Who is the greatest American pool player of all time?

Since polls are limited to ten choices, I had to make some decisions and had to leave out some great players. Feel free to submit a write-in vote if you think the greatest American player is not on the list.

This can depend on which game of pocket billiards you are referring to. Mosconi was probably as good as they came in straight pool, but Earl would probably have cleaned his clock in 9-ball. Some of the others mentioned would have been great choices for all-around players. I cannot vote because I cannot decide on who was the overall greatest, although the Mosconi camp would have a lot of ammo to fire a salvo with!!!

Greatest American player

This is a knowledgable group. You might be surprised how well Haorld Worst does in this poll.

I never saw Mr. Worst play but I believe the others here, that he was a great player at several games.
I realize it was no fault of his that he died at a young age , but to say he was the best ever seems ridiculous to me.
In my opinion to be the best ever, you have to beat all the other great players of your era repeatedly in many venues.
Just based on the short time he was able to play, this eliminates Mr. Worst for me.
Could of, would have, should have, has absolutely no bearing on reality.
If he had lived for many years longer, he may well have been the best ever , he did not, so you cannot speculate on how many titles or championships he would have won , based on his best performances.
It doesn't work that way.
Someone who would be argueably the best ever in my opinion is not even on the list.
Something that a lot of people I doubt know, was that Willie Mosconi actually played 3 cushion billiards at a high enough level to win tournaments but he never pursued it because he knew he couldn't beat Hoppe on a regular basis.
I hope no one thinks I am being disrespectful to Mr. Worst, I am not.
Just think of all the great golfers who have burst onto the scene and dominated for a couple of years and then for whatever reason, dropped off the radar.
Tiger Woods looked like he was going to keep destroying everyone for a hundred years , all of a sudden life jumped in and he can't win.
We have no way of knowing what would have happened had he lived longer, but we do know what he did in his lifetime, and for me it is not enough to warrant the best ever title.

Wimpy all day...

I'm going to say Lassiter - for several reasons. He was arguably the greatest 9 ball player of his or any era. He was also a great one pocket and straight pool player as well. He had several titles in both (although not as good as Mosconi at straight pool).

However, the biggest reason I am going to say Wimpy is because he was the greatest money player of his era, AS WELL as a world class tournament player. Mosconi only played straight pool, and he only played tournaments. Wimpy was a champion in tournaments, and he was the THE MAN to beat for the cash for a long time...playing ALL games. Just my 2 cents

I just picked Mosconi because he was completely dominant for longer than should be possible for a human being.

If longevity was your reason, you actually mis-voted. Irving Crane won championships in 6 different decades!

my assumption is "all around" player, and I say mike sigel because when interviewed a few years back, Efren said his toughest opponent ever was sigel...so, I agree with Efren! :)

all around.........Harold Worst...........close second Ralph Greenleaf..........but the polls going to say Mosconi i already know as your not findiing out about Ralph and Worsts exploits in any books really.......that said Mosconi's record on the 8 ft can go blow me for all i care. Greenleafs 300+ on the 10' is a much greater record and thats a fact........but hey can't make everyone not lick Willies dead balls........

Depends what you mean by greatest. If you're talking about ALL-AROUND greatest, it's an incomplete list without Hopkins and Varner. Since I know either of these guys would torch most of those guys in with a 9b, 1P, rotation and 14.1 all-around --- I'm abstaining.

Speaking of Earl. Why isn't he at the DCC?
