Leon is about to start building a cue for me. I was wondering what everyone opinions are on his Ivory over steel jointed cues. I was originally just going to go with a juma joint. But I am very curious about how his Ivory over steel joints play.

I would think this type of joint plays like a piloted stainless steel joint with the look of an Ivory joint. Other than weight I wouldn't see why you wouldn't go with a piloted Ivory joint.

trust the cuemaker
he will have reasons of his own - for the joint combination. Ivory,Micarta and SS all work good together. Some cuemakers use only 1 or 2 joints- nowadays the cuemaker is expected to do all- Hopefully you picked out a brazilian rosewood Front to match. mark you will like it! Leon and I have talked of these things for a few months now!!

If you're building a true compression fit piloted joint, you need steel or another metal inside to prevent splitting and wear. If not really compression fitted, the ivory is fine.
i have had several piloted ivory joints
i personaly liked everyone i had
i had gus,barry and george but i don't know if they were pressure fitted
i never had one break
i have heard of the steel ivory combo,i think bob owen made the one i saw
i liked it too
but i really couldn't say what effect they have on play

Yes it is .. The stainless is taken down some and threaded , a threaded piece of ivory is made to screw down on to it

IMO it does have a different hit to it
A stainless joint has a certain weight and a hit
A ivory over stainless has less weight and a different more desired hit to me
A ivory joint has less weight of the two and has its own distinct hit I love ivory too
I don't believe I would say it has a blended hit of both I'd say it is it own style
so is it only for show????

I just hit with a kick ass Mike Webb cue tonight that was ivory sleeved over stainless and it was amazing. Bill Stroud posted a while back about how he had the lowest percentage of cracked ivory joints when he sleeved them. Even if it was sleeved, I could hear the ponk of the ivory. On the other hand, I made a solid juma jointed cue and it hit so good I kept it, so in the end, its totally up to the op.

i must have drawn my ball,so i called tim scruggs and told him to make me one
i mighta even said they were the best,or the going thing or something of like
he made it,i bought it,i missed a shot for the money and sold the cue
i could not tell the difference
tim and mike enjoyed laughing at me for years
since then,i avoid excessive claims,but i can't tell the difference in steel,ivory or half each
i don't know how you could tell
