Disgusted

No idea what you're talking about, all of those rules work great in either tournaments or gambling. They were most recently used in TAR 20, which is not really a "two man invitational tournament" :p

I can see where these anti-luck rules might hurt your odds of busting a guy if you're gambling, he's gonna pull up when he sees the lesser player has no shot.

In a tournament match the best player does not have to win regardless of the rules. In fact the short and sudden death nature of a tournament match will actually dictate how you play. You can't really free wheel throwing away games getting loose as you hit a gear. It is not uncommon in a gambling match to lose a first set like 9 to 2 and not lose another set the rest of the match. In a tournament would be out and have to shake hands. When you are matching up the two of you can play by what ever rules you both agree to.

My point is, you can't run around looking to play pool and tell everybody they have to play by your rules or you won't play. Heck, I played in places in the south where the rules seemed to change every game. The OP's problem was he hated the luck the guy had and my opinion is, "Who cares". If you feel you have the best of it, play. You can't always have everything your way. Debating what rules can be interesting and everyone has an opinion but responding directly to the situation the OP was in and the way he reacted is what prompted my comments.

I would never belittle someone who won regardless how it happened, excluding cheating, they deserve to enjoy their victory. Not to mention, little do they know their joy will be short lived. I will continue to play till they are sick of seeing me come into the room. It is just a matter of different philosophies, and their is a difference between a tournament match and gambling as far as how the players relate to each other. A gambling match, especially if it is someone you play on a regular basis, is more personal as opposed to a tournament where the guy is usually just the other player in the game who you may have never even met before.

I'm getting so fed up with luck or roles coming into play within the course of a match.
Played this Guy yesterday a race to 9. In that race he snapped 2 nine balls, had 3 nine ball combinations, shit 2 balls in non intended pockets and got out. That's 7 unanswered games. What snapped me was his comment " I'd rather be lucky than good ". My response was " I'd rather have someone respect my game " in which he took offence to.
So I lose 9-7.
Now he's all happy cause he beat me and wants to play again. I said fine but we modify the game and see if you can win without luck.
Play call shot of your next ball in rotation, meaning always calling 1 ahead of what your shooting whether its calling the pocket or playing safe and see how good you are without luck. If you don't accomplish what u called its ball in hand.
Needless to say he left.
I'm sure others are as fed up as me.

your bankroll has to be big enough to fade rolls like that. if you really believe that you've got the best of it just stick with the game. you'll come out ahead in thelong run. or you'll find out you were wrong and he plays better than you thought

Why would you even play someone like that. It seems to me, that he's nothing but
a banger. I don't play people like that. Play people your speed or better.

Since you asked, cash is good reason to play those below your speed and avoid players better than you.

There was no money involved other than table time, I just decided to play him at his game as a measuring stick of my own game and to see if I could outrun his luck. Otherwise, he is definitely below my speed, and if he were to play a "normal" game where he couldn't rely on slop, safeties by luck, and had to emphasize cue ball control, I would rob him. Problem is, he won't play that way. Slamming into the balls and getting lucky is his game.

I get there will be times you can't say "My way or the highway"... if nobody wants grady-type rules then I guess you take what you can get. Either way it's .. unmanly to cry about luck in 9 ball. It's like getting mad when your stuffed animal gets dropped by the claw game at Denny's. What did you expect to happen?!

I don't know if this was directed at me, but I never once cried about it. I just came across this thread and realized that I played a guy just like that. Like I said, I knew what I was getting into when I played him and agreed to his game as a test to myself to see if I could outrun his luck.

And I simply stated that I've never seen anyone like him. There's no possible way he can know where every ball is going to end up hitting them the way he does. I wasn't kidding when I said about 90% of the time he comes out smelling like a rose. And he must be aware of his own luck because of the simple fact that he will only play under conditions where luck is a factor. That's not a complaint, just telling it like it is.
