Cue Lathe

I've had mixed stories about which cue lathe to buy. I've heard that the HighTower lathe is ok but you really have to play with it to get the runout correct, Then theres Bassel, and I've heard the same things about it not always the most accurate. The Proper I've heard to be a really good one but it has been banned from being sold here in Lincoln Nebraska by Rory Mueller of Mueller Sporting goods, he doesnt want the competition with his company.
I've talked a little to Bassel hes telling me 4-8 weeks, Hightower is saying 4-6 weeks, and I'm not able to get a Proper lathe. So what is the better of the lathes that will allow you to do the most out of the box and be the most accurate.
I gotten so many different stories I would like to have everyone that is willing to contribute to the forum help me out.

Hi Randy
There is only one answer that I believe in and tell people, Every machine has a purpose, But every machine has a learning curve in which, it is your responsibility to learn it's strength's and weaknesses to make it your own.
 
Over the years I owned the first Porper B lathe, a few HighTowers an Enco and a loota Bloodworth equipment.

On Lathes I plan ahead to bring the headstock and tailstock as dead nuts as I can. I then tighten and bore the headstock with the tailstock.

It matters not who you get the equipment from you need to tweak it.

On not being able to buy a Porper something is wrong with that. Porper has a web site with a published price. It would be restriction of trade not to sell you.
 
I don't believe for a minute that Porper will not sell you a model B and ship it to you in nebraska. That makes no sense, at all.

Unless he is Putin's brother-in-law, I have a very hard time believing this could be true. But so what? Use the old NFL local TV black-out trick.

Find out how close to your home Joe is allowed to sell one - and have it shipped there.

The scroll chuck used on the Hightower lathe and Bassel's lathe has a run out of 1 to 2 thou. You can minimize that if you know how. Just how exact do you think a cue is anyway???

There are several thousand people with Hightower lathes. They work just fine. I know mine does. Get one .... you will like it.



Can you really get a Hightower lathe in 4 to 6 weeks. Business must be bad... lol I waited 3 months.

Actually, that is true. Joe sold 100% of his interests in most (if not all) of his billiard product line to Meuller and has no capacity to sell any of it independent of Meuller.

Nope Joe sold all his right to Mueller.
 
When I look at a shot on the table I never think (or try not to) how many ways I can miss, I do that, I miss.

Such is life. There are always reasons you "can't"". Putting those thoughts in your head, you will never. Wasted energy.

If you want to get ahead you find the ways "You Can". Lifes like a big lock, you can be the key or waste your time behind a locked door forever.
