Roberto Gomez finishes 2nd. AGAIN

I think this is the guy who was shooting at the final ball and rushed his shot and missed it in a tournament a year or two ago.

Don't worry, Superman will get his big win eventually. He plays great enough, he just needs a roll or two.

In Vegas last year against Mika??? :)

2011 Beijing 9ball open.

This guy always goes deep into a tournament but never wins.

Are trying to make fun of Roberto Gomez?Well shame on you coz you're a pinoy too!At least he tried his best and im glad he made it to the finals...what have you contirbuted to pool industry in the Philippines?

Super-Gomez!!!

Congrats to Roberto "Superman" Gomez for placing second at the recent Beijing Open! Getting up there was not an easy task, by all means. You have to face and play all those champions where the word "miss" was not in their pool vocabulary.

He proved his mettle when he beat Wu convincingly. At that time, Wu was tearing a path of destruction and was a hands on favorite to win, that is, until he ran up against Superman Gomez.. At the very least Superman is getting "seasoned".. And believe you me, this guy will be a force to reckon with if and when he gets seasoned!!

We backed him a couple of times in QMaster and considering the weight that he was giving the other players, he still played solid and we made
some money. He had a couple of debatable decisions on shots and shapes but he was the first one to mention it and promised it won't happen again.

He is young, he is hungry, and he's got his eye on the cheese.. And he will get the cheese maybe a lot sooner than we expect!

In my book, he is already there.. That last game could have gone either way and he could have came out the champion, but sometimes, like what Efren says, "I got lucky!" bears a grain of truth in it.

His already give his best shots...there are so many great player in beijing 2011...

Yang, Efren, Wu, Chao Fong Phang, Bustamante, Souqet, Orcollo, Lee Van, Archer, and many ..

He is already got his luck to gain a second place.

Just ask many Pro Player..Who are their favourite player that their predict will fight in the final. I believe there are no name Gomez.

ROBERTO GOMEZ is a WINNER!

Besides what Bayawak, you and others said about Roberto Gomez, he has the people's skills to interact with people from all over the world. He is and will continue to make a "SUPER" AMBASSADOR of our sport for the Philippines. In America, despite English being a second language for him, his willingness to do interviews, pool commentary and interaction with the fans is second to none.

Yeap he is the bomb , would like to see some pros match up cash with him, on a streamed race to 100.

Thanks,
Nice find.
Did you notice that he used a 1/2 tip offset to the right of the center of the CB and pivoted back to the center of the CB and fired.....then missed.:(

LAMas:

I'm not sure I agree with this. While I'm not dismissing whatever kind of aiming system that Roberto uses, if you watch Roberto's body motions (and not the tip of his cue, which most aiming system advocates' eyes seem welded to), you'll see that Roberto's body moved, and he "chicken-winged" the shot -- not only dropped his shoulder, but dropped and steered as well. I think the camera angled was a bit deceiving, for I believe he was cueing center ball (i.e. the camera was off-angle to the shot as Roberto was viewing it), but "pooched it" badly via the severe breakdown in his fundamentals. It might be a case of dismissing the difficulty of the shot, or "moneyball-itis" (we all suffer this on occasion, including pros -- especially when it's the match-ending/-winning moneyball, hill-hill no less).

Anyway, it's a shame this happened -- he *had* Mika, but let it go.

Sean,
You are correct and I was being a bit sarcastic, but the visuals apeared that he was using CTE of sorts.

I watched the entire match and Roberto has a swift pre shot routine (PSR), but on this shot he broke that routine and took a little more time and animation.:(

On a second viewing, it looked like he wanted to cut the shot with inside english but swerved to the center of the CB - shoulder drop?

Yeah..I was thinking that also. He is an outgoing person and fun to talk to. I met him 2 years ago at One Side and I am glad he is doing well for himself in the pool world.

With the PSR being part of "fundamentals" (the standard definition, anyway), that's what I was thinking as well -- Roberto "did differently that which he does without thinking" -- meaning, he violated his standard PSR, took his time instead of going with the machine-like effortless PSR he's known for, and "analyzed his way" to a miss. When you take a fast shooter, and force him to look at what he's doing instead of just "going with it," all kinds of thoughts creep in (including doubts). And as you probably noticed, he "shoveled" the shot ("chicken-winged" it as I mentioned previously). Instead of authoritatively stroking the shot like he'd normally do, his analytical mind was probably constantly engaged, "monitoring" the whole stroke from start to finish. As soon as the analytical mind "sensed" something it didn't like in the movement, the steering came into play. That's probably why there was a slight difference in cue tip to cue ball contact, than what he was initially aiming for.

It all happens quickly, but if you stop-motion it in key stages, you can see it. That shoulder drops down and slightly outward, which swings the cue tip inward just a bit. In fact, I'm thinking his delivery *put* a little spin on the cue ball (for a shot that really didn't need it -- this was a center ball shot all day long), rather than delivering through center ball. You can see the cue ball's reaction off the side rail -- it had left spin, which I take it that he delivered off center to the left.

Anyway, that's my "eyeball analysis" of it. Don't really know for sure what was going through Roberto's mind or what he intended, unless someone asks him.

It very well could be that Roberto was using some type of pivot-based aiming system. But from watching Roberto, he doesn't normally show any signs of pivot -- just gets down on the ball right where he intends to hit, and just does it -- fast PSR like you noticed. Sure, it could be that he normally pivots before even getting down on the shot, but we won't know. I do know that I often see him lining up shots to the pocket CP-to-CP style.
