smoking in a pool hall?

I'm sure there are others who feel that smoking doesn't have to be a part of playing pool, so feel free to chime in please! I went to the pool room last night for some photos and stayed about 1 1/2 hours. I haven't played in over 5 months so it was kind of nerve-racking the whole time, needless to say my fiance' asked me to shower right after I got home! I was going to anyways cause' I REALLY stunk!! I couldn't believe how bad it smelled after I'd been away for a while. It made me realize just how nice it is not going through that on a nightly basis anymore! Weren't they supposed to have to stop allowing it? Are there any legit places that don't allow it to be? It was like everyone in there was chain-smoking! lol I was going to stay for a while cause' a well known, very strong player was supposed to be coming but I could stand it no longer. Seeing him play would have made for some awesome photos for my 'sports portfolio', but I'll do without if I'm going to have to endure that to get them. YUK!

any thoughts?

I can handle bad music as long as I can breathe!! It wasn't this bad long ago, what happened? There are even high ceilings in this place I speak of, I can't believe he has no better ventilation! I could frequent there again if it wasn't this bad! OMG!!
 
I'm sure loud music and drinking doesn't have to be part of pool either. I remember when smoking was ok in a pool room but loud music was forbidden. Most of the pool rooms like most of the bars in my area our losing 40% to 50% of their business due to smoking ban. All the non smokers who pushed for no smoking stop showing up after the law was passed. Like you said you weren't their for 5 months so you are no room supporter!

Oh no, my having kids had absolutely nothing to do with my decision to take a break :rolleyes: My kids come 1st before ANY 'hobby' paying or not! I have an 18 month old and a 5 month old, so NO, pool isn't among my priorities at the moment. It won't be either until something is done about that crap. I used to spend countless hours in that place, so my taking 5 measly months off is nothing. Thanks for your comment though :grin:

p.s. You don't know me or what I'm about so your negative comment about me not being a 'supporter' has no bearing. Thanks anyways
 
Agreed!! By the end of the night you smell bad and your eyes burn. Any jacket you bring in stinks for days. Fortunately, here in Illinois a smoking ban went into effect so pool is much more enjoyable now.
 
The smoking ban in Maine has been in effect for 7 or 8 years, and there are more places to go out to now than ever before. There are probably three times as many restaurants in our city now than in the years before the ban, and it ain't because we have a booming economy here. They're always packed on the weekends, and busy much of the time. The bars are usually busy as well. The places to play pool, it varies, but there are as many places to play now as there was then.

Don't buy into the "40-50% drop-off in business" arguments. Maybe there is a small drop-off in the weeks immediately following a ban going into effect, but people are social creatures. Bars won't ever become less popular as long as there is still booze, and people to drink it.

Hard to believe that. I'm a card-carrying smoker & I hit the pool room no less often than I used to. You go, you play, and every hour or so, when the nicotine calls, you go outside and have a smoke. Wash, rinse, repeat.
 
What about in DCC,are they going to ban smoking there too..i was there couple years ago and i could not stand the smell inside the room.i was watching Efren playing some one pocket and Busty played SVB but i have to leave early because i could not stand it.So i agree that smoking should be ban in any pool hall.
 
the bar where I play league is a smoking bar. even the linen wrap on my cues stinks.

Brickyard Billiards (indy) is only 20 minutes from my home and there is no smoking in there. Ima trying to get my team mates to move locations as the extra 15 minutes of drive time is worth it.

the bad/loud music I can tune out.
 
I worked in jersey a few yrs ago , it was no smoking in bars and pool halls. it was great coming home not wreaking of smoke, and the people that did smoke went outside when the urge hit them ( winter time too ) to light up. places were packed, smokers adapted, non smokers were happy, win win for everyone!
I'm sure when a ban first takes place, there is an initial downturn in business, but after a short break in period, people adapt to change and business returns to normal. I wish florida would ban smoking in all bars and pool halls.
 
Even if a ban actually chased away some smokers, it attracts new customers. There are three times as many non smokers as there are smokers so it makes good business sense to appeal to the majority.

If a smoking ban applies everywhere and is enforced uniformly, the smokers will adapt.
 
second hand smoke is worse for you, this is why i continue to smoke.

all you haters can have my little place in heaven ready for me when i get there.

I hate when the smoke that YOU (and every smoker) generate makes me smell like an ash tray. And can cause me health issues. Because of something YOU are doing. Not because of something I am doing myself.

"Hater" is a catchy, trendy word. It just isn't accurate in this discussion.
 
So why don't you leave!By the way their is NO scientific proof that second hand smoke is deterimental. I f you want proof just look at the EPA lawsuiit in 1993 which a judge threwout due to lack of scientific evidence.Also the 2003 California study which was the most extensive study on second hand smoke concluded that second hand smoke in a ventilated room did insignificant harm to the people who did not smoke. Yes it stinks and yes its wrong to smoke but you could say that about excessive drinking and use of drugs.For all you people who think it hasn't effected business your dead wrong.But then again so has the economy.I think pool is going the way of bowling bar table leagues.Owners love league players!!

Cuz I don't have to. Smoking has been banned here for years. Still, to persue the argument, why should anyone have to go home smelling like an ashtray because of someone elses habit?

OK, if you really want to believe that, thats cool. I'm of the opinion that inhaling smoke into my lungs, no matter where it came from, is bad for me.

No question. Still, the drinking and the drugs are almost always only detrimental to the user, not to anyone else in the vicinity. (Yes, I know how bad drunk/impaired driving is and how it affects other people, but that doesn't usually happen in a pool room, the point of our discussion here.)

For all you people who think it hasn't effected business your dead wrong.

Why? Because you say so? I've been going out to clubs and bars here for a long time, and those businesses are just as busy as they have ever been. People will always want to socialize, and be around other people for entertainment. People here adapted to the smoking ban quite nicely.

But then again so has the economy.

I think pool is going the way of bowling bar table leagues.Owners love league players!!

At least league players drink something other than water. Why wouldn't the owners like them (us)?

What I don't understand is why non-smokers want to limit freedom and personal responsibility so much. Get off your high horses and telling smokers how to live. If you don't like it, open a non-smoking pool hall and go hang out there!!!

You don't have to ban everything just because YOU don't like it. I personally enjoy the smell of tobacco so :kma:

Quit whining.
