Short answer........NO.
I always try to play my best. I'm sure it costs me money!
Do you often give up a lot of weight?
I did once by accident…kind of. I just moved to a new city and had seen this guy play for money, although he didn’t see me. I just watched for a bit then asked a couple guys about him. He liked to gamble I found out and knew I could give him at least the 7-ball & he lived in a different city, but not too far away. But definitely someone I wanted to play in the future. Our paths had not crossed in about 2 years until…
I very rarely played on a Friday/Saturday night in the pool room in our town. Besides being married, it was way too loud & busy for me. My wife was busy w/work one Friday night so I stopped by the room. I saw a guy who I knew who was not a very good player but we liked each other so we played for the time. So to make it fun for me and not to embarrass my friend, I was banging all the balls trying to bank 2/3 rails and fly the 9 when ever possible. He still had no chance but it made it very fun & in no way was I trying to hustle him, he knew how I played. The set was over & I went to the bathroom. While I was at the urinal, the guy I had seen 2 years ago that like to gamble chased me in the bathroom and asked if I wanted to play for $50 sets. I had no idea he was even there, but he watched the whole set w/my friend.
I was so excited I almost peed on the wall! But my problem was he was expecting me to play like I played against my friend – real banger stuff. So I played the same way when we played so as not to scare him off. We went back & forth, I ended up winning like $50 + his Meucci (he owed me $60) & agreed to play for $500/$1,000 on Sunday. I could hardly sleep the weekend, I couldn’t believe my luck. Well, even though he lowered the bet to $150/set when we met SundayI continued playing the same way & actually lost the 1st set & was down the 2nd for $200. I decided I can still play the same but started playing safe near the end of the games. I won the 2nd set for $200 & ended up winning around $700 that day. We played many times after that - I ended up winning over $3,000 total. All this because I was having fun w/a friend & was being watched – I still can’t believe he chased me in the bathroom, I still smile about that from time to time.
Sorry if this is too long.
Dave
Sorry Dave, it's a great story, but I was very disappointed to hear that you smile when thinking about some guy chasing you into the bathroom.

It depends on your level of play. In most cases you are not playing a sucker but a "Want to be" hustler. The guy you entice into coming over and asking you to play because he thinks you are a sucker. Not exactly an innocent party. Once you have him stuck you keep him chasing his money with regulating your play.Am I the only one who does it the other way 'round? I tell people to save their money when I know they'll lose. I write-off winnings and lose on purpose, so we all go home happy. (of course, I don't gamble where there's a possibility of actually losing).
What IS it with pool players and the need to get one over on someone? :frown:
Greed? Instant gratification? Ego? Perhaps, but a lack of class is as good an explanation as any.
That is what giving weight is for, so you can play your best and have a pool of players to play with. This is especially true when you play at your home pool room. You want to walk in any time and have a bunch of guys you can play with. Of course this is all moot if you are just playing for fun all the time.Actually, I'm kind of stupid!
Last night I ran out 3 of the first 5 racks at the bar.
I didn't make a dime. Nobody would play me for money afterward. :frown:
