Run out..... !!!
...I hit balls all the time with a pretty good idea where they will end up...

Even if the 6 was a tiny bit off the rail, I'd be afraid of coming up straight on it....or too short. I'd try reverse draw(right) off the 5 to avoid the lower side pocket scratch.
And maybe that is why you are at work now, Mr!Not the first part, the second one

For some odd reason I would try to spin the cue ball off the long rail and back over for the 6 on the same side of the rail as the 6 ball, instead of shooting for the other side of the rail. After missing position, I will then proceed to miss the cross side bank shot. Then on my way back to my chair I will go ahead and snap my shaft in frustration.
Is there any other way to play this???

Found a better quality Youtube upload of the Nevel shaft breaking video...

I've found that if you have a ball very close to the rail, and you play the cue ball shape close to that object ball, it is hard to come up straight on it but that's just me. I know what you mean though.
Nah... I actually like my work.
I just understand the relationships between the pool balls fairly well and feel comfortable doing somethings that may not seem "obvious".... I just transition my one pocket and straight pool skill set over into 9 ball and it is very beneficial.
Sometimes people go so far out of the way as to avoid any kind of contact with other balls, they end up with bad position. I'm not saying its always the correct thing to do, but its not necessarily a bad thing.
Or you could just smash the shaft...Alternative I haven't seen mentioned yet.
