When and where was that please? Johnnyt
It was actually the 2011 Challenge of Champions at the Mohegan Sun Casino in CT in October. Appleton won the $25K winner take all.
He also just played in the All Japan Championship last month. Think he made it to the quarter finals.
Mika just played in the Kremlin Cup in Russia, aka "the Moscow-ni Cup". 
He lost in the finals to a Greek player.

he's probably doing monotonous drills everyday for hours.
Simply put, he didn't compete enough (and do well enough) in the events that would have qualified him for the European team. Mika was well down the list in about 35th place:

Matchroom made the two wild card picks for each team the guys that finished 4th and 4th on the lists for each squad. They would have been hard pressed to put Mika on the team since he was so far down in the points standings.

Mika Immonen is in the MOscow and he plays Kremlin open. He beat Ivica Putnik from Croatia in 1/4 finals
