This is the first report from The Andy Grubbs Memorial at Starcade in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Please bear in mind that JoeyA is trying to phone an occasional update to me and I'm trying to pass it on. My shorthand ain't the best, my hearing is worse. Accuracy of these reports ain't likely to be 100%! Apologies to those whose names I maul.

The basics: $1500 added, $50 entry fee with no greens fee, nothing taken out of it, 100% to the purse. According to my cyphering with 104 players that sounds like a $6700 purse. Probably due to a narrow minded attitude by Florida lawmakers, no calcutta for this event. A relief for JoeyA, there is some rumor that Dirty Bob likes to jack up the price on Joey just to make him squirm!

A rundown of some of the players there:

JoeyA of course!
Justin Hall
Scotty Townsend
Tommy Kennedy
Cliff Joiner
Doc Hutch
Jose Hilliard (Josh of course, I know that. Apparently my fingers didn't!)
Wayne Broussard(?) Think it was Broussard, writing fast I missed his last name.
David Walters
Bobby Jones
Stoney Stone
Dwayne Bourgouis
Jimmy Fox (probably Denny Fox, I wrote down Jimmy but see above disclaimer!)
Jim Jennings
Dave Grossman
Tracy Majors(Hines) the only lady in the event I believe
Mitch Yarborough
Jerry Brock
James Roberts

Also some stout little known players in there including Johnny Archer and Shawn Putnum. Players from at least four or five states have shown up so it looks like an interesting field. More AZB'ers there too but Joey just reeled off a few names from memory or looking around the room.

Unusual that there is no food report from JoeyA but it is early yet, play hasn't started. He did note theater style chairs for spectators to sit in, the nice plush variety.

Cue builder Bobby Jones is there. Don't know if he has set up shop or playing in the event, maybe both.

Live streaming isn't working out at the moment but they do intend to have some matches on the internet by tomorrow, delayed view. Try the addresses poolhalltv.com and jamespoolhalltv.com I will try to confirm a website when next I talk to Joey, if it happens. Never know how trip reports will work out with someone playing in the event too.

Wow. 100% purse distribution? Who stuck their neck out for the pool player? And when did we start doing stuff like this?

BTW...how do I execute box erasing?

Glad to see Bobby Jones in the lineup. He's been making this event since 1992. One of Gulfport Mississippi finest. Good friend, great cue builder and knows his way around a table.

Good luck, Bobby

Hu, thanks for the tourney info, sounds like a good one, keep us all updated if you can, hopefully JoeyA will make a good showing!

thx for the update...I think it's Denny Fox...Not Jimmy...Denny is a regular on that end....unless there is a new one named jimmy that i don't know...sounds like they had a good turn out & a strong field.

Jerry Brock

Haven't seen that name in years. Used to play jam up.

still hitting them pretty good

Joey happened to mention that Jerry is still hitting them pretty good.

No new word from Joey. I only expect one or two calls a day from him at most. He is there to play pool and do a little socializing.

Starcade Billiards

I used to be in the area back in mid 90's and played a couple of times.

Andy Grubb was a GREAT guy and partner. His partner was pretty cool but Andy was the pool guy.

Partner's wife (Barbara) graduated from anchorage high school - where i am from.

Glad to see event still going on.

I remember onetime back in 1976 in Hot Springs, Arkansas there was a big 9-Ball tournament being held at the "Velda Rose Hotel" on the 9 footers, all the big name players from the day were in attendance.

Buddy,Sigel, Louie,Ambrose,Gumphrey, Steve Cook, & Jerry Brock just to name a few.

Well after hours one night Brock & Sigle had a match down the street at a locale bar on the 7 footer, I wanted to watch it badly but had to sneak in the door while the doorman wasn't looking to get in cause I was only 17yrs. at the time.

Well I got in and Sigle & Brock kicked off a set for $500, they hit um around alittle then Brock ran a five pack and Sigle came back with a smooth five pack back, man that was some great shooting!

