Why not, unless you are talking about a break cue with a non-leather tip? All Mike's cues come with leather tips now, including his break cues.
 
I was talking about the older ones. I have one . Do I need to change the tip? Thanks for replying.

Only if you're playing in the BCAPL league, you must use a leather tip for breaking. I haven't seen other leagues follow suit with their rule books.

I have a water buffalo tip on my old Adam that I used to break with for many years. I have a Gulyassy Orange Crusher now but don't know what kind of tip is on it. I didn't care when I bought it.
Also, I had an early Sledgehammer for several years and it came with a leather tip.
 
I just didn't want to throw this one away!

Break tip

I use a Sumo water buffalo (non layered) tip which I cut down low to the ferrule without much curve and it works great for breaking and jumping balls.

That is actually the best thing to do. I did this with a bunjee jumper and it could jump nearly as well as with the phenolic tip.

Don if the cue has a one piece jump break ferrule, and you want it legal for BCA League play all you have to do is make the end flat and glue a leather tip directly upon the one piece ferrule assembly.

I have modified a number of cue built this way, and it should cost little more than the price of a tip, it will take a repairman a minute to trim the end of the ferrule flat and glue the tip to it.

my new FT2 ferrule and a Samsara tip is the best set up there is. I can modify your old Sledgehammer to my new specs.
 
Not to change the subject, but,,,,,,has anyone found any joint protectors to fit the sledgehammer pins? I don't think Mike sells them anymore. I asked Jim Baxter to make me a set, but he couldn't guarantee they would fit the pin.
