I think we all have them. That place in the shop where all the special materials go you're hoping to save for a rainy day project of your own. I just added a piece to mine recently. Stuff is pretty cool I think.... What kind of things are in your pile (private stash)...Lets see some pics.

That looks like a banksia pod with some crushed stone and resin in the pockets ? I was given one and just turned it, but i think i am going to leave them open, i like how it looks . Do you plan to use it as a butt section?
 
Wow..I've never seen anything like that...what is that? I'm gonna sound stupid now but is that even wood?
I think anyone with trypophobia would flip at the sight of this wood...probably faint or puke on the spot..

Cool looking stuff. Makes me wonder what a butt sleeve would look like if turned from that.

Yeah, everything's better with bacon fat. Me, I'd just like to some how BBQ the thing. Normally the cleanup is easier when you BBQ!

are you saving for a knife handle or a pool cue?
either way its a fine looking piece of wood!
although i would be worried about them bugs hatching in the middle of a match...

Hi,

Here is a rod of General Electric Micarta that was used for 345 KVW Power Transmission Line Insulators on the Power Grids in the 1960s. It makes the best ferrules in the world IMO. Very hard yet very quiet which is an oxymoron. In the ferrule testing post done a few moths ago it was measured as the 2nd hardest material with Joey's Ivorx being the hardest. Nothing else plays like this, it's magic.

Every player that I have installed one on their cue has freaked out because they have to hold back and modify their stroke. The ball actually rolls farther and until they figure it out they have more cut shots than slight angle shots that they play for.

I put one on a billiard cue for a guy named Freddy and within one month nine 3 cushion players were at my shop. I am a 3 C player and using these ferrules actually extends the roll to the red ball.

I do not know of anyone else who has this material. It is unattainable and very expensive.

Yep its a banksia pod that has been professionally stabilized and then cast with a metallic blue resin to fill the holes in the pod. The resin reflects light a lot like the metallic paint used on some cars. It was round until I squared it for stabilizing and casting, so this piece is about 1.5 x 1.5 x 6 so it could be used for a butt sleeve section I think... :thumbup:

Rick that is a serious piece of micarta there.......WOW. Thanks for posting those pics.... very cool.
