The gambling "lingo"

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get this thread going as far as some of the gambling lingo used. For instance : "Race to 11 for a nickel, but you gotta post the roll first !!":grin-devilish:. A league player might hear that and not know what it means :scratchhead: until they find out they have to put $500 on the light.

What are some of the other gambling terms used, and thier definitions ?

I know most, but there is one i've been seeing that I dont understand:

"I'll play you on the roof if you give me 2 balls"

Anybody??

How about if an APA 3 player, overheard two guys matching up a one pocket game..."OK, you got 8 to 6 and the cracks, and one pick,..for a deuce a rattle,...or put up five large...and we'll freeze it up, first one to 6 ahead"...What would he think...:D :D :D

Great post, SJDinPHX. Ok, I'll taking a stab at a few.....

8 to 6, I have no idea. Cracks would be the break.

One pick ?

A deuce a rattle ?

Five large = $500

Freeze it up, first one to six ahead....... If one of the players is six ahead, then that match is over, and the 'six ahead' guy gets paid ?

Please translate

"We are playing races to 5 for a cecil a set. I only have 1 barrel though and if I lose I'm not running it back and firing an air cannon."

"This dude came out the gates with a 4 pack. I was down 4 racks going to 5 until I got a shot off a dry break in the 5th rack. Only thing I did wrong was lose the toss."

"You got the called 8, races to 7 9ball, snaps don't count in the back 2."

Cool thread. The "language" of pool is amazing. You can go up to another pool player and say any of this and they exactly what you mean, but a non-player has no clue. But I guess it's like that with anything you get involved in.

"Thought I had him locked down tight until he pulled out shorty and went airborne."

8 to 6, I have no idea. that is a one pocket spot, one goes to 8, the other 6.

One pick ? this is my guess, a player gets to pick a ball off the table in a 1 pocket game anytime and it counts for him and he can pick any ball. very strong.

A deuce a rattle ? i dont know?? prob 2k per game.

Five large = $500, i would think 5 k

Freeze it up, first one to six ahead....... If one of the players is six ahead, then that match is over, and the 'six ahead' guy gets paid ? well, correct but freeze means somebody has to lose and usually the money goes "frozen" on top of a light or something.

I still wanna know what "on the roof" means.

"They took the rail off"

Normal person might think that means someone missed a shot or literally removed a rail on the table.

A railbird knows they got got!

That nit air barreled me and stuck me with the time.

You're a lock artist.

You're a no bet nit!

He's rackin' the dark meat on the wing.

On the pop.

I'll play the miracle Z in the corner.

He's the dog catcher.

Break out the George Forman.

Barbeque anyone?

Where did you drain the rock?

Lost your roadmap, Sport?

Hey, A@#$%&, pay me my money or your going to get your head cracked.......................OOPS, my bad, not a pool term we want to hear................LOL:grin:

Great post! I try a few of them but they sure have changed since I played alot...

From Icon of Sin:
Thought I had him locked down tight until he pulled out shorty and went airborne." I played a good safety on him and he could not hit a ball until he got his jump stick and jumped the ball.

We are playing races to 5 for a cecil a set. I only have 1 barrel though and if I lose I'm not running it back and firing an air cannon." We were playing a set of race to five games for $100. I only have $100 on me and if I lose, I am not going to play again on promised money or credit.

"This dude came out the gates with a 4 pack. I was down 4 racks going to 5 until I got a shot off a dry break in the 5th rack. Only thing I did wrong was lose the toss." I was playing a race to five games. My opponent broke first and ran four straight racks. On the fifth rack, he broke and did not make a ball. I finally go to the table.

"You got the called 8, races to 7 9ball, snaps don't count in the back 2."
We will play a race to seven games for the set. You will win the game if you pocket the 8 ball on a called-shot. Nine ball on the break does not count unless you make it in the side pocket or the two corner pockets up table.

From fd colorado:

That nit air barreled me and stuck me with the time. In my time, a Nit was a person who had the money on him but would only bet when he was a shoe-in to win. A predator so to speak, a Nit would not play someone equal or better than they. Air barrel means he did not pay or did not have the money on him. We used to call that "Ghosting." I am guessing the Nit played, lost, and skipped out without paying or did not have the money to pay and the opponent had to pay the table fees.

You're a lock artist. You play great safeties.

You're a no bet nit! Mentioned above.

He's rackin' the dark meat on the wing. He is intentionally placing the eight ball or another key ball at the corners of the third row of a nine ball rack, hoping to have them go in on the break.

On the pop. Nine ball on the break.

I'll play the miracle Z in the corner. Two rail bank into the corner pocket.

He's the dog catcher. No clue.

Break out the George Forman. A heavy hitting stick, shot, or using a break cue?

Barbeque anyone? Well, we used a similar phrase when there was good action and a piece was open to others to gamble on. Might not be the same today.

Where did you drain the rock? Again a similar phrase but "train the rock" meant Where did you play?

Lost your roadmap, Sport? Played excessive motion on the cue ball and got hooked or out of line.

Feel free to correct me. I still remember using terms like "groovy" :D

A lock artist or locksmith is someone who only bets when the odds are drastically in his favor. Lock bets...

You're a no bet nit! Mentioned above.
The way we use it, a nit is someone who calls everyone out but won't bet a nickel.

He's rackin' the dark meat on the wing. He is intentionally placing the eight ball or another key ball at the corners of the third row of a nine ball rack, hoping to have them go in on the break.
Lol...never heard that one before. Dark meat?!?!

On the pop. Nine ball on the break.
On the snap, Vincent!!

I'll play the miracle Z in the corner. Two rail bank into the corner pocket.

He's the dog catcher. No clue.
Well, a dog is someone who misses clutch shots when the pressure is on...so a dog catcher must be ??? idk.

I'll take a guess at this one. I think he's asking which pocket you scratched in.

There needs to be a pool dictionary.

'I'll play you on the roof' probably means 'I'll bet as much as you want'.

and a pick in 1-hole means you can pick up a ball after the break and spot it. allows for more aggressive break shots.
