On the superb website, nycgrind.com, you can read an article about Dan Barouty's 14.1 league at Amsterdam Billiards in New York City.

Danny's league, which counts current pro players Steve Lipsky, Jennifer Barretta, and Danny himself among its members, has grown from about 40 players to over 120 in just a few years.

Danny gives a lot of insights into why the league has grown and is doing so well, but his modesty disallows mention of one of the reasons for it's success: Danny inspires, encourages and supports the members of his league and makes them more excited about playing 14.1.

I met Danny over thirty years ago and I count myself among those who've received encouragement and positive feedback from him. I once beat him in the finals of a straight pool league in about 1999, and my parents were present. It remains the only time my mother has ever watched me play pool. In the handicapped match, I beat Danny about 100-160. I was the one who got 100! Danny was not only gracious in defeat but took the trouble to chat with my parents and was generous in the comments he made about me. I've never forgotten that occasion.

Here's to the best ambassador for 14.1 in New York and one of the game's greatest ambassadors in the world. Danny is one of pool's great treasures, and I'm sure glad he lives in my home town of New York City.

If you live in or near New York City, you should seriously consider joining Danny's league. If you do, you will quickly understand why this league is so popular.

Great Article....Thanks Stu !!!

Danny has been pestering me to join the Masters Division on Mondays for quite sometime, but unfortunately my work schedule wont allow it. Hopefully soon enough that changes. from what i hear Danny runs a great league and it keeps growing every season.

Hopefully soon we can all get together !!!

I used to play 14.1 with Danny (Master Billiards and in his Amsterdam Billiards league), until I moved to Dallas.

If it weren't for the cigarette smoke and 8' tables, the Straight Pool league here in Dallas (Volcanoes) wouldn't be too bad. Nothing at all like Danny's NYC league.

Danny has charisma and is a real gentleman. The growing popularity of 14.1 is in many ways related to his selfless dedication to his league.

Thank you to Danny for being a great ambassador to the game (I wish there were more like him)... and also to you Stu for bringing more light to exactly what he does for those of us who do not live in the region.

I have heard a lot about those leagues at Amsterdam. They are huge. It must be quite a job just to administer them. No handicaps either.

Do you know how many different sections he has for players of different levels?

I looked at their website and it says something about 23 Gold Crowns. How many total tables does Amsterdam have.

If the play is only on Monday and Saturday, as it says on the web site, how many matches are played on Monday and Saturday?

Thanks to anyone who has the details of how Danny's league works.

I have never met Danny but he sounds like one "stand up guy". I would like to meet him one day and to visit Amsterdam Billiards. Now that's a real pool room. The players in that League are very lucky to have a guy like Danny and a great place to play.

I think they have 25 tables, twenty three 9 feet and two 7 or 8 feet. One bar box. Not sure how the 14.1 league works, as I play in the beginner team 8 ball league.

It's a great place with something for everyone. Team 8 ball, team 9 ball, individual 9 ball, straight pool and APA eight ball. Leagues are coed.

What about parking? Is there a parking lot for Amsterdam Billiards?

LOL. Many people get culture shock when they come to Manhattan. Basically there is no such thing as free parking as finding an open spot on the street is difficult. You will pay a lot to put your car in a paid parking lot. Public transportation is the way to get around.

Another benefit to playing in the Amsterdam league is you get free pool from 6-9 pm on Friday and Saturday sharing the table with other league players (usually 3-4 people on a table). After 9 PM you can keep the table for $22 for the rest of night until 4 AM closing.

If you call Amsterdam and ask for Danny Barouty, tell him that you regularly wipe the slate with Poolmouse (give 'em my real name), he'll definitely want to play you. :) At your level, you'll give him some good competition.

Two gentlemen playing great straight pool. I wish I could be there.

During his Monday 14.1 league...he has 2 sessions..an early session (6pm) and a later session (8pm). Each session has 6 divisions. His later session includes a masters division which includes-dan barouty, steve lipsky, jim gottier, chris lynch, zion zvi, michael yednak, holden chin, john mccole. Tony Robles and Mika Immonen have been known to pop in during other seasons.

I currently play in the division with Jen Barretta. From my understanding she's not much into straight pool...but from my first time playing her...she could've fooled me. Can't wait til she masters the game...then everyone's gotta watch out.

I recently took a lesson with dan a few weeks ago. Very helpful individual..I enjoyed picking his brain...He watched me run balls from the break shot, helped analyze and improve my patterns, improve my end pattern, and know and understand what type of break shot to use in certain situations given the layout of the last ball and cue ball. Unbelievable knowledge this man has of the game. I even asked to shoot with him, or rather, rack for him any afternoon he has free a couple of racks of 14.1

A great league for anyone who wants to improve their straight pool game. Definitely agree that the best way to get around town and into amsterdam billiards is definitely by mass transportation. It lays right across the street from Nyc's famous Webster Hall.

Thanks for the detailed response. I had almost given up hope that anyone posting knew the answers.

It seemed like a lot of people for not that many tables. I guess you play one match. (In our leagues, we play 2 matches and since they are handicapped, the matches could be each to 150; The two match session sometimes takes 5 hours or longer)

Can you tell me what the six divisions are, and what the players play to and how it all works out in the end.

On another note, that sounds fantastic what Danny was able to do with you and your game. He definitely sounds like the glue that holds that league together.

Muni-meters at 11th and 3rd

Parking (Gee, I hope I'm not giving away my own spot here!) for Amsterdam. Get to the 2 hour muni-meter at 5. For $6 you're good to go!

Save me a spot, huh?

Great post by SJM.......Danny deserves the recognition.

Big Al has listed many of the great players who just might be playing at the next table on any given night. Very exciting for us hackers.

I would add Fran Crimi to the list of current league participants. Fran played on the WPBA (women's pro tour) and, in fact, was a past President of the group. She is really sharpening her 14.1 blade and is kicking some a-- in one of the upper divisions.

Not to mention Dr Michael Fedak who graces us with his presence every mon night...a tremendous supporter to this year's 14.1 world championships..and just all around good guy!
