Good Bye Pool, Hello Gym...

I got dibs John, but I'll move out of the way and accept a Szam or Tad so you can have the Boar :)

Ok thanks bud,I want the one that plays good! I'm thinking Fatboy might give her to me.He's a vary nice and good man,ya know. It's funny,I'm talking with him right now!John B

I agree. My point was based more around what a quality personal trainer is. That's nothing personal to you though. I have seen a lot of trainers who were getting paid to be nothing more then cheerleaders. We both know there is a lot more to it then that.

Not everyone who trains for strength is an "ego lifter". Some of the best in the world are the nicest guys in the gym,and would dedicate way more time then they should to people who are just seeking some advice.Even though strength training isn't for everyone,to some people it is. If you get to pursue something you love and have success at it,you will be a happy person. That's regarding all sides of life. You could easily say the same for top bodybuilders. Fatboy knows Jay Cutler. I've met Jay.I'm willing to bet Fatboy would say Jay's a very happy guy. If he was a plumber,he wouldn't be Jay Cutler.

If someone is an arrogant asshole because they are huge or because they can lift a monster truck over sears tower, then they'd be an asshole just the same if they couldn't.

You gotta be talking about Anthony Clark. He was a huge human being. Unique underhand style bench press. He was a record breaker with it.

If you got back in the gym, your life would change. Get something going for yourself and stick to it.I know you have been around some very serious guys. The more time you waste the less time you are alive.

Wow weird thing today it was 7am Sunday morning and Jay Cutler TXT me, thats early for him. And while this thread is going, it was the "After the O" txt we do every year. I met Jay back in 03, he moved to Vegas and didnt really know lots of ppl. I trained with Frank Hillebrand(My best friend who passed away in Feb) and a Very Prominent Plastic's Dr. in Vegas. Of Course Jay knew who Frank was and he started talking to Fank, Jay was bigger and better even back then but showed Frank more respect than one might think. A week later I was alone in the gym and JAy and I were working out close by and he started talking to me, been friends since.

Here is the strongest thing ever, I took my mom to a BB show NPC Nationals or something perhaps in 2003-before she got cancer, Jay was there just signing, I introduced them and they got the rap going, my mom could talk to anyone. Moving forwards after her cancer got so bad her voice box was removed, she was reading the news paper and saw Jay's pic with Ronnie in it. She asked me(in writting her voice was gone) if that was the same Jay. "Yup mom it is". I cant remember if Jay wins or takes 2nd that year 04. I left him a voice mail telling him my mom was dieing of cancer soon and about the news paper article she asked me about. Six days after the "O" Jay is at my mom's house and did a private guest pose for her, for long as she wanted. He was in peak condition and cancelled photo shoots to go see my mom. That was the greatest gift I ever received from a friend. I forever will beholden to Jay for that. That's how Jay rolls. I have offered many things, favors anything to reciprocate and Jay is cool with it. Forever I will always be there for him should he ever call.

Yeah Anthony Clark(I couldnt remember), Great guy spoke to him 3 times over the years. I'll save that story for later. I have a cool story about watching him warm up.

One week in the books at the gym, i feel great, had a bit of a flu bug on/off which has happened when I first start back to the gym after a lay-off. I thinks the stress to my body compermises my immune system a bit for a few days, its happened many times. I'm fine now.

Ok so on to pool, I trained this week real light, no forced reps or drop sets. Just went to failure with 8-12 rep's depending on muscle, less on lats more on delts etc etc. Its not like I'm in a rut with my training, I did cardio everyday, felt great. heart felt great, I did 40 mins on my longest day 20 on the first day. Oh yeah pool. I took yesterday off cause I didnt feel good, I'm off the gym today and am going to play tonite. I dont feel too sore to play, if anything I feel better and while my touch wont be there my head will. Sometimes being in the mood to rally play helps my concentration.

I think going to the gym is the best move for my pool game, but only one week in the books its a bit earily to see how its going to end up.

My Docs in Germany told me years ago "Go to the gym when you feel ready"; problem is I hurt too bad to go to the gym up to 12 weeks ago, I built up my strength over the past 12 weeks to get started now. Thats the story there. Swimming hurts like hell. I sink like a rock in water b/c my body fat % isnt that high, but i'm buoyant enuff that it takes some pressure off my lumbar region of my spine and that hurts(i know thats the oppsite of 99.45346344% of most people), so no swimming for me, unless i can stand in a pool. thats it. Swimming laps/excerosing in a pool hurts like hell after a short time.

