Well if you wanted to played at Starbilliards, since your a foreinger, you dont need to register as explained by Sygfrid, you can just come and go to the place, well its open from 4pm till 2am in the morning. They have 45 poll tables and all free to use

Clothes, well just wear something comfortable, usually in the summer months its hot

Well you'll just be staying for 16 days, what are your plans just to play pool???? Every single day????
Oneside and Pan Pacific is where some of the pros stays, just be careful with some hustlers, they will play you for some $50 race to ? Thanks so much for the offer. With the weather recommendations, I am now definitely thinking about October/November of 2012. One of my friends is a professional player who may have some exhibitions/competitions scheduled; and I will try to work around that schedule if possible.

I will post on AZB a few months before I go; I hope we do have the opportunity to meet and play.

Willie, you're going to have to call me.

JH,
Thanks for all of the great advice. Looking at the weather recommendations, I am now thinking October/November 2012 is going to be the time to go. One of my professional friends is desperately wanting to accompany us for some of the trip; and she may have some exhibitions or competitions there - we will try to schedule around her.

How about I treat you to a dinner at Binions at this years DCC, and we can pick your brain about plans for the trip??

Willie,

Here's a little more unsolicited advice.

Electric in the Philippines is single phase 220, and the outlets are 2 prong. Most laptops and cellphone chargers will automatically switch, other small appliances may not - be sure to check.

Philippine mobile telecoms Smart & Globe operate on 900/1800/2100 Mhz GSM networks. If your moble phone is GSM Tri-band or better it will likely work there. If your phone has a provider lock, you can ask your service provider for an unlock code, then use a Philippine SIM for local service. I recommend that because it's affordable, about 50 pesos for a SIM card. Prepaid airtime (aka peso-load) is available in various denominations virtually everywhere - texting is the preferred line of communication. Smart seems to have the best coverage in Metro Manila.

There are also Internet cafes everywhere, and while affordable, I'd strongly recommend against using those places for anything other than casual surfing.

Best wishes for a fun and safe trip.

Thanks again; I hadn't even thought about those things.

I have been thinking about "going bare" with no watch, no cell phone, no computer; if the pro doesn't go with us, it will just be pool/matching up all day every day; one great meal a day, subsistence eating the rest of the time. Just need an adequate place to sleep (fancier if the pro goes with us).

How does playing for no money go down in PI? Are they generally up for friendly games? I hate gambling!

I'm not sure about your question, but we are planning CONTINUOUS small stakes gambling - all the pros of my acquaintance feel this is a great way to improve my game at its current level.

I have been told that most places will have "matchmakers" who will set up fair games for you, rack the balls, keep score, hold the stakes, pay the table time, and distribute the money at the end of the match. Usually there is no "woofing" and cordiality is the rule of the day win or lose - very different from the U.S. I've been told (and I HOPE its true).

Sounds good to me. I am going in three weeks and will be working at the World Pool Masters (Sept. 3-5) and the World Cup of Pool (Sept. 6-11). The Predator Ten Ball follows these two as well, so September is a great month for pool in Manila. Many of the top players will be there. These events are typically held in the center courtyard of a major mall with bleacher seating erected to accommodate the crowds. Hundreds (if not thousands) more will line the balconies, stretching three and four levels high. Biggest audiences I've ever seen for pool. Or you can sit in the comfort of your hotel room and watch LIVE coverage on TV every day. Plus follow the action by reading the sports section of one of the various English language newspapers. Pool is a big deal in the Philippines! And the top pros are celebrities over there.

In most of the small rooms around Manila, you will see few, if any, Westerners playing pool. You can get action (I have) in almost any of these rooms, but it will likely be for small stakes ($2-10 a game). In the larger rooms (One Side and Pan Pacific) where the good players hang out, you can play for as little or as much as you want. It is wise to put up the money beforehand if you are betting more than a couple of dollars. I did have one experience playing Bank Pool for 1,000p ($22) a game where I had some difficulty getting paid. Pay after every game is a Cardinal rule over there.

In the small rooms they will generally only play Rotation (a great game by the way, with their own special rules), or maybe Eight Ball. There are fairly good sized rooms all over Metro Manila, and I haven't scratched the surface yet. I wish I had started going there 25-30 years ago when I was a serious pool player. I probably would have never left. :D
