Do some people not get eBay? or are they spiteful?

prulhiere cues

I run a lot of sales on eBay. It is a pretty straight forward setup. Buy it now or auction. Lets look at the buy it now and what happens there. In the last week, I had two sales on there that were non-paying buyers. If you don't use eBay, that means the commit to buy, then do not pay.The first person buys a cue on the buy it now option, then as a normal part of business, I send an invoice. two days later, and no reply, I send it again....you guessed it, no reply again. So I send a message asking them to contact me so I knew how they we proceeding and I got this reply..."I never committed to buy anything, I just asked prices. then I get two requests to pay. I don't think I want to buy anything from you" Okay, I have made a few mistakes in my life, but the buy it now option is set up to prevent this. You have to click "Buy" then confirm, then confirm again. It is actually hard to have an accident here. If you did end up doing it by accident, just say so....I'm easy going. The very next sale I had the buyer bought two cues, not one, but two!! This person is now 4 days without paying and will not return any email. Okay, I don't honestly care if someone doesn't want my cues, but STOP committing to buy them. I know I am ranting a little, and if I am wrong, and eBay is actually confusing, set me straight. It gets frustrating when you have to hold product that someone else might want because of this.

I feel ya, Prulhiere. Wish I had an answer...

Ebay has sucked big time since they quit allowing sellers the option of leaving negative feedback on scumbags like these.
You get stuck holding a cue in limbo with these kinds of non-sales until a certain number of days pass. You can pretty much tell when the winning bidder isn't going to pay. Like you said.....no answers to your messages or yeah....I'll pay Friday. Good luck with that!
I have to plug my nose and bite the big one when I list on ebay.
Sorry to hear you are forced to stop making your cues.
Take care and good luck.

I have been in business of one kind or another almost all my life. I owned a lawn service business when I was in high school employing three people and making more money then my teachers made. The one thing I have learned is, I take nothing personal and I just take the bad with the good, it is part of being in business. As far as your ebay auctions go, just report them as NPB and forget about it. I certainly would not get unset about it.

We sell on Ebay {not Pool related} and my wife just now said that she gets at least five or six a month like this. It's usually first timers who apparently don't get it that making a bid is a commitment. We're getting what are apparently scams, mostly out of the country, where we are contacted that the buyer is not satisfied and want a partial or full refund, then they don't return the goods. We've been told that Ebay is doing their best to correct this problem. Right!

Edit: Shouldn't have put buy it now. Adjusted.

I have a couple of negatives, and both are from non-paying bidders. The last one was a big seller on e-bay, go figure. How can a system be right when a person can not only refuse to pay but also leave you a negative?

Depending on when it was done, you can just call them and they will remove them if they were left by a NPB or for spite. It is not hard to get ebay people on the phone and they can help you.

You need to check this box for a "Buy It Now" when you list---

Require immediate payment when buyer uses Buy It Now.

This way, the buyer can not use the "Buy It Now" without paying first.

I understand your frustration, but the only option you have is to leave them Negative Feedback and report them to eBay and Paypal as a dead beat buyer. If you report them for non-payment you are doing the entire community a favor and if they try to leave you bad feedback eBay will delete it. If you don't do anything you kinda become part of the problem and these idiots will continue to do this to others.

People like this need to be identified so other sellers know who they are before the deal is done so that they can delete them as a buyer so they do not have the same problem.

Again I am sorry you are having these problems!!!!:(

I have to agree with the aforementioned suggestion of requiring immediate payment for BuyItNow sales. I have a requirement also in my listings that payment be made within 72 hours of the auction ending.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. For what it's worth, the answer to your question is "No, Ebay is not that difficult to understand."

Sellers can not leave a negative feedback.

That is not quite as bad as it sounds. If they don't pay you just report them and they can't from what I understand leave you a neg. If they pay and live up to their end on the bargain why would you want to leave a neg?

