Dr. Dave's and Bob Jewett's Video Encyclopedia of Pool Practice (VEPP)

I was gullible enough to click on your "VEPS" link. :withstupid:

Then I was pleasantly surprised. The next time my wife complains about my occasional audible gastrointestinal releases, I'll refer her to your video so she will understand that it could be much, much worse.

Regards,
Dave

Dave:

Spidey was close; only one consonant was "off" -- and that was the first one. It should've been a link to HEPS (hippo's explosive poo[l] shots).

Good one.

HEPS is a powerful and memorable image. Maybe I should use it in my VEPS marketing. ... Not!!!

Catch you later,
Dave

I like Dr. Dave's website. As far as I can tell, he is just explaining ideas and concepts, which is a lot different than stealing other people's work. There is a big difference between the two. I also think information should not be hidden and kept secret.

With that said, I'm just a Level C player looking to improve. I found Dr. Dave's 30 degree rule that uses your fingers in a peace sign really helpful. I was actually looking for drills on YouTube when I found the 30 degree rule, so seeing that Dr. Dave and Bob Jewett have a whole set of videos on drills is great. I will be ordering a set.

Now for a tiny piece of constructive criticism. Are there maybe 10 drills that are absolute musts for quickly improving a C level players game? I think it is great to have 177 drills to choose from, but that's a lot of drills. I'm sure that after watching the videos I'll narrow this down to a workable subset to practice over and over again, but it would be nice to see an asterisk next to what the authors think are some of the key drills.

There are also a few broken links on the website--

I'm glad my stuff has helped you.

Before the DVDs are released, Bob and I will be posting a "How to Use VEPP" document on the website that will recommend practice routines for players of various abilities and for specific skills. This should provide you some helpful guidance.

Thank you for pointing these out. I've addressed them.

Dave

Thanks Lou.

Are you trying to butter me up so you might get some DVDs instead of a lump of coal in that Christmas stocking?

Seriously, I appreciate your kind appraisal of our work.

Regards,
Dave

No buttering up, Dave. And actually, I’d prefer the coal.

Unlike others, I do not want even the vaguest appearance of my opinion, review, or endorsement to have the appearance of impropriety or conflict of interest. Unlike some others who receive free product, I do not whore myself out for favorable comments. And in the instances I have received free product I have said so right up front (once -- a room to report from a tournament, from Mr. Mark Griffin), or refused to do a review. I guess sending me free stuff is a good way to shut me up :-)

When I write that something is good, it’s because that’s what I believe and the reader can have 1000% confidence I haven’t been paid (bought) to say so. Conversely, if you suck -- having paid for your product -- I’ll say that too.

Thanks again Lou.

I agree with you that reviews from people who get stuff for free or are paid to endorse something should be taken with a grain of salt.

With the video excerpts and documentation Bob and I provide on the VEPP website, people can judge the product quality for themselves and don't really need reviews or testimonials from others anyway.

Dave

First, Dr. Dave is a decent guy and the information he puts out is great. I don't always agree with his "tactics" but overall the volume of his work speaks for itself and there is a LOT that people can learn just from what is provided for free on his site.

Where Dave Segal (Spidey) is correct is that Dr. Dave has taken the core information that others charge for and presented it on his website without permission or compensation and completely and deliberately against the wishes of the authors.

So if turnabout is fair play then one could purchase this package and spend the time to diagram the shots on the CueTable, posting them all for free to the www.pool.bz website or here on AZB or both, paraphrase the descriptions, and possibly even provide their own free YouTube vids of the drills being done. The net effect is that in the end the work that Dr. Dave and Bob Jewett put in to compile and present the information would be available for free and every time Dr. Dave would link to his commercial set then someone else would link to the free version and that WOULD mean less sales.

That's the point that Spidey is making.

Along with that I would add that Dr. Dave has not always held himself to be an impartial academic researcher. He has gone out of his way to ridicule others and this has left people with a bad impression. I do not think that Dr. Dave is a bad guy at all and I DO think that he IS an asset to the pool community and an asset to the promotion of pool online. (for one thing having a vast compendium of pool related content for Google and others search engines to index is good for pool)

It's too bad that the situation has deteriorated to the point that there are two "camps" and basically good people are at odds with each other.

I think it's time to let sleeping dogs lie so to speak. Let Dr. Dave do his thing and the Aiming System folks can do theirs. At the end of the day Aiming Systems are being proven to work and accepted by more and more people. It's just a fact of life that no matter what you do there are people who find issue with it. Even Mother Teresa and Ghandi have detractors. People like Hal Houle and Ron Vitello and Gene are always going to have negative people trying to tear them down. And at the end of the day is that such a bad thing?

If the system/method etc... really works then it can withstand the criticism. In fact withstanding the criticism and lowbrow ridicule and outright defamation IS what proves the concept. At the end of the day the people who try to tear it down end up making it stronger.

Dr. Dave knows he has opened the door for his compilations to be diagrammed, repackaged and offered for free. If that happens then it happens and he will probably be ok with it since he does it to others. It probably won't happen because most people are too lazy to do it and most people have their own sense that it isn't "right" to do it. (notice I didn't say illegal).

So let's all just celebrate that there is more pool instruction than ever out there for anyone who wants it. Plenty of paid instruction, plenty of free instruction, plenty of free video, plenty of paid video, it's a good time to be learning to play pool. Someday perhaps all the people who have had issues with each other will have a group hug and agree to work together moving forward. (good luck with that)

No really, there are people on here that I consider to be grade A jerkoffs with little redeeming social qualities, real wastes of carbon, if they disappeared the world would not be any less nice to live in. I find that Dave Segal and Dave Alciatore fit into the categories of folks I would miss if they weren't around.

And that is the end of my brown-nosing spiel. I expect appropriately sized checks in the mail fellas. :-)

Like Spidey, you must be referring to my interpretation and illustration of Stan's CTE approach. If you are referring to something else, please let me know.

I probably should have stayed out of the "aiming system" discussions over all of these years. This is obviously an emotionally charged issue, and it is easy to offend people on all "sides."

I have put a lot of time and effort into creating and continually improving my aiming systems resource page, long before Stan came on the scene with his version of CTE. For the record, I believe my evaluation and analysis of the CTE approach is reasonable, objective, and free from ridicule.

Now, I have been a little harsh at times on the forums concerning some of the "marketing claims" made by some "aiming system" proponents. However, I have also worked hard to expound the benefits and virtues of basic cut-shot aiming systems. I certainly believe "aiming systems" can help many people based on these realistic benefits.

I look forward to the day when the "aiming system" fights are a distant memory. I know ... I'm dreaming.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving,
Dave

In an attempt to steer the thread away from all of the negativity, does anybody have any specific comments, questions, or feedback concerning any of the video clips?

I'm going to sleep now, but I look forward to seeing less negativity tomorrow and through the Holiday season.

Good night,
Dave

you haven't seen negativity even remotely close to what cte/pro1 had to deal with and i would have to say you were a big part of it. What really sucks is, if you weren't worried about making $$$$ off your dvd's it would have been cool to hear your real unbiased opinions about cte/pro1, too bad

I honestly cannot believe all of the negativity in this thread for such a great compilation of work. I can't wait to get this for Christmas. Keep up the great work, Dave!
