What everyone's obsession with Ebony? I see so many cues with Ebony, they all start to look the same to me. Granted, some woods look pretty good next to Ebony, but I see the same ole patterns using Ebony that it gets boring to me. Some Ivory and Ebony cues look nice, but I would not own one. Just like black cars, I would never own one.

Black, to me, is a non color. My personal taste in cues is a taste for Southwestern styled cues and colors. I like cues that took a little imagination and artistry rather than just cookie cutter patterns.

I just don't understand this love affair so many people have with Ebony cues???
 
Not all ebony is just black. You might have a look again at some of the ebony cues. You will find some variety there that you may not have noticed before if all you were expecting was black.

I believe ebony was used a lot in butt sleeves and points at one time because it is easier to hide the imperfections of inlays in ebony. In fact...probably you will notice that very often the most intricately inlaid cues even still today are often ebony....and I imagine that it may be at least in part for some of the same reasoning. A cue maker could speak to these points better than me though....

Not sure what you are asking here? Why doesn't everyone like what you do? Personally I wouldn't put a sweater on a dog...but that's just me...:smile:

Ebony is a more expensive wood and more time is needed than most woods from tree to cue. Designs however are endless.

One of my favorite Old School cue makers was Harvey Martin who except for a handfull of cues made Birdseye Merry Widows with a wrap.

If all liked the same and made the same life would be boring. My car is gold in color, by that description would you like or dislike it?

Reminds me of my sister.

Many years ago she came home very excited. She said she saw the greatest car and she had to have one! She was just overwhelmed with the beauty of this car! It was her dream car!

So, of course I had to ask her what kind of car it was that was the object of her desires.....

She said "It was red.".

Hi,

In building cues my favorite forearm material is ebony but like Snapshop points out there needs to be variety and you should not fall in love with one wood for sure. Even though it lacks color and it is black, you need to be very careful when you prep and are ready for clear coat because the slightest little imperfection gets amplified. It like keeping a black car clean, it show everything.

It is also very nice for point stock and butt sleeves combined with other woods.

Ebony also is a great wood for milling inlay pockets as it cuts so clean and holds very tight dimensions.

If it is gold, I would probably like it. The first time I saw a Lexus 350 SC in Gold, I fell in love with it!!!

Sorry OP, but I laughed on this one!

As far as the use of ebony, doesn't it also have to do with the "dense" properties and how it plays "stiffer" than other woods??? Granted, if a cue is cored, this becomes null and void...So, it may not just be about the "aesthetics"...
 
To be honest, I think it's the same reason a lot of men like black cars. Manly color, no? A bit of midnight and mystery? The same thing probably holds true for cues. If you survey everyone on how many cues have ebony, I think it will be the majority. Personally, I like ebony, rosewood, zircote, and snakewood. But if limited to one cue...... It would have points and butt sleeve with ebony.
 
If black works for Dale Earnhardt, Darth Vader and Ninjas.....than that is good enough for me.
