Greatest of all time

only because he beat Strickland in Hong Kong otherwise he'd be 10

I watched Efren play straight pool and a washed up Dallas West gave him all he could handle..

tuff to go off of 1 set.
reyes is the best all around player of all time.
they are just trying to see who is 2nd.

reyes is the best all around player of all time.
.

Nick Varner has won a world championship in every discipline

Efren has not

Nick Varner won the US open 9ball twice in a row

Efren has not

Nick Varner won a world straight pool title with a field of Sigel, Mizerack Rempe. Hopkins..

Efren hasn't won one period

Danny D once told me every great all around player was once a great straight pool player..

Efren lost to a washed up Dallas West..14.1

the top 5 on my list squash Dallas West in his prime 14.1

just sayin

I don't believe that for a second.

I don't believe it either. I remember Efren in the mid to late 80's when he came here and he was very good but he got even better by the 90's, I would say the best I saw him play was between 1994-2000. So I really can't see how he could have been at his best before he came here...that would have to mean that his game had already gone down by the 80's but then miraculously went up again in his 40's?!! That just doesn't happen...I mean yes a player's game can go up late in life (as Efren's did) but not after it had already gone down.

so all the guys above reyes on your list
you would be on vs reyes if they both were in their prime?

yea pretty much.. if we have a list of those who can beat reyes any game it's a diffrent list but the top 5 don't twich

now make your case that Reyes is a better all around player than Varner

I agree with most of your picks here, except 3 Cushion, contrary to popular belief Reyes is no where near the 3 Cushion player everyone thinks he is...about a 1.0 avg, (top pros avg about 1.8-2.1) Varner is right around 1.0 also, so I think it's a toss up. Varner is hands down the 14.1 favorite though.

It's very close IMO but I think Reyes gets the edge all-around.

14 .1 i have no clue

(Samuel L Jackson voice)shiiiiiit....thats all you had to say

the Greatest player on earth TODAY is Oliver Ortman why??? He's the reighning world straight pool champion..

if you don't understand WHY that makes him the best.. you should stick to gambling in the back room.. and wave to the big kids when they walk by

if you think Varner can't play one pocket even with anyone.. LOL you don't know how to play one pocket..

my 1 pocket game is terrible.. but my straight pool game is fair so that instantly makes me better than half of all 1 pocket players..

and PS my head is fine...

would you play this shot?? in a champoinship?? oh wait you don't win championships you just win money LOL

While I admittedly know nothing about anything, the shot at 17 minutes looks like he was playing safe behind the gaggle of balls on the rail and it went...

so that out makes him the best player today?
stick to playing in your house.

well the fat's vs Mosconi argument is as old as pool..

and your side keeps losing.. despite being better at calculating odds or so they say

I think that says alot about this whole argument..

have a nice day.. hope you beg some outlandish weight that you don't really need..

I'm just going to keep working on my game...

i dont ever beg for weight.
playing the best players in the world i do need weight
i know this.

Varner One pocket

I personally watched Varner beat Frost with ease back in like 2003 or 2004. It was right before he had some health issues.

I believe he beat Frost out of 7 or 8 games in no time.

Most people have never seen Nick play the game in his prime, but I wouldn't bet against him playing anybody from things I've heard.

i do need weight
i know this.

that is the primary reason you are not one of the best in the world..

you question your own ability... that is why you don't have what it takes..

when you play for the right to call yourself the best in the world .. YOU have to believe it..or no one else ever will

you don't.. and never will

at some point it stops being ability and becomes attitude..

you are not and will never be a champion

Good morning all :-)

This discussion comes up from time to time-- and it s just nice to discuss about it, because it just shows, that some of the greatest will never be forgotten.
In my opinion impossible to name here just one person. About the *old* legends like Mosconi, "Babe" Cranfield, Greenleaf,Lassiter etc i m not able to comment. I just know from hearing what they were able to do.

From the guys i know i could name several. But for sure i would call out here Earl Strickland as one of the best (if not the best) player over a decade. Efren Reyes in my opinion is a living legend already. He makes things under pressure, which are just crazy. And so the most of us could name for sure about 10 names who would deserve to be named as one of the greatest.
Imo i would name Efren Reyes, Earl Strickland, Buddy Hall, Jim Rempe and Nick Varner. Too hard to pick one out of them.
Further it s somethin of own preferences. means just point of views how we see and interprete how they celebrated this great game.

For myself Efren is the *Magician* because he did so crazy shots under pressure some guys never even thought of during practice. And also because he s such a wonderful nice man.

lg from overseas and now read all those names ....and so going to watch some hours old video files ^^

lg from overseas,

Ingo
