Found a 90's or earlier Mcdermott at a pawn shop. Beautiful cue, but in bad shape. The shaft is wrapped, the butt is cracked its been beat up, but the forearm looks great, beautiful birdseye maple, true cut points with veneers. Inlays. Would be a very nice cue! Oh and it has a cork wrap? At first I though the original got removed, and the cork was underneath it, but I found out from they're website, the used to offer it as an option? Whats something like this going to cost to fix up? And as for initial investment, what's a max?
 
McDermott restoration

I have had Scott Scherbine of Proficient Billiards do a few cues for me. He is a magician. Go to www.proficientbilliards.com
He has a gallery of his work and price list. There are many good folks out there, but Scot has always done A+ work for me and at a reasonable price.
 
McDermott was running a deal for around $250 with a new shaft. That would be the first place to check. If you can all ways send the cue back to the builder for repaire work.

So I'm guessing close to about $350-$400, for mcdermott to do the work. + costs of initial investment, I just lost any equity in it. (risking it MIGHT be worth $500-$600). I think id be in the whole. :( hmmmmm...

What model is it?

And I'm of the opinion that McDermott's refinishing rates are high. You can do better elsewhere.

Considering it's a McDemmott, the only way that I would do it is if I wanted to keep the cue. In other words, it's not a collectible... just a production cue.

The odds on you finding a buyer and making a profit are slim, imo.

I have sent an old stick (C Series) back to them before. It came back looking brand new. Hell of a job!!

They rewrap, refinish the stick, AND make you a brand new shaft for 250.00 And the new shaft is guaranteed for life against warpage.

That's hard to beat.
 
I'm pretty sure its a c series also, but there are no model markings on it... White butt cap, old style bumper. I hope to post pictures this weekend...

Did you find it at that link I included above?

You should be able to match it to a model number.

I went through almost all those pictures they have listed, and can't find the exact one. But I went through a second time, and would be better saying its between D or C series, simply judging by what those cues look like.

I've had a D21 for 25+ years - like Rick said - every few years I send my cue to them and it comes back looking BRAND NEW. I was given this cue to test hit with it over 25 years ago, and I am still shooting with it. I paid nothing for the cue - and I believe I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the minimal investment of $250 plus shipping costs to get it refurbished every 5-7 years.

I'm with lumberjack on this one. Proficient for sure!!!! Scott just re-finished my six windows Schon. Showed it to a couple of cue addicts at SBE. They were blown away by the workmanship. Give them a try.

I sent my second D-19 to Mcdermott after seeing what they did to the first one. New shaft, refinish, new leather wrap (lizard) and the orig. shaft looks new too. A $235 special. Which I think is fair concidering a new shaft alone goes for 125-150 these days. I might add that the new shaft fits as prefect as the orig. and the ring work matches with the orig.... But I also have used a few guys on AZ forums to do refinishing on other cues and their work is second to none. Jim Lee and Steve Klapp both do great work....JMO
 
Found it, went back and had a better look at it.

It's a level 4 C-14, (1980)! Beautiful.

Costs on restoration?

MCDERMOTT will do it for about $250 w/ new shaft (which it needs) the original is crap

C14 C-14 1980 1984 $220 $1,020 364%

This is straight from McDermott..says it's gone up 364%. Original cost was 220.00 produced from 80-84. Says value now is at 1120.00

They are usually way out of line on estimated value...

They won't replace butt caps, joints for that price (250)

That is the same stick I sent in years ago...C-14. It grew legs in the old Golden 8 Ball poolroom in Phx Az. Someone stole it.

That cork wrap is nice, but a PIA to keep clean. Toothpaste with a tooothbrush works on the cork nicel