Good luck Fatboy,Can I have your BB? I'll take good care of her. Thanks,John B.

she is in the mail, 2 cracked ferrels, another shaft has no tip and the 4th shaft has a flat tip.
LOL I need to get her is for a tune up.

Anytime you want to use that cue and I'm there-its my pleasure. What the hell good are things if you cant share them with friends?(except for Kelly ;):) )

best

Fatboy

Besides maybe you can teach that cue a thing or 2 about banks ;), to hell with teaching players-teach cues.

I got dibs John, but I'll move out of the way and accept a Szam or Tad so you can have the Boar :)

hell i might have a boar thats 2 grams lighter than the one your talking about. Is that close enuff? I have 2 identical playing cues, with identical balance points, diameters, everything. Its not possible to tell them apart buy how they play, they just look a bit different. I did this so just incase the worst happens I have a back-up. My old man always said "Ones good, Two's better", that usually pisses off the girls but what can ya do? cant keep everyone happy all the time:p;)

All BS aside, I been real lucky and real unlucky in life. My best friend who died in Feb told me this once when I met him 11-12 years ago:

"My biggest fear in life is to be average"

I never looked at it like that until I heard those words but I cant argue with that., infact I agree with it 100%. Things, Stuff, Toys are great but whats greater is having people in your life that you can share with, dont mean be a sucker and let ppl rob you. Or be soft and stupid. But having people who put you first above themselfs because they want to. Thats not only class its better than any toy ever.

Wow the coffee is kicking in

I lifted 2700 pesos once, but I had to put it right back down. :D
The heaviest thing I ever lift is a 19 ounce cue!

Depending on the year that could have been one hell of a big bag of coins. like a 100 pounds. They use heavy coins in Mexico.

I saw you using a 19.5oz cue Jay, dont count your self short that extra .5oz is BIG man!!!:p

hope your well, i'm gonna call you this week, mon-tues

cheers

eric

Eric
I don't think you're grasping the concept.

If you want 'weight'....go to a pool hall.

..instead of spending money on 'weight', you might make some.

"Confessions of a Pool Hustler"

Dang I went to walmart bought some weights they were too heavy for me to put in my car, got my money back and left, lmao !

Eric Jay finished 2nd to Ronnie Coleman that year, when Big Ron was on his way to winning 8 straight mr os,we both know what Big Jay has done since ,he won just about ever show hes enter,i am glad to hear what he did for ur MOM ,that shows what kind of man he is and the heart Jay has,Jay Cutler is the best body builder there is now,i believe, and 1 of very few of all time, and his record shows that!Eric i hope u do good and feel great!

Eric you must of been dieting pretty good since last years dcc,to have ur body fat not high,it looked to be pretty high in that video shot by cali red at last years dcc(woofing in the hall)that hot dog you were woofing down had no chance, lol,it look like u were hurring up so no one ask for a bite, just kidding Eric,i think that is a great idea to deit down before you start working out again.

Consider I am weak by most actually strong peoples standards. But, the normal person is shocked to know that AFTER injuring my back my skinny butt(145) built up to a 285 pound deadlift within 8 months of barely being able to pick up 125 without hurting myself(post injury). Slow and steady progress is the key(eg microloading). As long as I am better than the day before I am happy.

I basically did a modified starting strength program with some hip mobility emphasis and a light jog and my back pain was gone(although mine was not as serious as the OP"S was). Hip mobility is HUGE especially for (a lot-but not necessarily all) people with back pain. If you can't get motion out of the hips you have to get it somewhere else. Take for instance a lot of people that you see at the end of a deadlift where they do the huge hitch because they can't fire through with the hips.

To those who say max weight lifted training is bad for you. I ask you this is that ALL you were doing? Or was there mobility work, high rep training, deloads etc? Were you working in different planes of motion? Most powerlifters only work in the up down plane of motion (saggital plane). Anything which you do over and over is bad for you. Do you realize how many repetitive strain injuries runners get? The stronger you are the MORE injury resistant u are- as long as ur program is balanced, u use good form and you don't overdo your volume(part of program balance but needs to be stated) and you are doing exercises which are appropriate for your own body. When you are stronger you don't have to use as much energy for your "regular" daily tasks. The less energy u take the less likely u are to get injured.

For someone with a back injury I would NOT suggest the doctor be the ONLY source of info for rehab. They know little to nothing about how to fix things outside of surgery and drugs.

First source of info should of course be the Physical therapist (which I am sure u had). Since the OP sounds like they are fairly educated-a good but slightly technical resource is http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Fitn...1804/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1318243046&sr=8-4

After u read that u will be better equipped with specific questions to ask your PT ( hopefully u had a good one. There are the lemons as in everything). Some good online resources are mikereinold.com for physical therapy content, eric cressey's blog for more performance geared stuff-but he does have a lot of stuff on injuries as well.

