New design software WORKS AWESOME, check the pics

Now all I need is a virtual 10' Diamond and a virtual stroke and I'll be good to go.... :grin-square:

3D Cue Design

Very nice work.

The shadowing looks a little too dark for me - but very impressive and very realistic.

Can you take the same cue and change materials for different parts with a click of the mouse?

Well I was bored this morning so I wanted to try my hand at this before I headed in to the office. Mine didn't turn out quite as nice, but I only spent about 30 minutes on it so far. Default camera, lighting and render settings. I'm sure with a little more tinkering I could get it to look at bit more realistic, especially in terms of the grip texture.

Here's what the real one looks like:

Great job cleary! Did you use 3d studio or something else? Having never done this before, was it harder or easier then you thought it would be?

I use Cinema 4d. Its not really hard if you understand how to model in 3d. The texturing/lighting/rendering is the hard part. Making it look somewhat real.

Haven't really done much for years....

very nice.....

I was an avid user of 3ds max and lightwave 3d. I even used truespace when it was in its first iteration. I go back to using 3d studio before it was even max.

One of my friends was a professional, he helped to program lightwave for newtek and did alot of tv and movie work. Where ever you see the titanic moving in the water in the movie titanic,it was my friend who setup the motion for it. Of course to this day, the only part of the titanic that I've watched was my friend's demo reel. lol...

What's funny is that he has a level mapping for the original doom 3d game that is of the newtek bldg. in Canada, repleat with texture maps of photos from the actual bldg itself...

He also did hte original dancing baby for ally mcbeal, but didn't like doing it because he had to use 3dsmax and didn't like to because he said the textures seem rubbery to him. I kind of agree but prefer the interface to lightwave, plus I like that the modeler is integrated rather tahn separate.

I'm soo busy right now...

But if I get a chance, I'll see what I can come up with in the realm of cues...

Was able to make it look at little more realistic. Unfortunately I couldn't go much lower on the thread size for the wrap without getting some weird artifacts. SolidWorks really wasn't designed for rendering. I think I would have to export the geometry to 3D studio and render it there to get a truly realistic look. But this is definitely good enough for me. Thanks for the idea prulhiere.

I know.. I Know... Its just sad..

K that was just for fun. I do like the looks of the 3D software program, I do have a lot of fun with that. Good job guys, those cues look very nice!

What's the polygon count on that object???

I think if you up the polygon count, it will help it to render more realistic, even though it will take longer to render....

The problem is that I'm rendering in SolidWorks.... which is a CAD program I use frequently with work. Everything is vector, so there are no polygons. At some point is does a rasterization and converts the vector geometry to polygonal geometry to be ray traced. I was able to increase the segment size of the ring work, but it seems the helix still has a low number of segments. There might be a seperate setting for that, or it might just be a limitation of the program. I might play around with it this weekend if I find some free time.

Unfortunately the software is not free. It costs about 10K  It's made more for CAD and exact design of parts and components and systems. The rendering feature was just an after thought, but it works pretty good for what it is.

thanks,
i'll have to stick with my etch-a-sketch ;)

i wish i could 3d this
just started on this drawing. no rings yet

Cue Design

Not sure if anyone has spare time but; I am willing to pay $25 if someone can use the 3d software to design a cue for me. I would then be willing to pay $5 each time I want to see a different variant..please shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Kinda funny to think that I am looking for a virtual cue builder.....
