Tweaking a shaft to "match" the butt

Is it possible to tune up shafts to match the butt? I have a matched set of Runde shafts that make the cue nose heavy. Both are full 13mm, 4.3oz with lots of meat in the bottom half of the shafts. I was hoping to get some fat trimmed off the shafts, maintain stiffness if not stiffer than they already are, and hopefully pull the balance point a bit. I have another shaft that has the attributes I like, but is 12.4. Is this possible and still maintain the 13mm?

Forget about cutting wood off of a shaft & making it stiffer. I am guessing that your Q has a steel joint that weighs a full oz. That is probably where most of the nose heavy feeling is comming from. Put the Q together & balance it on the side of your finger. Measure that point from the end of the BUTT CAP. That is your balance point. Find a Q that feels right for you & measure that balance point. Now look for a new Q, with that balance & move on...JER

Probably not. Not enough to make a difference, anyway. You'd have to remove a LOT of material to lose enough weight for a change in balance. Probably best leaving them alone & having a shaft made at a lighter weight.

If you are worried about the feel of the balance of the cue, could you just put a heavier weight bolt in the butt to shift it away from feeling nose heavy? Obviously, the entire cue would be heavier, but if you can get the balance to feel better for you then you might not even notice the extra weight.

Definitely worth a try

I had one cue that I made that came out nose heavy, but was already at the total weight that I prefer (19.0 oz.). I added a weight bolt that put the total weight to just over 20 oz. in order to get the balance point where I wanted it. I was amazed that I did not really notice the extra weight once I got the balance right.

I believe a balanced cue and to some extent, a forward balanced cue feels lighter to the player than a butt heavy cue.

I made a balanced 21 oz cue for a guy and cored it with PH to get the weight with out adding any metal. He said the cue was too light. I picked up his old cue and I swear that it had at least 3 oz of something in the butt to make it 21 oz.

After he played with the new cue for a week or 2 he liked it.

Another idea would be to change out the joint to something lighter. Best idea would be to switch to an ivory joint while keeping both matched shafts stock and untouched. By doing this, it would not take you that long to re-adjust to the new hit because you would be using the same shafts that you have been playing with and are used to. As long as you don't break with this stick, it should be fine to use a capped ivory joint without an insert under it for added strength. This is an easy fix and you wouldn't have to touch the centerpin. It also adds value to your stick if you were ever to get rid of it. This would take the "nose heavy feel" out of your stroke. This is a repair that I have done to many times to count and have not had a problem with yet. It should be easy to find a GOOD cue maker in whatever area you live in or any Major tournament. Hope this helps. Good luck
