I'm throwing his hat in again just because....

WINDCARDONA 2012!!! Everyone mobilize and lobby!!!!

this is the best choice IMO. why? he has the intangibles of a winning captain. biggest thing he has is the respect of the players

look at the ryder cup - they pick captains that are seasoned and know how to win

Grady is the perfect choice. If Bobby's selection process were used, Charlie would never be picked and Grady is a shoe-in.

I hope we do the right thing for ONCE and select Grady before he leaves us.

grady would be a perfect choice for co-captain. that would allow for some stress to be taken off him in his condition but still have a major role. BTW - Grady if u r reading this we all wish u the best

one of my favorite things to do is pop in a dvd and listen to cardone/grady commentating together on a accu stats one pocket match

My picks

Grady is a good sentimental favorite and he would be my pick if the Mosconi cup was one pocket.

That said, there is only one player that comes to mind that I would like to see in that position, Keith McCready. His qualifications, fire and desire to win would be a plus and we hopefully would get JAM (Ms Positivity) by his side. We know she would be an asset to the team also. Two positives for the price of one, maybe? They would be good for TV.

As for instructors/coaches, which I think make more sense than a player, there are 2 that should be definitely considered, Randy Goettlicher and Jerry Briesath. How many great players have those two turned out? While they would not be as good for the TV aspect, they might give us a winning team.

Empathy aside, Grady has done a lot for the game over the years, is extremely knowledgable in all aspects of the game, and I think he would do at least as good of a job as anyone that could be mentioned. I would support his nomination as MC captain. I don't know if he is or isn't a past world or US Open champion, but I do feel that he is qualified for the job.

What is the current selection process?

I am not american...

...but for american's sake..I'll go with Johnny Archer. He deserves this more than anyone else. He's strong, well organized, puts a lot of heart in this game, strong leadership abilities, strong personality, I might say.... and I think he already got respect. IMO.

Johnny is good but I fully expect Johnny to be playing in the event. How about picking someone that isn't in the running for playing.

Well...now for euro's sake. I'll keep Earl away from the table and naming him captain. What about that? At least nobody will have the guts to comment against the team...
The only problem is that the casino should reinforce the security around him...
Now serious, I think this task will be very important to him and he will try to be as calm as he can. He's not bad atitude he's just a show-off because people like that, otherwise he has the vision of the game and experience more than anyone else.

Chris

wouldn't earl make a great captain! or at least a great pirate!

2nd to none in enthusiasm and fire. he's been there, done that, and knows how to win.

It's a big gamble with Earl. Can he keep his cool when the going gets rough (or more when the crowd gets rough)? But, I'd throw the dice with Earl. Why, because Team USA needs a shake-up. Team USA has players with the potential to be historic. But it seems that each year they're very complacent. Rodney Morris is a great player but his record in the Mosconi Cup events leaves much to be desired. When he's losing, he just seems to shrug his shoulders and look bewildered. Earl could change that attitude. Let's get some brimstone and fire in there and no-one can stoke those flames and motivate like Earl.

The issue is there really are no coaches on US soil... Sure you have a lot of guys trying to make a living as instructors but not many come to mind that I would consider worthy of coaching the Mosconi team....

.

Renfro,
Grady would be GREAT!!

Mark Wilson as well - has studied pool his whole life, coached numerous pro players, and played in the first 2 Mosconi Cups himself (sank the winninng 9 ball in the VERY FIRST CUP).

I'm fairly sure the captain picks who plays next when the other team has to put up who's playing

When Efren was asked besides yourself who is the smartest player you've ever played he said Nick Varner without a pause.

I dunno Pro....great coaches are motivators, baby sitter, psychologists, friend, mentor.....but I don't think it's a must to be world champ. I do think you would need to know what it's like to be in VERY high pressure situations though. Just a thought....

G.

I agree, Gerry. Johan Ruijsink doesn't have the qualities that Bobby requires, but yet he (Johan) has seemed to be the best, so far, in European captains that was able to extract the best performance from his players, making smart decisions as to who to match with who from the American team, and finally to provide that "formidable coach" presence that the players respect. Johan is a mover and shaker, when it comes to coaching a team of pool players.

However, I know why Bobby made his list -- to help install a "filter" to ensure that cronyism and politics are minimized on the selection of a coach.

See, I thought it worked more like the Ryder Cup in golf in which the Captains don't actually choose any of the match-ups but instead more or less set their line-ups for the day or session and however they happen to match up is how it goes. I think there are a couple of exceptions like the opposing Captain picks the opponents player in a couple of singles matches or something like that.

I would like to see Mike Sigel get it. He is tough, and easily one of the greatest American players who has ever lived. I believe he would be great with the strategy of matchups. I am not sure how well liked he is but he would command respect from everyone.

I know who I don't want

as captain again for the Mosconi Cup. It's so easy with the posts of late.

The Cup should just stay squeaky clean as that is its image and any hint of impropriety should simply not be allowed.

Therefore, with all that has been said about Charlie "Chop Chop" (because he did it twice in 2 months) Williams, I hope he will never captain or play in the Cup again.

The Fix Is In

The promoter loves Charlie Williams.
I had email discussions with him, last year prior to Charlie being chosen.
He read the AZ forum and said that everything said was untrue, and haters.
Don't know what he see's in Charlie Williams.
Maybe he works for Dragon Promotions?

Mark Wilson would be a good pick...he had a time when he was the best
player in the mid west....and his personality is perfect for the job.

Nick Varner also has all the credentials.

Mark's old partner also has the parts as coach...Jeff Carter.
