I have read and contributed to some of these threads myself, but it still amazes me that not only can I not find pool on television, but after channel surfing before breakfast I saw a show with two men in camouflage preparing to shoot a turkey. The show is called 100% Real Hunting TV.

Oh billiards, how I weep for thee...:shakehead:

And it's all a set up.Same with fishing shows. Both make me sleepy.

How many sponsors did that hunting show have?

The good about pool is that it doesn't require nearly as many gadgets as hunting, fishing, or golf. The bad news is that it doesn't have nearly as many gadgets to advertise.

Maybe Earl is onto something and can save pool.

You would think in this day of satellite TV, there would be a billiards channel that you could add for a few bucks a month?
They have everything else!

Pool is screwed because no one buys anything and 95% dont want to buy anything. The hard core players want to make money not spend money. Hunting and fishing are totally different. You dont hear about a dude who just spent $8000 on a hunt b!tching because he didnt make the money or a dude who bought a $30,000 bass boat complain because there wasnt enough added money in the $50 entry fee tournament.

Its two completely different demographics. One of them companies spend all kinds of money to market to the other one is pool. No it wont get any better.

I am only throwing this out there but the APA (according to their website) currently has around 260,000 members worldwide.
There are roughly 1,000,000 hunting licenses sold each year in my home stare of PA alone. So the state of PA has almost 4x the amount of hunters than the APA has members in the world. I'd love to see more pool on tv but actual numbers of viewers are what keeps the tv stations in business and the numbers of pool players just aren't there the way they are in other sports.

Those TV shows do not air because networks put them on. They air on paid for time by the producers. They are no different than an infomercial. Someone could do a Sunday morning pool show if they could pay for the time. The industry support in the shooting and fishing sports is light years ahead of what is possible and available in pool.

When you see that mile long list of sponsors at the end of each hunting and fishing show that is who is paying the bill for the production and air time through their sponsorship of the program. It doesnt matter if 100 people watch that show will stay on the air as long as the sponsor pays the freight. ESPN might do different deals depending on the production but for the most part thats how it works.

You are correct though that it all goes back to numbers. All one million of those PA hunters buy shit every deer season. Those companies want them to buy their stuff and spend money to get in front of them.

Wait ... hold the phone ... you mean to tell me I'm not going to get rich playing pool??

(cartman) Screw you guys ... I'm goin' golfin' (/cartman)

Sponsors do not have to be pool related. Look at Nascar. Tide, Viagra, and everything else under the sun.

Fast cars lead to hot women, which leads to cleaning your sheets.

I'm pretty sure it's all related.

Great point!

Yes, pool players, proprietors and promoters need a little imagination and the willingness to put in the time to find sponsors. Shoes, glasses, Icy Hot, restaurants, small volume cue makers, cars, bicycles, etc.
The total number of folks who play in weekly pool leagues is around 600,000 (APA, VNEA, BCA, ACS, TAP, etc.), the number who don't play league but play in weekly tournaments may be similar. The number who play occasionally is large as well. I think many more would be playing if there were more smoke-free venues, and proprietors in general did more to please customers.

Yeah, golfers buy a lotta balls and change their clubs often..and many
other sports have a 're-buy' factor every year.

My favorite Joss is 44 years old, been refinished twice, and I buy a tip
once in a while...:embarrassed2:..not much sales action here.

That is why I think you, Justin, and Mark and everyone associated with
TAR is on the right track.
With pool, the attraction is action.

Forget about dumbing down the game and cleaning up the image and
making 'short games' like 9-ball and 10-ball the main vehicles for getting
sponsorship.
Pool hustlers and betting big cash is what brought attention to this game
when I was a kid.

I feel the poker model is the route to go.

Don't forget....TAR stands for *THE ACTION REPORT*

Hey PT109,
There was pool on ESPN last week end, I watched it. But it was women playing. They were dressed nice too, no smoking, no short pants, no loudness, no fussing, no cussing, no humbugging, just plain being nice to each other.

Hey Double HemLock,
Do you remember when you were a young guy, if you went to the pool hall all the guys were were dressed nice? Some even had suit and ties on. On the other hand now you go to a pool hall and they have on tank tops, flip flops and no shoes, tee shirts, short pants. And a number of other things. And think that it is nice to be out in the pool hall dressed like that! Where is the good image? Do you think a company wants that on TV? Even the women are out in the pool hall with flip flops on! But on TV they wear shoes.
When I look at the live stream I see the same thing, no dress code! PT, I just wondered if this may be the reason we do not see any men pool on TV any more!!! I am not trying to step on anyone toes either, just calling it like I see it.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

I don't see any sponsors for dancing shoes on "Dancing with the Stars".
I'll be that most people that watch it don't even dance?

I'm with you on a reasonable dress code, Lock.
..as long as it is 'dress for the game'....like golfers do.
'Tux and tie' do not allow you to play your best game.
But dressing like you just robbed a convenience store is no good for
YOUR game or THE GAME.

regards...to the CEO of the Lock society...
...and for anyone trying to shoot their way out of a trap as well:smile:

Double HemLock,
Thanks for the regards. I like that. Do you ever see the golfers dressed in a tank top and flip flops? How are you doing today, double hemlock? Good to hear from you. I need your help on picking out a new ID format for the Lock Society members! PM me what you like for the format! Thanks.

An example of that is a member of a team that I am on. Another player on our team bought a low deflection shaft. Payed around $150. The other member looked at him and said that is a waste of money saying that you would have to win that much in a tournament to justify buying it and it is tough to do.

But the same person will go to the local casino a few times a week and blow hundreds and brag about his casino reward card status.