Some other possible resources would be Active release technique (http://www.activerelease.com), acupuncture etc. Do some research and ask your doctor and physical therapist whether these would be appropriate measures in this case. If they have to ask you what it is then the opinion is probably not very helpful.

I wish you the best, back pain is the worst

All I know is that when I was a competitive power-lifter from 1979-1984 I had fewer issues then then I do today. Back then I was a Class one in the USPF, with a top hundred Deadlift at 148. In what was my last meet to qualify for the Junior Nationals I missed out by 6 inches, I could not lockout a 600 lb deadlift at 165.

I have not touched a weight since 1984, and though I miss those days, it is not something I want to do again.

If I can offer any advice, I would suggest to Eric to focus on a cardio program, with low impact training. Someone mentioned swimming before, that is what I would do.

Low impact cardio? 3x your body weight force on your body with every step. For a large man taking a whole lot of steps I would not call that low impact...especially with back issues. All cardio is higher impact than most people realize. Not to say that that means it is bad-but probably bad for the wrong person. If I remember correctly though it seems as though the impact didn't cause issues(surprising) as with even a "minor" problem running aggravated me.

Finally after 6 years of hell(back problems, 5 monster operations, 427,943 pills). I finally feel good enough to go to the gym. I stopped pool in 94ish and started the gym because of back pain, the gym made the pain go away. I liked the gym, I never had the desire to compete or the genitics, I was too fat-best I could do was a 4 pack of abs(kinda funny same for 9 ball-if I could break it would be lots more:mad:). So I'm a 4-Pac Body Builder and 4-Pack pool player. LOL I look the worst I have since 94 because I havent been able to go to the gym in 5.5 years, I went until i collapsed in pain. I never looked great, but I did like how I looked then compared to now and more importantly I felt better. Feeling good was my main motivation to go to the gym.

Since I can go to the gym again with out any problems, i'm going. I cant train like before and have to be very careful about my back-I'm gonna give it a shot. I hope it makes me feel better, and when I have reached a point in the gym I'm happy with I'll come back to pool. I know for 6 years I played pool at home when I was 100% gym and I played good 9 ball, But thats the only game I knew how to play back then. Being in good shape made pool seem easy. So I figure taking some time off pool, getting into shape cant harm mny pool game much. Infact I think I got the best of it, If I do it right. I'd like to do both

I think I can do both, before I really couldnt because I was body building and that makes your muscles numb and stiff, you cant stroke the cue right. This time I'm older, not BBing, just getting in shape. Thus I think my pool game will be ok. But I'm stopping pool 90% until the little voice comes along and tells me to go play pool. I'd hope its 90 days but I'll bet its going to be longer.

I'll be around here some and everything Fatboy will be pretty much normal. what ever the hell that means.

I'm really excited about this, i'm starting slow and careful.

Thanks everyone here(yes even the haters),

eric

Oh yeah my new joke-Whats the difference between a loser and a hater? Answer: The last 2. LOL

Hey Eric i'm sorry i didn't get to post this earlier. take it from me bro that you don't want to go anywhere near full steam ahead your first couple of weeks back to the gym. To be honest if you really want it to work you're better off just using the first 3 weeks to just build the habit of showing up.

going too hard and getting too sore, or worse getting hurt, will set you back way more than taking it real real slow in the beginning ever could.

i've always played better when i stayed fit. i think exercise and pool is good fo us. as long as you don't play right after an arm or shoulder workout. stay cool bro

bro you're making me feel like a little girl. i just recently added the deadlift to my workout and i felt real good that i got it to 225 when i weighed 150. now you're putting up 600!!!!

i got work to do!

A hair over 500 at at 148. Meets were run in kilos so you had some odd single lifts. Best totals I had at 148 was 1170. 400/270/500

Best total at 165 was 1325. 450/325/550

Squatted more at 165 but not at my last state championship. I tore a groin muscle 2 months prior and could not squat at all till that meet. Only did my opener squat for fear of the leg Jumped from my opener deadlift to 600 which I needed to qualify for the juniors and missed twice.

All of that was a lifetime ago. I would break in half trying that stuff again.

One word. Swimming

As low impact as you can get.

There is another alternative. Plyometric training. Such as bag work (boxing). The person can control the amount of cardio to his condition. It is low impact on the body. It burns more calories than any other exercise. And you can get fit without getting hit. A small double ended bag works great.

Bag work is great....Even shadowboxing makes ur lungs burn like no other.
