Introducing "The Beast XL" Cue Building Lathe & new Dual Live Center concept

Here is a short video of the Beast XL in action, it's almost done, and I will post couple more visions tonight cutting down a square into round
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kNWiI9pj70U
The Beast XL comes with a 70" bed with 65" supported linear rails, 65" gear rack and 67" independent direct drive lead screw Auto Feed system
This unit comes standard with a big bore headstock, this specific unit was customized with a Taig mill headstock with 3/8" ER collet dead center drive.
The Beast is also available in standard length of 55" too.

The new live center I just had made is a 4 in 1 live center ( 7/16" concave live center, 7/16" 60deg live center, 1.125" 60 deg live center, and 1.125" concave live center)

Best Regards

That looks real solid Bassel, nice job.
Might be a good idea to make the video landscape mode.

It was taped with a spy camera.
Jeesh, it's like looking through a pin hole.

It looks good from the picture and video I think.
As with any machine, you don't know until you've used it for a while.

My bad, I took that video really late that night. I just did couple of videos cutting down a square to round. It truly shows how solid and smooth the carriage travel is under cutting load. With no doubt, you can take much heavier cuts the a standard dovetail carriage. I will post the links later today.
All in all, I couldn't be any happier with the performace of this Beast of a machine.
Regards

Bassel, it appears you are the cue maker of lathes. You have been finished in design many times but just keep on improving your craft.

Like Joey said however, gotta hit a few balls with it to see how it plays so to speak

Is the pictured (and video) setup ment as a tapper machine since you have the custom Taig headstock or was this just to keep TIR low on the headstock?
I guess a dual chuck headstock could be moved along the bed since the feed motor would be a independant one?
Interesting machine.

I guess it helps watching video with volme on... Had it off to keep my wife out of the picture:smile:
I can see the ballbearing resting on the tapper bare could me moved up and down to roll on the two areas on the tapper bar however the tapper bar it self seems not to be adaptive for a pro tapper for instance. How do you fine tune your tapper?
Possibly a stupid question but not that easy to see in the short vid's.

Maybe it was just my speakers. I am hard of hearing so had the volume probably turned up a bit more than a normal person. Part way thru the video,
the audio got seriously louder and just about dropped me out of the chair.

Same in my end. If you use a phone (Edit:to film) you might have your hand over the mike at one point, and then if you remove -the volume goes bananas.

The taper bar is a 4-sided taper bar. The customer specifies what type of taper bars, you can get 2 straight and 2 adjustable taper bars. The taper bar is mounted on 2 swivel axis, to change tapers, simply unlock, turn to desired side, them lock. I only had one bar installed for this video.as for the noise fading in and out, it was my hand over the microphone I guess. I did couple of more videos with my 16 MP Nikon camera, the quality should be much better on the next video

Also here are some pictues of the beast with its standard big bore headstock, it can be ordered as a tapering lathe like in the videos or a cue building lathe like in the pictures. The bed lengths available are 55" bed or 70" bed.

WOW.....takes a lot of cues to pay for that badboy....It looks like it will be a good machine, but..
How about including a higher precision router/spindle for that price? The Porter Cable laminate trimmers are not noted for great precision nor long life on the bearings when used for building cues, it could be rough for a cuemaker just starting off to to spend $$$$ on a great lathe and then have to change routers after a year or so due to bearing failure. What is the warrentee of this package? Does it cover the router and all other components of the lathe, and if so, for how long?

I'll just say that those are very good questions. You are entering the realm of Sawstop when you reach those kind of numbers for a hobbiest....

I do want to clarify, my questions where meant in general to the general machine builders, not meant to pick out Bassel or his lathes. This lathe seems very well thought out, just out of my range to buy new. I have seen the prices of everything keep climbing and I noticed that none of the lathe builders state anything about a warrentee period. If they have one, and stated it, it may help the buyer feel better protected when deciding to buy a particular make of machine at these prices.
When I spend above $100 for a tool, I alsways consider the warrentee. This is only a hobby for me, so to me this is important stuff.
Just my thoughts,
Dave

You make a good point. The warranty I offer on the all lathe 6 months on the motors (auto feed, headstock) years
Headstock, Carriage, bed, steady tests 18 months
Can't offer warranty on the router, cause the user can easily damage the bearing with very heavy cutting by an unexperienced user.
I am searching for an affordable quiet router to replace the porter cable router. The router can be upgraded to any brand the customer chooses and I would fabricate a custom bracket for that router.
There is no extra charge for customizing the router bracket, adding a different router would only cost the user only the router cost difference.
As for the overall price it's still very comparable to the competition, while offering more.

Regards
