0 :D He did ran out 5 times from his break, and 3 times on my dry break, so I felt there wasn't much I could do different though!

The winner of our match was supposed to play Efren on the tv-table next. Jharome lost that match 9-1, and Efren ran out 7 times on his breaks in that match. Amazing level in that tournament on all players, except me :D

A friend of mine got a call to the tv-table on an Eurotour, and he was so nervous he told me after the match that he hoped his opponent would run out all the time. He hated being on the table, and had no confidence at all.

It's funny how that works, David. Sometimes you get the jitters and other times nothing. I played a guy a couple of days ago and was worried I'd get nervous because I was giving him a pretty big spot. But, it all was still there. Maybe, if you abuse them enough, after a while your nerves go dead :-)

Hey, Roy, what's Up? You coming to the Derby this year?

So, are you saying getting called for the Accu-Stats table would be a nightmare? Or are you more a masochist?

Not going to Derby this year, but most likely next year again. It's such a long and expensive trip for me, and I want to see more of the world than just the inside of the Horseshoe Casino when I finally have time to travel :D

Well, for me it was a nightmare because of the result when I played, and I have to admit I was very, very nervous. But as soon as the match started it was all gone, and business as usual.

I guess I will feel like that if I ever get on a tv-table. Very nervous before the match, but focused when it's on.

Depending a lot on the opponent though. I would hate playing a guy like Earl that talks and interacts with you, but a humble, quiet player like Efren, Ralf, Archer or Brumback would be just fun.

Or, I wouldn't like playing Archer or Ralf if they were in the slow-playing-mood, then I would get lots of time to get nervous between shots :D

Actually I think I would prefer to play one-pocket on my debut on a tv-table, that way I would get to shoot a lot more often and get time to know the conditions.

lol, I can't believe, with the Euro at 1.31, traveling here would be a problem, but I guess do understand.

And believe me: playing a quiet player like Brumback is no pic-a-ni-ka :-)

This scenario reminds me of something that happened to me nearly 20 years ago. It was at the US Open One Pocket Tournament in Kalamazoo Michigan. I took Gary up to play and set up my cue repair booth to do repairs during the tourney. I decided to "donate" by getting in to the tournament as well, just to support the tour and gain a little experience. I hadn't played much one pocket at that point and knew I really wasn't going anywhere in the tournament. This was when Accu-Stats was set up at the tournament and I drew Grady the first round. Grady was still a force to be reckoned with playing one pocket, in fact he was a legend. The night before the tournament Gary and I were in the room and I asked him "What do you think I should do?" He said "you might as well bend over and kiss your ass goodbye, you have no chance with Grady". I said "Damn, what if Accu-Stats decides to put us on the TV table. I really don't want to just make a fool out of myself, maybe I should just forfeit!" Gary said, "No, don't do that, just get up there and do your best and maybe you'll get a few rolls and learn something in the process. " That's when I decided that if we were on the TV table I was going to do the same thing Corey Duell did years later when he knew he was out manned in the moving department and break the balls wide open hoping to make a ball in my pocket and run some balls. As it turned out, Pat Fleming made a wise decision and chose another match for the TV table and I just played the match normally and didn't win a game. lol After the match I told Grady what I'd thought about doing and he just laughed his ass off. He said I'm glad the situation didn't come up, I don't know how I would have acted if you'd done that!

Well, I'm getting my salary in Norwegian Kroner, not Euro, and the NOK vs USD have been about the same for almost 1 year.

It sure is cheap to go to America for me instead of other countries, but like I said, I want to see more of your country than just inside Horseshoe, so I'm thinking of other events and cities.

You played Brumback on a tv-table? Tell me more :)

I've played against Efren in front of lots of people gambling in Manila, and played tournament matches against top players such as Ralf Souquet, Alex Lely, Jeanette Lee, Oscar Dominguez and John Brumback. All a pleasure to play against! They were all nice, and it was fun to play them.

Maybe it wouldn't have been just as fun on the tv-table though, but hope I will get that experience too one day ;)

lol, great story, Sherm!

LF,
Are you being serious? Fatboy participated in one of those DCC ring games with a bunch of champions. There must be a DVD somewhere with commentary and everything.

hmmmm, well, my memory is very thin on this particular event, BUT I thought FB bemoaned not playing so well during that one...

No, I played John two tournaments in a row -- like the US Open and the DCC, or two DCCs in a row, if I remember correctly, but not on the TV table. Both times I thought I was hanging and then he'd whip in a bank out of nowhere. Hated it. I've been lucky enough to play a number of champions. Next time at the DCC I'll buy you a beer and we can swap tales.

Lou Figueroa

Lou,

My first time at DCC Scott Smith asks me if I mind playing on the TV table. Agreed quickly. Had to play I believe Bobby Thompson???. Was a very highly regarded player at one time. First time under the lights. Table really fast. No humidity in the cloth. Also the first time with the "measles" cue ball. Only remember the match because with the score somewhere around 6 - 2, I walked over to my opponent and wanted to shake hands. He suggested I should win the seventh game first. Don't think there was any commentary going on. Actually I prayed there was no one in the booth. I was so embarrassed. Like to play before a crowd regardless. The streaming was a bonus!

Your memory serves you correctly Lou.. I was there and it was not very pretty but I am not dogging Fatboy.. At least he threw his hat in the ring and gave it a try.. Nothing to be ashamed of in my opinion..

I watched the DCC bank ring game last year and if I remember correctly, 2 of the players did not make a bank shot but they put their money in too.. I believe one of them was Harry Platis.. At least they tried!

For me it depends on the game. I know this is going to be controversial but I really think some games are harder on the psyche than others. Personally, I can have my confidence shattered playing nine-ball much easier than playing one-pocket or even straight pool. I guess my confidence doesn't go down the drain when I miss some of those banks in one-pocket. Plus half the time you are exchanging safeties. But in nine-ball every shot can be put under the microscope and there's nothing worse than hooking yourself with ball-in-hand. Correction - missing with ball-in-hand is worse. Unfortunately, I've done both :(

So at this point it would be a nightmare for me playing nine-ball, but I think I could get through a one-pocket match. Of course I wouldn't win but I could get through it.

For me it would be a dream regardless of whether I won or dogged it. It won't happen because I'll never play in a tournament that big.

It would be super cool though.

For me, I would enjoy the opportunity to test myself under the TV lights and can only dream of playing well. What happens under the lights will only make me stronger. If I fail, I fail but it won't be for lack of effort.

I have lost MANY matches to great players as well as lesser players and losing another would not be a nightmare. Getting the opportunity to play on the TV table is the dream and the chips will fall where they will. Hopefully, I will have good control over my emotions and I will be able to focus.

Once upon a time, I was on the TV table, playing Davey Crockett, a descendant of the original famous frontiersman. Ok, he wasn't Efren but David played well and we were see-sawing game for game but with him leading most of the time. About half way through our match Scott Smith informed us that we had been demoted and were sent to the minor leagues to finish our match. He had a bank game semi-final or some other "important" match to be filmed on the TV table and we were banished in the middle of our match. It can't get any worse than that so bring on the lights, Freddy, Billy, Grady and my worst critics. I've already been beaten, embarassed and ostracized so that doesn't leave much worse to be had. Yeah, I lost that match too but it doesn't keep me from trying. lol
