deciding which cue to use

Stupid question but I figured wth ill ask anyway. I have 3 cues that all play great and I was curious as to how most of you guys with multiple cues decide which one to play. Aside from looks.

What is it that on this given day ill play this cue. What do you look for? 1 of my cues is rather light predator 314-2 shaft and the other 2 are different makers but similar specs and play very close to each other.

I play great with both. Can't decide which to play or when to play one over the other. Just curious if there were things I could look for that might help decide which one I may play better with on that given day.

Or is it simple ill play this cue today because I like the look and haven't played it in a while.

Probably just me over thinking the situation but id like to hear from you guys with multiple high end cues. I'm still new in the custom spectum and having a time really deciding which one to play.
Thanks,
Rob

In my experience, even if I play well with multiple cues, there's always been one that feels the best. If you really play equal with these cues, I'd pick the one that won't give you a coronary if something happens to it.

I'm saying 'ditto' to that. I have several cues and have always said that I can play just as good with a well-kept house cue as I can anything else, but I only have one true daily player and I see that relationship lasting a long time.

^^^^ Exactly what they said.
I have three custom cues that can be seen in my avatar. They are all made by the same person. I had the plain kingwood cue made to my specs so it wasn't a flashy cue at risk of being stolen when I take it out. Since it got most of the play I almost never use the other ones at all. I'm sending my playing cue in for a refinish soon so I have started using one of the other ones to get used to how it plays while I am without my baby. They all hit nearly identical to one another but deflection in the shafts is a bit different.

I'm one of those that switches back and forth between cues. I am currently playing with two Bob Frey cues (one has a Z2 shaft and the other has a Timeless Timber shaft) and my brand new Dave Jones custom cue (with has standard maple shafts). The only common element is each has a 30" shaft.

On top of that I am having a (30") Timeless Timber shaft made for my original Dave Jones custom cue... so I anticipate shooting interchangeably with all four cues when I take receipt of the new shaft.

I just like playing with a cue that feels just a bit different than the last cue that I played with. Not sure why... but I do.

I typically shoot several games with one cue and then switch to another cue on a whim.

I guess that I just like variety.

And... being proficient with several playing cues can't be a bad thing, imo.

That all makes sences. Thanks for the responses. I think I will just keep them all and play them interchangablly. So as to get comfy with a variety.

Thanks,
Rob

Depends on which one has the best tip on it...

Seriously, there isn't a whole lot of difference in feel between the cues I own. I tend to prefer the one with the linen wrap when it's humid, otherwise they are in rotation. I might play one for months at a time and then on a whim switch it up. They all see play time. It's all good.

For me, if it matters, I play with a cue until I get raked over the coals. Then I switch to one of my other cues- kind of like a fresh start. Sometimes it helps with the mental crap I start to get into after a bad streak.

I agree with that statement. I find I play a little better with a different cue after I get beat like a redheaded step child.

That's kinda the way I am. I'll play with one until I have a bad night with it. Lose a match. Lose a gambling session. I will then blame it completely on the cue, and switch to one of the other cues that I own...:)

If they all feel the same go with the fanciest best looking most baller one:)

Cues are meant to be played with.

Choices

Ok Had to drag the keyboard closer for this one.

if I understand your post corectly you are playing with predator shafts on all your cues. If this is true the only real differance the butt is going to make besides looks is weight.

If you have a diffrent pred shaft for each cue then the choice is witch one of those predators do you like the best?

Me personally I shoot with an old predator with a 5/16x14 pin. I have the original shaft along with two other regular maple shafts I keep in the case. I switch shafts depending mainly on what type of table/ equipment I am playing on. Slow old valley with a mud ball I use the predator shaft because my stroke isn't as good as it used to be for getting that heavy cue ball moving the way I want it.

if the table has good cloth a red circle I tend to lean more to one of the other shafts.

favorite player

Hi all,

I have a number of Cues (about 30) that I all play once in a while, but only two favorite players. As soon as it gets serious i'll pick that one. In practice or recreation sessions I randomly take one of the others.

One thing I've noticed is, when ever I play with a randomly choosen stick, I play much more concious, I stick to the basics and shoot the balls on hand, leaving out the fancy stuff. I simply play the easier and more solid way..

Back in League or tournament I pick one of my fav. players and keep the solidity of the sessions before... Guess what happens

I have 3 custom cues. One is expensive and sort of flashy so it gets played the least out in public (I don't want to seem like i'm showing off using an expensive cue around people playing with low end cues). The second is not too fancy, but it's not cheap either and I use it some times when I want to switch from my main playing cue. It has a leather wrap and I like the feel of it when I want a change from my wrapless main player. The third cue is the cheapest of the three and I use it 90% of the time. It's a wrapless cue that looks nice and it doesn't attract a lot of attention at least not as much as the other two cues. I like to play with it especially when i'm playing someone I don't know well.

Asking myself this same question.

I have about 13. I have 3 main players. My league player had been my low deflection cue (universal smart cue). I want an extra edge if needed. But I usually take 4 cues (main player, back-up main player, break cue, and an inexpensive loaner cue) with me to league, vrs 2 most other times I play (main player/break).

My only constant cue has become my jump/break. It just comes in handy if you need it. I pick my main player by how it feels (tip condition/shaft condition) is it tuned up? Is it smooth?

Then I play a few practice racks. If all is well sweet, I play start to finish my matches.
If it isn't working for me, I make the switch to my back up, and look for any difference.

Mostly, I think I'm just stuck in my head, but if it changes things for better, then hey I go with what works!
