Learning to shoot pool is like learning to operate a boat

A few years ago I got my first boat. A nice 18ft four winns. I read everything I could about boating and how to operate one. Hell, I raced motorcycle for years so how hard could it be to operate a boat. Plus I have been though Skip Barbers race school.

Well, reading and doing are two different things. My race experience on land was useless on the water.

Even there is "a steering wheel", a boat does not handle anything like a car.

One gets good a reading the wakes you are about to hit. And how you hit them is very important.

Even though I read everything I can about boating, it wasn't until I got on the water did I understand.

Same with pool. You can read, study, bullshit all you want about shooting pool, but until you get out there and do it, you can never learn and truly understanding the dynamics of pool. Just like I can talk like a boater doesn't make me one.

Kinda like some on where that talk like instructors, but really aren't.

I can now tell a boaters skill level by how they talk because I have real world experience to draw from. I can do the same with those on this forum. There are quite a few they have the talk, but not the walk.

So, instead of talking about pool, go play.

FWIW, last year I put in 1850 hours of pool. I did more playing than talking and it shows in my game.

Well, oh master, care to bet that every single one of the so called instructors on here can give you weight and beat you like a drum?? There's actual instructors on here that have forgotten more than you have ever known, yet you, a C player or very low B player at best, constantly want to come on here with your nonsense and try to sound like you are some kind of expert. When, in reality, you are in bad need of lessons yourself.

Geesh, already this morning you have gotten down on SpiderWeb because he called you out on some other misinformation you wrote on here. Get a clue Duckie, most of the time you have no clue what you are talking about. Grow up and actually learn something on here instead of constantly knocking those that do know what they are talking about.

You say we are trying to be big fish in a little pond. Well.... that is exactly what you are trying to do. Where we are trying to actually help others improve their game, you just want to sound important on here. That attitude is for the kiddies. Get over it. You don't sound important, most of the time you sound like a wannabe that really doesn't have a clue.

There are a lot of beginners on here searching for info to help them. Some don't know who you are. Do you even care that if they listen to half the stuff you say on here that you will actually hurt their game?? This forum is supposed to be about informing and helping others, not a "look at me, look at me" forum. You calling the actual instructors that make a living at teaching as someone not to listen to is laughable at best.

Almost everyone here, regardless of their level of play, has something of value to contribute around the tribal campfire. I thought Duckie's observations were insightful and far more valid than your snarkie comments and personally, I'd rather read what he has to say on pool than you. As to Spider, lol, I'm told he's so ate up and marginalized now that he's reduced to responding to people he knows have him on "Ignore."

That comes out to over 5 hours of pool EVERYDAY for the entire year.

Seriously? I can't imagine playing that much and I have a 9' table here at home.

Just struck me as odd, that's all.

Well said Neil.

For myself, and I think many others, I have been ignoring his ramblings as I have seen that when he is confronted with facts and or other opinions he ignores them, and goes right back into his preferred methods...arrow, HAMB, Instructors are useless, and I can do everything with Ghost-ball what else do you need!

Nothing he says is really worth the time to read or to respond too.

And it's more than likely that, having invested that kind of time, that he's gained some insight, no?

In any case, it is clear he trying to share what he's experiencing and learning along the path he's on, which is far more than many forks do who just fire off pot shots.

Then why don't you make it official and exercise the "Ignore" function this site offers? Try it, you'll like it.

That doesn't surprise me at all coming from you Lou. You also have been an anti-instructor advocate on here. That is, except for the instructors that you have actually gone to. Since you don't like what I have to say on here, please put me on ignore. I really hate giving good info to some people on here. ;)

It has nothing to do with being anti-anything. It's about you trying to be a bully.

And if you equate that into a normal work-week it is over 7 hours per day. But anyhow, its a lot of time "invested".

It depends. I know of people that have been teaching professionally for 20+ years, unfortunately each year they taught is exactly like the first year. They continue making the same mistakes, and refuse to accept it.

Just an example from public education.....

AJM > hopefully soon to be a retired professional educator.

Get off your high horse Lou, you are at the wrong end of it anyways. If you could actually read, you would know that he started the thread by trying to be a bully and I just called him on his bull. Just like I'm calling you on yours.

You tell nice stories about going to events and getting slaughtered, but other than that, you add nothing on here except knocking every little bit of instruction that comes along, no matter who gives it.

Really strange about how some people like to brag about wallowing in their own ignorance, and then knocking those actually trying to learn something of value.

I'm calling you on your own BS, Neil. Half the time you add very little to the forums yourself. A lot of people have commented on the negative attitude that you have and it clearly shows in threads like this one.

While Duckie may not be the best player here, he is trying to improve and possibly share something he learned along the way. Perhaps the most insightful snippet he said might be "instead of talking about pool, go play." That's not rocket science but it's something we should all be doing more of. You included.

So why aren't you out playing some instead of trolling here??

The best way to learn something is by doing as correctly stated, but pool / boat operating metaphor makes no sense at all.

If you play against an evenly matched opponent for two hours, it might be safe to assume you played for half the time while watching the other half.

If you play by yourself, and playing as your opponent, two actual hours of playing would result.

If you would count the first as playing for two hours when in fact you only played one hour, you could also say that you played two hours of pool in one hour of time while playing both opponents.

And another possibility, what if he played all the innings of a 4 player ring game?
