A shot I found interesting

Was this example with 3 foul? If so the player might opt to shoot the 1 past the 6 and lock the cue up to the 6. If the player misses the kick he/she is on 2 and you can decide to run out with the 1 closer to the 2 and for easier shape or attempt a 3 foul by playing another safe.

If no 3 foul I would play the one in the far side and send the cue past the 10. If you hit it good and are not on the rail play 2 rail shape to the 3 between the 7 and 9

It is rare to see a thread with so many great posts...

Thanks to all contributors. I will link to this thread when explaining position to my learning friends.

It's entirely possible that you and everybody else in this thread is a better player than I so I'm not trying to sound like a know it all, but I like Sigel's path better. The reason is because it looks like you will have a hard time avoiding running into a ball while pocketing the 3 ball and you run the risk of tying up balls. Sigel never disturbs a ball during his run.

It's difficult to question anything Sigel does, given his success and undeniable knowledge at the game. I do think that the shot he chose could have turned out a lot worse, however. He landed in a very small window where he was not hooked by the 9, but still had a good angle to go one rail back uptable. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he didn't play for that precise spot, but I would say that ordinary players would not normally be well served by that same position route, nor would most of them have the control necessary to hit that little one-rail punch shot from the 2 to the 3 as nicely as Mike Did. We can learn a lot from watching players like Mike, but we also have to keep in mind that he's got about 12 more clubs in his bag than the average player.

Neil's two-rail route is by far the best route to avoid being hooked, which should be the main concern for most players. Coming into the line of the shot is usually the best method. I say usually because there are times when you want to be anywhere but straight in, and in those cases coming across the line of the shot may be the best option. On this shot, I would really not want to be straight in on the two, so I would avoid playing into the gap between the 9 and 10.

Three rails short side works as long as it's not 760. I would pick shot A every time, but I think shot B is there... maybe.

Definite maybe, agreed. I have been known to put CB there on puropse as well:scratchhead:.

Great response re: sigel (above) as well, mr!

Ball in hand....

JohnnyP's point about Neil's shot is a good one, gotta watch spinning out. He probably has a good stun stroke and that is why he put his bih where he did. A lot of inexperienced players would also put low on it, making JohnnyP's point as well. It might be a slightly harder reach, but if you started with slightly more angle on Neil's cueball, it should follow into the first rail and go more along his line with less risk of spinning or drawing too deep into the corner and across the line of the 2. Great job diagramming though Neil, because for myself I like the stun more as laid out in your diagram.

edit- oops! I guess Neil does use some follow.... I must have been looking crooked the first look!

Good idea if.....

Best is 1-10 combination with safety behind the 6 ball :yikes:

.... if the 1 hits the right side of the 10 so that you're not risking a safe on yourself. And yes, I am aware that makes the opponent's kick easier. But I would rather not beat myself with an accidental 10 in the corner.

LOL in my scenario i will call 10 on corner,,, 2 way shot.

The 1 has to travel 3 feet or more in order for the cue ball to follow all the way to the 6 (6:1 ratio of travel for the 1 ball and CB).
