Last week I'm at FELT in Denver. The place is pretty dead. Just me and an older black man named Ron talking. He's very nice with a great smile. I'm pretty much begging him to play me even knowing this guy is probably insanely good or was. Finally I got a table by myself and he then joined me. His pool ability wasn't the greatest (but he could shoot decent) and he was limping due to a knee injury. That night I'm surfing the channels and low and behold there's Ron being interviewed on a local Fox channel.
Turns out this very friendly guy I spent an hour or two with is Ron Lyle the great boxer. Check out some of his youtube videos boxing Ali and George Foreman etc. He says he hangs out at Felt because he lives close and is retired. His cue was very cool, super thin with no wrap. I'm looking forward to seeing him again. I'm sure we will have much more to talk about the next time. The George Foreman fight is regarded as one of the greatest of all time. Check it out.

Love these stories...

These are the types of stories I enjoy hearing/reading. Thanks for sharing!

Nice story there, Medalist. I've never really bumped into anyone at the poolhall that was famous, but I did bump into akaTrigger once or twice, and although she may not be all that famous, DAMN that girl is H-O-T and sweeter than a glass of tea in Texas !!!

Outstanding!

Max Eberle was on Facebook the other day showing pics of him and Roberto Duran playing pool at one of the new Billiard clubs in Las Vegas. He was posing with Roberto and I responded to Max that Roberto had gotten old and that he could take him. :D

Edwin Reyes introduced me to Manny Pacquio at a tournament in the Philippines. He played a demonstration match against one of the Filipino heartthrob male actors who was also a pool nut. He introduced me to the actor also but I was so blown away upon meeting Manny that I didn't pay much attention to the actor. Edwin and Linds were hosting the tournament which was in a Mall in Manilla. They had TV coverage on all the matches and a standing room crowd. The Philippines really is the Mecca for pool. It's no wonder they excel! There were billboards everywhere with Efren Reyes hawking San Miguel Beer. Manny P and Efren are their most popular athletes in the country and EVERYONE knows of them.

One afternoon back in the '80's Tom Cruise came into my poolroom. He was in Cincinnati filming "Rain Man" which was the movie he did right after TCOM. He was still interested in pool and had a few hours to kill that afternoon and had a Taxi driver bring him to the "action room" in Cincinnati. He sat by himself kind of in the shadows just watching what was going on in the room. I didn't recognize him at first because he was wearing sunglasses which was the reason I checked him out to begin with. I said hi to him and he asked me not to make a fuss or let people know who he was so he could relax and enjoy his break time. After a while he asked me if I would call him a cab and no one had realized he was even in the room but me until he left and I told some of the regulars. We also had one of the local news guys Clyde Grey who was a pretty regular customer. I'm told that in California and New York it's not uncommon to see celebrities in some of the pool rooms.

There's a small room here in the poconos (actually the room that marcus aka fastandloose used to own) anyway years back when the original owner had the room I know Lennox Lewis visited the room. He trained at Brookdale resort and I know he was in the room a few times anyway. I bumped into him at my barber shop one day. He's a big dude, gotta go 6'6 or better. Also, there was a bar near my home. They had weekly 8-ball tournaments there every we'd night. One night as the tournament was winding down in walked Paul Sorvino. He was in alot of mob movies including casino, goodfellas, etc. Anyway he was a nice guy, shot some 9ball with us drank a beer or two and left. Turns out he lived up here at the time, not a bad player either.

Was it the same day that Duran got s***faced on three bottles of wine and Ermanno asked him to leave? LOL.

That's a great story. I would have been begging Tom to get on a table also. Wait a minute I beg anyone to get on a table when I have no one to shoot with. When Shane walks into Felt, previously Table Stakes its pretty exciting. When he starts shooting you go into a euphoric state.

I remember that fight w/ Forman and it was a fight to remember, down goes Lyle, down goes Formen, down goes Lyle, down goes Forman, down and out goes Lyle. Yep its still the best fight I ever saw. Thanks for bringing me back to when boxing was truly the best time in heavyweight history. I can't tell you who's who today..lol

Ok so I don't know when I will see him next, but I'm going to watch the youtube videos again so if he enjoys talking about the Ali and Foreman fights I'll have good questions. I will post when that happens. Maybe a picture also.

Yes! Ron Lyle is one of our regulars at Felt and comes in just about everyday. He is a TOTAL teddy bear, VERY sweet man. He just sits around and hangs out and people-watches. He's our local legend for sure.

Here's a great pic of him from my recent Player Appreciation Party last month:

Pivot at the hip, like in 90/90. ;-)

You should get him to show you how you how to execute a right cross. It won't help your pool game but it might close some eyes. :D
