Your horse called...

10 mins before the huge match for all the money. Your horse calls, in a panic. "I cant make a ball, lm leaving everything short! Im UNDERCUTTING everything, and the match starts in 30 seconds!!! I dont know whats wrong!?"

WHat mechanical things do you tell him to look for? Not psychological, emotional, esoteric, etc.

you tell him to stop being a puss, because there is nothing that you can fix thats going to help anyone in 30 seconds, that and you cant fix or give advice if you have not watched the person, so you have no idea what the problem is so you could give him 1000 recommended things that need to be.......then his head will just be spinning more.

sounds like your player has no solid preshot routine and his mechanics are not yet completely natural imop.

he doesn't know so neither can you so you cant recommend anything honestly.

Tell him to calm down. It's 10 minutes before match time, (you said this in the begining of your post).

Tell him to suck it up, armor up, and play like his life depends on it. Then add softly..."It just might..." and hang up.

Winner winner!

I tell him the same thing I tell anyone who is struggling or having an off night....quit trying to do too much. Go back to the basics of shotmaking. Don't try to draw or spin the CB all over the table, just get a smooth stroke, and use natural roll and speed to make the shot get position. You don't need exact position, if you are putting balls in the pockets. Play shot accurcy and zone position.

Tell him that his problem may be that the balls are stickier than he is used to and this will cause all the cut shots to come out thicker than expected. He needs to either use outside english or just play the balls to the thinner side of the pocket.

Whether the above is true or not -- balls can vary widely in how sticky they are -- it will get him to make a correction in the right direction without destroying his confidence.

Grady Mathews has commented on differing ball conditions in his exhibitions. His secret: watch where the balls are going, and if you're effectively hitting them too full, hit them thinner.
