Don't like my opponents wearing headphones!

My old college roommate would wear a Walkman nearly 24/7 and we would play a lot. It is hard playing a social game with someone that cannot respond to you. He was a really good player too and we had some great matches, but I hated to play him.

I started wearing headphones when pool rooms decided that I had to listen to the house man's taste in loud music, or even worse, those that installed a juke box. If someone is going to try to force their taste in music on me, I might as well just listen to my own.

Okay, let me clarify my earlier thoughts.

I don't have a problem with headphones used by someone practicing, or by someone who is playing someone else that doesn't mind their opponents wearing them.

I just don't want my opponents wearing them.

And please shake my hand whether you beat me or lose to me.

When I actually play, ie not practice play, I really have no interest in socializing with you.... I don't care to hear your banter or anything else for that matter... I am and always will be playing the table... I am pretty sure the table doesn't care if I wear my headphones and since it's my opponent I see no merit in some of these opinions...

Most every room has a jukebox or a looped soundtrack they play... I prefer my own music.. If they disallow headphones I will be wearing the flesh colored ear plugs for the same reasons....

This is in no way a show of lack of respect for the other player but an attempt on my part to play my best pol by eliminating or turning down the volume of distractions....

IF the room is old school and quiet and you are one of the few who can manage to keep quiet when it's not your turn I would likely need neither the headphones or earplugs and would leave them in my case....

When's the last time one of you walked into a room that was as quiet as a church?? Heck they even played crappy music in the tourney room at DCC on several of the days......

I learned in a room with blaring music and in my younger days I could fade it..... Not so much today... If you still can fade it, great for you.. my headphones and earplugs are just evening up the playing field.....

I love wearing headphones while I practice at home, but feel
They are totally innapropriate for use in a match against someone else. I think it really lacks class for someone to play against another person wearing their headphones.

Pool is a social thing for most people. We need to talk during our game. Nice cue, who made it? Been catching any fish? Is that your new girlfriend? Introduce us.

Do you talk to your opponent like this in tournaments?

If so, this is probably why they wear headphones...

I think they are rude! I understand some people may say I can't be distracted, I focus better, I need my music, whatever!! I put them in the same boat as someone who is constantly on the phone. Talking on the phone while having dinner with someone? Jabbering with my friends is more important than dinner with you! Rude. Pool is a social thing for most people. We need to talk during our game. Nice cue, who made it? Been catching any fish? Is that your new girlfriend? Introduce us. I take a few poolshooting buddies fishing on my brothers ponds. If they wore headphones they would never fish with me again. Many world problems are solved because we communicate while fishing! Also how can I get in your head while you wear those damm headphones? Your in my head cause you wear them! I have to run my game and help you run yours too?

League play is "social" and that's why some of us hate it. Pool played seriously is NOT a social game.

I have no problem with headphones. I don't wear them hardly ever, playing pool or not. I prefer to be able to hear my surroundings and maintain a level of situational awareness. If someone pulled out a gun and started firing, I'd be the one hitting the deck while the guy with headphones becomes the target.

Like already stated by others, I don't think the headphones had anything to do with your opponent trying to sneak a foul by you. He probably would have done it regardless.

Talk.

No, certainly if I don't know you. The more serious the game the less I talk. Just funnin a little. And I really don't try and get in someones head either. I really do have some ponds though!

Same here. I'm all for an introduction at the beginning of the game and a "good game" handshake at the end but in between, I have absolutely no interest in talking. My full attention is on the table.

There's been a couple of times where I've been playing at a bar and a girl will send her friend to tell me that she thinks I'm cute. I tell her to tell her friend I'll be over when I'm done playing. My full attention is on the table and the game. Not my opponent, and not some girl that I know will be there when I'm finished.

Wow! Never seen that one before!

I wouldn't be happy about that either. These are very good reasons for not allowing headphones. I have considered wearing them myself before but I wont now.

Another thing to watch out for is sometimes they are not listening to music, I have caught one before getting coached via the headphones. The headphones were plugged into his cell phone and there was a guy watching his game and telling him what ball to shoot next and how to shoot it.

It took me awhile to catch on to what this guy was doing but I knew for sure once I stood in his line of site of the table and the coach moved to get a better look. The player stalled waiting for instructions and I moved again to block his view. When the coached moved again I called him out.
It's pretty sad when someone has to do this to get an edge.

Ain't that sumthin......for that reason alone right there..it should be a rule...No Communication Devices in tournaments! next thing you know they will have phones that look like mp3 players.

These are the sounds of silence

I'm getting more and more like my parents everyday that goes by. I'm "old school". I'm having growing pains. It's hard for me to change with the times. I don't like people wearing headphones when I'm playing them. I don't like people NOT sitting in their chair when I'm at the table. I don't like all this loud, outward display of emotion when somebody wins a match that has been the trend for 10 or 12 years now. I just like the nice, "old days" style of pool that I grew up on. A relaxed atmosphere. A quiet "gentlemens" game with nothing heard but the clacking of the balls and the occasional rack being put onto the table.

Oh, those days have long passed me by :(!!!

O.k stop it already...your giving me goosebumps...ya they were the good old days...I always wanted an alarm clock that sounded like a wooden rack racken' em' up to wake up to every morning.

Nice post

I fully agree.....pool is a social game, even in competition. Balls need to be declared frozen, players need to be told to shoot again after push outs, they need to be told their on two fouls, asked to wait because I want a call on this next shot. if they are shooting in the opposite direction why should I have to jump up and run in front of them and do jumping jacks to tell them I want a ref before they get down and one stroke a shot. Ridiculous, disrespectful to opponent, spectators and our "old" game that is not a computer game, not a pinball machine, nor a jukebox..this is Ames Mister!!!! Just shoot pool!

Thanks for clarification

Er.........there's not a single word in any of the posts thus far that even implies that anyone has lost ANY games of pool over the use of headphones .

But, by all means go ahead and rep the OP anyway. Everybody can use a little green rep every now and then !!!

I didn't lose the match, yes they ran out after double hitting whitey but unfortunately for them it was rotating breaks....that's where their playlist ended............

I Use headphones and LOVE THEM .... I have a few certrain guys at our local room that constantly love to talk about how i suck and cant play even while they sit on the sidelines and never play a single tourny that guys from out of town come to..( Oh by the way im not allowed to play in the local tournys , even the handicapped ones)

So i use them basically to drowned out the rail birds and naggers .

Oh and i can hear the balls hit jsut fine using my Ipod Shuffle with the original headphones that came with it. The balls actually make the sound like im watching it on TV lol.

Anyhow just my thoughts attack all you want.

I dont wear headphones, but i do have a pair of ear plugs in my case. I'm not a fan of over loud music and the people that scream over said music...lol.
