Metal lathe

I am looking for a mini metal lathe that does threading. I have about a $300-$400 budget. Just seeing if someone has one they would like to sell or has any good leads. Thanks

Thank you for the PMs. I have checked some more and I guess I should have been more specific. I was looking for one that would be able to do 10 tpi but have yet to find one in my price range. Thanks

Let me know if you find a one that does 10 tpi, I'd like to have one also.

Thanks,
Alan

I was hoping for that when I got my mini-lathe. In a mini, you're lucky to even be able to cut threads. Cutting 10 tpi just isn't happening. Twelve, if you're lucky.

another route

You could also look at getting a different set of gears to make the 10 a possibility. That may be more expensive than buying the bigger machine though.

I have been doing some more research and I still have a vague understanding of lathe threading but what if I were to change the lead screw. Would changing to 20 tpi help me achieve the 10 thread per inch goal with out loosing many if the other thread options?

Can of worms. If you change the screw you also need to change the half nuts. You will have way more in it than to spend the 1 k on the bigger machine.
Good luck with your search.

3/8-10 IS Possible!

Guys,

Ever since I saw this thread I've been meaning to search and find out how to set up a Mini-Lathe for 10 TPI as I remembered it could be done.

If you go here: http://www.littlemachineshop.com/Reference/change_gears.php
you will find a gear change calculator for any thread you might want. Plug in a "10" in the "Desired Thread Pitch" box and click on "Calculate". It is then a simply matter to mount an 80-tooth gear in position "A" and a 50-tooth gear in position "D" on your minilathe. The other gears don't matter. 50- and 80-tooth gears are standard issue with this lathe.

Caveat: I have not done this myself, so it is "possible" that I'm full of swarf, but LittleMachineShop.com is generally a reputable resource for information on the whole family of mini-lathes.

I believe you Gary:)...

Little Machine is an xlnt source. As is MiniLathe.com.

If it can be done on, to, or for, a MiniLathe, you can pretty much
bet it's been done and explained on MiniLathe somewhere.
