Hi Jay, actually Dennis had 2 wins here in the Philippines, both San Miguel sponsored events and both "all- Filipino", one was in 2008 and the other one was last year...however, this is Dennis' first "international event" win here in the Philippines...his closest was during the World Pool Masters 2 weeks ago where he lost to Ralf Souquet in the finals...Believe it or not, this is Dennis' first big win at home. He had never won a tournament in the Philippines, so I'm sure this means a lot to him. By the way it was $10,000 for first.
Funny thing, I sold some old copies of P&B mag to Bob Jewett and before mailing them out, I leafed through them one more time. These were issues from 1985, over 25 years ago! There were several tournaments that year that offered first prizes of over 10K, including the Last Call For 9-Ball at Resorts with a $30,000 first prize (won by Wade Crane over Buddy Hall, who got 15K for second), Buddy won the last Caesars Tahoe event that paid $15,000 and also Willards in Chicago with 15K on top. The BC Open paid $25,000 for first and there were several other events with good purses.
That was very good money in those days, and there were a plethora of tournaments for pro players. Most of them had five or ten thousand in added money, with similar size first prizes. Players actually stayed on the road back then, driving from tournament to tournament. NO ONE knows the highways of the Eastern USA better than Buddy Hall, you can believe that.