I looked at your auction and it says "Expedited shipping" and when you go to the shipping page it says ships in three day ofter payment.
I can see someone not understanding the ad and after they see how long it is going to take not wanting to pay up front like that. I think the way you are doing it is why you will have the occasional problem. If you choose to not meet the ebay terms you are basically committing to in the ad it's going to happen. Some people can be pretty goofy and think that the wait is an option for a special cue but they want the cue you say you are selling, nothing special and they want it now. You also say no returns. They may see that after buying and decide not to complete the deal as well. Out of curiosity, why no returns, that scares people?

You bring up a couple of good points. I never put 2 and 2 together on the expedited shipping. As far as the no returns, I take returns, I am not sure how that got clicked, it never has been marked as no return on my adds before......maybe I am the one who doesn't understand eBay...lol. I will say though, that this non-pay thing has been an issue for me all along, even when I am selling a "ready to ship" cue. I have had eBay basically tell someone they had to pay or they could be removed so they finally did, then return it as soon as they got it. It is like any business I guess....just frustrating.

Bye the way....I made those changes...thanks for the input.

I leave positive feedback right after I print my shipping labels.

All non-paying bidders go into a blocked bidders list which maybe shared

with other sellers.

At least I don't turn their information into a collection agency...yet. LOL!

I can tell you don't sell much on ebay....

The problem was, sellers held the buyers hostage with the threat of neg. So buyers never gave a neg to a seller even though they were possible screwed. Now it is the responsibility of the seller to do the best they can to be a good seller or they risk getting a neg. And like I said, if the buyer paid then they have held up their end so there is no need to give them a neg in the first place. The real risks on ebay are bad sellers not bad buyers. If they don't pay nothing is lost and you report them and move on. Between my wife and I (We each have accounts) we have about 17,000 feed backs and we are both Top Rated Sellers. I would guess you can add a few thousand to that from people who for some reason don't leave a feed back and in the beginning few did because it was kind of complicated.

We have been selling on ebay almost since it started. I am no expert but ebay is one of the best things to come along in a long time, but I don't need to tell you that I think you do very well. I just looked at the Dashboard page and they have a section that shows sales. We have between us over $225,000 in sales. Actually more then that but for some reason it only goes back to 2001 and we have been on ebay longer, since the beginning of 1999. Like I said, I am no expert but we have very very few problems.

You have been selling this long and you didn't know a deadbeat bidder can leave you a negative even if you reported him before the feedback? Do you work for e-bay? I sold around 25,000 in silver last year, what do you think their fee's were including paypal since they do own it also? They have become loan sharks with the fee's they charge!

As an extremely satisfied customer of yours, I am sorry to hear you have had problems.
Some people are impulsive, some are easily confused , and some are just plain goofy.
Once you click the Buy button it is supposed to be a legal contract for the buyer to purchase and for you to sell, unless both of you agree for it not to be!
Ebay is a great venue.
It has allowed many people an opportunity to start a business on a shoestring, but like everything , it is not perfect.
I think they should do more to contact buyers who back out and arbitrate something fair to both parties , even if it was just a misunderstanding.
I once bought something and then realised I wanted a better piece of equipment. I sent the seller an email and asked if I could give him 10% of the sale price and nullify the contract.
He was fine with that.
Perhaps you could contact the people who had purchased, and then for whatever reason did not pay, and offer them this option.
I would respectfully ask them to reread the rules on bidding, and that once they pushed the "BUY" button, they had entered into a legal contract.
Also, that you understand that people make mistakes or change their minds but that it also cost you money and time and potential lost sales to have an auction and then not get anything for it.
Hopefully they will do the right thing and work with you.
If not, try to do everything in your ads to make the above idea clear to buyers. I know it says it on the sale page but I would reiterate it in my ad.
Not everyone is a crook, sometimes you just have to give them options and they will do the right thing.
You make a great cue for cheap money, and you are punctual and easy to work with.
All the ingredients for a great growing business.
Hang in there.
I wish you all the success you dream of.
