What would you do here??

Bank the 3 as if the upper right corner were available - kill the cue ball behind the 5 (or possibly the 4) and leave the 3 near center of the right short rail.

But I would probably put too much low right on the cue ball, miscue and leave the opponent straight in to one of corners. ;)

The thin right cut on the three leaving the cue near the upper right corner might be higher percentage for some - but some of us have to aim at the ball in the middle.

Play it like a bar table..........

You got two blockers there...maybe u play it safe....and it doesnt matter what the score is u should always play the right shot..just saying..:D

On the bar table first of all you want to leave your opponent with no straight access to the object ball if possible. Doing so can be a sellout because of the luck factor just being able to hit it.

I would be tempted to hit the 3 ball real thin on the right side and bring the cue ball up in the kitchen behind the 6 and the nine. They will almost act like a screen play in football with the blockers. How have about a foot wide area to get to for a great safe. If you go too far and the cue ball gets to the head rail so what. Still leaves a tough shot.

At the bottom of the table the 3 ball could also give then trouble if it gets behind the 4 or 5 which might happen.

On the bar table this is a fairly easy shot. If successful you will probably get ball in hand.

The goal here is to have your opponent kicking at least 2 rails when you are done or if kicking one rail have to worry about hitting the 4 or the 5 first resulting in ball in hand.

This is absolutely what I would do on the bar table.

Have a great day geno..........

Come on Gene, the shot your shooting is the the tougher shot..also 2 pockets u can scratch in..it sells out more then ducking behind the 4 and 5.Play the cb only duck behind the two balls..im just a D player so i could be wrong.:p

The Pat Fleming double kiss shot would be an option or thin the 3 and bring the cue ball two rails trying to get behind the 6.

I haven't read the other replies. But I would play safe off the left side of the 3 ball leaving the cb close to or frozen to the 4 ball.

Joey A has the right shot, IMHO, particularly since there isn't a table length between cue ball and the object ball. It shouldn't be too demanding to thin the right side of the three with outside and go two rails in front of and then behind the eight ball off the third rail. It's a fairly large hook zone and I think it's important to go with an aggressive safety here. You've got to grab the momentum, and I think that's the best change to lock him up and create distance.

Page 3 is what I did. I played the safe. As usual, when I play a safe, I get it stuck to me. Page 4 shows what he did. The lines aren't real accurate, but he kicked at it with english, made the 3 cross side, and ran out from there. Next game he breaks and leaves the 9 on the lip of the head end corner pocket with the one 6" away and a open shot on the one. Oh well, after that I did beat Kirkwood and came in second. edit- for some reason, wei table is acting up today.??? This only shows what he did. But you can see the safe I played. I thought I had a good safe. Wrong again.

CueTable Help

That's a good safety Neil with an unfortunate outcome. If you would've played just to miss the double kiss on the 3 it would have left the 3 further away from the rail and making him kick 2 rails.

The thin hit off the right side of the 3 and coming around 2 or 3 rails to hide behind the 8 is the option I will shoot every time... This is a safety that comes up so often that you should be practicing it at length.... I only have about 6 ROTE safes in my bag and this one is in it.....

A lot depends upon what type of cue ball you are using..... Once that heavy, mud ball gets to rolling, often only a large pocket will stop it.

I try to get the cue ball behind the 6. It looks to me like the 6 keeps the cue ball from scratching in the corner, and if you scratch in the side from that angle...god just hates you. If you fail to get behind the 6, you still have the 9 as a blocker. If you dont get behind the 9, the 3 ball is probably behind the 4 or 5 anyway. I feel like any way you try to get behind the 8, you're risking a scratch. Even with Joey A's path around the 8, you could hit the 8 and still scratch.

It seems Neil hit the shot pretty well and his opponent was pretty lucky, but I think at best his leave was a semi-easy hit on the 3 and that if you dont hit that shot with perfect touch like he did, you sell the 3 in the side.

I like it on both ends. This is not a tough shot for me unless the table plays real bad.

The only thing you need to worry about on the side is hitting the tit. I would play the shot toward the side and really try to control the speed.

It's kind of a 2 way shot. Get 'em here or get'em there.

I like it alot. But that's me...........

Set the shot up and try it. But if your not confident about hitting the exact amount of the 3 you are aiming at it will seem real difficult.

CueTable Help

It seems you played a decent safe. But any time your opponent is allowed to the table there is always the possibility he may pocket the ball be it executing a difficult shot or just getting lucky. There are a lot of variables in determining what safe shot to take in any given situation. The type of table, bar box, 9' etc. The condition of the table, rails, cloth, speed, type of cue ball. As well your personal stye of play that includes your offensive style, your personal abilities with both the Ob & CB.

An option that would likely be a preference for me , allowing that the proper conditions exist would be a sort of stun, kill shot just barely left of center on the 3 running the CB off the rail into the 4,5 sending the 3 down table short of the corner pocket. That allowes for the 4,5 to come into play as well as the 9,6 to become blockers to a direct hit. Risky? Maybe but every safe shot has inherient risk attatched to it.

In the end you make the best choice available at the time in accordence with the circumstances you are presented with. You execute as best you can, evaluate the outcome, store the information for future reference & move on. Sometimes it works out to your advantage, sometimes it doesn't.You played a decent safe. It just didn't work out for you that time. It happens. To quote a phrase "Better luck next time".

Good luck & good pool
