Apprenticeship

It has always been a goal of mine to make a living doing something related to pool. Although I have made some extra money doing instructional videos and lessons it just isn't anything that is sustainable.

I have been mulling whether or not being a table mechanic would be a pursuit that would be realistic. In the Houston area there are only two mechanics that I know of outside of the guys from the billiards factory.

I would like to learn how to be more than a felt jockey. Is there anyone in the greater Houston area that would be interested in taking on an apprentice? I would like to learn the trade.

I'm in houston right now actually.... but going to be headed back to DFW to do some tables before getting on the road again. The weird thing about this job is that for most people you don't choose this job, it chooses you. I never set out to do what I do, I was supposed to be a veterinarian! lol But, once you get into it, find the right ways to do things, stop taking shortcuts and show some pride and customer service ( being a player doesn't hurt) suddenly you are craving another table to do. looking for the challenging ones to fix. And never being completely satisfied with your work, running long hours, breaking a nail, and figuring out what jobs to take and what ones to pass- and above all...never compromise yourself or the standard you work to get. Somedays are going to be better than others, but if at the end of the day you still want to go play a few racks, then maybe you're headed in the right direction. Texas is in severe need of tables done by people that understand a table and how to fix things as they come along, not just try to spackle over the mistakes and collect a check. It doesn't matter how much someone advertises, if they can't do the job right, someone else will be getting the call from now on, and it will probably be a word of mouth referral. Give me a call- I'll either talk you into it, or talk you out of it, but I will be honest either way. I'll be at Big Tymes tonight and Bogies later on tonight. I hear a 1 pocket game calling from here......

I'm a veterinarian, but often times wish I was a table mechanic. Too late now. Neither of us get paid enough ....

Man I have all the respect in the world for solid table mechanics. I have helped on a few jobs here and there as grunt labor and that job is not an easy day out. I can certainly see the allure of it for a guy with the right drive and a strong independent streak.

Do yourself, and all future clients, a huge favor, and try to learn only proper and mechanically sound techniques, from the beginning.

Ask "why" for everything that you are told or taught.

The world does need more good mechanics, but not more knuckleheads.

Kind of the point of the thread "apprenticeship". Research is what I do when I don't know what I am doing.

WELL SAID SIR. I WOULD REPLACE MY CURRENT TABLE FOR A USED 9FT GC OR DIAMOND TODAY IF THERE WAS A PRO IN THE MLPS ST PAUL AREA ...