About that time the doorman spotted me and politely escorted me out the front door by my shirt collar!...hehe:smile:

I didn't care by that time cause I got to watch the big boys battle for awhile anyway.

Jerry Brock at one time was a most feared player on the bar box for sure.

That does sound like it was a sight to see. Different game but I still love short track pool too. Heck, I even love the mud ball.

I had to laugh about you having trouble sneaking in a place at seventeen. As my avatar indicates, I'm a pretty hairy kind of guy. I had a beard in my first driver's license picture taken a few days after I turned fifteen. I was a well known regular in a lot of places my older friends couldn't get in. Really annoyed them.

Sorry about not providing any updates on the event.

It was a great event!

DocHutch and I left shortly after I lost my last match the a Chad "somebody" from Georgia. He beat me 9-7 when I dogged the nine to even it up at hill-hill.

Jerry Brock spanked me but I gave him a scare.

We at well.
The hotel Mariott Fairfield Inn had an AWESOME continental breakfast.
When we finished playing our Saturday matches at 5:30 am this morning, we made it back to the hotel just in time to eat before going to sleep for 2 1/2 hours. I had a match scheduled for 11:00 am this morning and came in a little early to warm up. Glad I did, because at least I won my first match.

DocHutch enjoyed himself and got in some hits on some of the better players.

I didn't do as well as I hoped I would do and can only say that I continue to learn things, playing better players and my expectation for myself grow with each tournament I compete in.

I met Gator Joe from AZB at Starcade. Thanks for the howdy Gator Joe!

Lots of other spectators and new players there. There's a whole new crop of top players out there, swinging it.

This event was STOCKED with talent and a great event put on by Barbara Workman.

Lots of good food, although it could be slow getting it to you because there was such a crowd.

Johnny Archer and Shawn Putname put on a clinic and were still on the winner's side when DocHutch and I left town. Just got in a little while ago and thought I would update the thread as best I can.

The event is kind of brutal time wise but I enjoyed it and will play in it again in the future.

Now I plan to focus on the Louisiana State Bar Table Championship coming up next weekend in Thibodaux, LA at CueSports.

Thanks Joey for the update on your pool trip, sounds like you and Doc Hutch had a wonderful time, Like you say pool is a never ending learning experience!

Thanks for the catch on Josh's name. He is a familiar fellow on the tournament trail, I know his name well. Apparently my fingers didn't at the moment and I missed it proof reading names. Had to laugh though, Jose Hilliard does sound funny!

Joey,

Sounds like you did OK, last match at 5:30AM is brutal! Takes more than a few hours sleep to recover from that.

I appreciate it very much. Good thing I was not there! He, he, he! I had to laugh myself on that note, Hu. Thanks again. And Thanks to JoeyA as well.
Many Regards,
Lock n Load.

Johnny Archer put Shawn Putnam in the loser bracket to face Tommy Kennedy. Tommy defeated Shawn to set up a Archer vs Kennedy final. Johnny Archer won I think the final score was 12-8. What a tournement and what a tough field of players showed.

Karma likes JoeyA

What was extraordinary was the fact that after sleeping for a mere 3 hours and waking up to do the same thing all over again, my first match of the day was probably the best match I have ever played in my entire life.

I don't really understand it but it was a wonderful experience. In my mind, I want to remember never missing any balls, but the look on my opponent's face every time I accidentally hooked him time after time said othewise. :embarrassed2: Actually I had another match where my opponent never received any rolls and I received them all. I guess Karma has fallen in love with JoeyA again. :D

While napping in my car between matches, I would REGULARLY see other players taking breaks outside of the pool room to recharge their batteries. Some of the BEST players in the world were seen leaving the pool room between matches. I guess, I am finally "getting some it".

Chad played "royally" from everything I saw. I dogged it against him but played well too. He deserved the win and I did not.
