For the big bucks, by letting him win a small match or two? I would love to hear your stories on this subject! Thanks.

Not for big money but my son in law was stunned after we moved from a quarter table to a 9 footer. I was pretty sure of myself, his stick has a flaming skull on it, I was using a house cue.

Does this count?

Early eighties, a guy that I had been "farming" for months wanted to play for higher stakes one night. When he was broke early in the evening I would lose a few small bets with him to get him started for the evening. One or two nights a week when he was having a pretty good night I would relieve him of most of his profit later in the night.

One night he got to wondering what it was like to play for high stakes and I had a sales agreement on my commercial real estate. We played one game of barbox eight ball for $80,000. I played a wee bit better than I did most early evenings. We had both known we would be waiting a few weeks on our money. He was a wholesale and retail distributer of recreational pharmaceuticals and made a monster deal once every six months when he got some money from somewhere else. Unfortunately the fed's got a little too interested in him before the next big deal which was about six weeks away so I was air barreled for $80,000 too!

Steve if you read this I'm still holding your marker. ;)

I once got involved in a sort of set up. I had a friend who went to a place now and then where the owner played. This was an out of the way place where no one but a local would have ever gone and the owner was the best player in the place. The set up was, I went in and played my friend for a few hours and beat him for a few hundred playing pretty good. We made a date to play the following week with me offering him some weight. Everybody in the place was watching us play and probably had an opinion of my game. After I left he laid down a story of how much he had seen me go off for in the past. The following week I came back but of course my friend was not there.

Needless to say it didn't take long before the owner is over trying to make a game with me asking for weight and so on. Long story short we play even and some time later on I did end up giving him weight. That was all I wanted to do. We knew he would be gun shy of a stranger and I wanted a way to get him on the table. He could play and I was not even sure I could beat him in the first place but he would go off and was well worth playing, if you could get him to the table. Over the next few months I beat him for 5 to 7 thousand dollars and sometimes it was a very tough game but I had the edge and it showed up. Every time we played the place was packed to watch the game and I have a feeling he made back over the bar everything he lost to me with the extra business. In the end he was losing every time though and his wife didn't want him to play me anymore, actually getting into a big fight right there in the bar. That was it and I never went back. It was a 100 drive and I was tired of going there anyway.

Not sure if this is 100% a bait, but I played a guy for $20, race to 7 in 9-ball. Over and over and over, for months. I wasn't PLAYING playing, you know, but it would go back and forth (mostly me winning), until he came in flush and wanted to play for $100 a set. Then $200. Then $500. It was a nice night, and I never saw him again until about 6 months later.

He came back and wanted to only play straight pool, and only to 50 balls. That was ALL he'd play. He'd improved, but he'd also picked up some very bad sharking habits. The first and last time I played him, he put on "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" on the juke box, 8 times in a row. He would be singing and dancing while I was playing, standing by the table, chalking up, etc... Telling him to stop didn't work. He won that game, but he'd turned into a severe asshole, so I just walked away from him.

All of these stories are very good, and right to the point! Nice going guys. Thanks.

Have I ever baited anyone? This is pool we're talking about right? Baiting/hustling/and the con are 75% why I did it. Johnnyt

I did once by accident…kind of ;). I just moved to a new city and had seen this guy play for money, although he didn’t see me. I just watched for a bit then asked a couple guys about him. He liked to gamble I found out and knew I could give him at least the 7-ball & he lived in a different city, but not too far away. But definitely someone I wanted to play in the future. Our paths had not crossed in about 2 years until…

I very rarely played on a Friday/Saturday night in the pool room in our town. Besides being married, it was way too loud & busy for me. My wife was busy w/work one Friday night so I stopped by the room. I saw a guy who I knew who was not a very good player but we liked each other so we played for the time. So to make it fun for me and not to embarrass my friend, I was banging all the balls trying to bank 2/3 rails and fly the 9 when ever possible. He still had no chance but it made it very fun & in no way was I trying to hustle him, he knew how I played. The set was over & I went to the bathroom. While I was at the urinal, the guy I had seen 2 years ago that like to gamble chased me in the bathroom and asked if I wanted to play for $50 sets. I had no idea he was even there, but he watched the whole set w/my friend.

I was so excited I almost peed on the wall! But my problem was he was expecting me to play like I played against my friend – real banger stuff. So I played the same way when we played so as not to scare him off. We went back & forth, I ended up winning like $50 + his Meucci (he owed me $60) & agreed to play for $500/$1,000 on Sunday. I could hardly sleep the weekend, I couldn’t believe my luck. Well, even though he lowered the bet to $150/set when we met Sunday :( I continued playing the same way & actually lost the 1st set & was down the 2nd for $200. I decided I can still play the same but started playing safe near the end of the games. I won the 2nd set for $200 & ended up winning around $700 that day. We played many times after that - I ended up winning over $3,000 total. All this because I was having fun w/a friend & was being watched – I still can’t believe he chased me in the bathroom, I still smile about that from time to time.

Sorry if this is too long.

Actually, I'm kind of stupid!
Last night I ran out 3 of the first 5 racks at the bar.
I didn't make a dime. Nobody would play me for money afterward. :frown:

Sorry Dave, it's a great story, but I was very disappointed to hear that you smile when thinking about some guy chasing you into the bathroom. :-P

Good point, maybe I should edit that. Naaaa, it is still amusing.

Am I the only one who does it the other way 'round? I tell people to save their money when I know they'll lose. I write-off winnings and lose on purpose, so we all go home happy. (of course, I don't gamble where there's a possibility of actually losing).

What IS it with pool players and the need to get one over on someone? :frown:

Greed? Instant gratification? Ego? Perhaps, but a lack of class is as good an explanation as any.

It depends on your level of play. In most cases you are not playing a sucker but a "Want to be" hustler. The guy you entice into coming over and asking you to play because he thinks you are a sucker. Not exactly an innocent party. Once you have him stuck you keep him chasing his money with regulating your play.

That is what giving weight is for, so you can play your best and have a pool of players to play with. This is especially true when you play at your home pool room. You want to walk in any time and have a bunch of guys you can play with. Of course this is all moot if you are just playing for fun all the time.

Sets

Not for big money anymore, but I will frequently drop the first set in order to 'hook' a player. If they beat you once, they always think they can beat you.
You end up making more money than you would have.
