Does this annoy you?

Better players will often use funsies games for practicing or experimenting with certain shots. Sounds like he was working on safeties. Bet him 5 bucks
a game and see if you still WAX him 2 to 1. He isn't going to show you top speed por nada. The guys that are better than me that I bet with I don't play funsies with. Because I know they won't give me their full attention.
It sounds like your opponent has been able to separate his ego from his
game and is playing funsies just for that, fun. While you are trying to satisfy
your ego by waxing him 2 to 1. imho

You missed.

No. At one time I had a guy doing this in 9 Ball about 14 years ago. He would rather play safe than shoot easy shots and I LET it bother me. After a week or two I shook the sharking, played my game and never looked back at him. It was a good experiance.

Maybe you should ask her what she meant.

I don't mind it when my opponent has no recourse but to do a safety. I also don't mind if they sink a few balls and then pull a safety. Basically so long as the game is moving I'm ok with the safety. But, It drives me bonkers if the gross majority of the shots are safeties and they can't or refuse to attempt a shot. We aren't on a quarters table and I don't like to drag out the game. Am I wrong to think if someone is this good on safeties then, they should be able to pocket something too?

Isn't every shot is on the table doable? :help: (Sorry off topic)

and btw I know I have more issues than Sports Illustrated:rolleyes: But that's just what I think.

I love getting into safety battles.

One of my favorite things is the opportunity that getting out of a great safety presents. I've done some amazing things simply because I have been in difficult situations. I would have never tried those things if I hadn't needed to.

If this kind of play bothers you, I am sure that you can find several bars where they don't allow that kinda dirty pool. Some guy named Steve-Joe is pro'lly lookin' fer a game right now.

2 to 1 kind of indicates that I got out of quite a few, doesn't it?

A question for you...how good are you at getting out of safeties? If the answer is anything less than 'superb', you should thank people who play safeties against you when you are sparring with them.

No problem. I just put some Bandini on the cue ball.

One of the worst strategies in 8 ball is to run all but 1 or 2 balls. If you are playing a good player, most likely, you just lost. Personally when I play for funsies, I play just as I would for money. When I am in these funsies games, I play just as hard, seldome letting up. If you don't practice safes and such when it counts, in a serious game, you won't be able to excecute.

My suggestion would be to take a different strategy. If you don't like getting safed all the time, quit running all but 1 or 2 balls off the table when you can't get out. Just a suggestion.

Thanks. I actually went and read the rest of the thread and now wish I hadn't replied at all, considering the OP has gone out of his way to insult everybody who didn't coddle him. Maybe someone put some Pr!ckini on him.

Have fun!

Could you please give one example of me insulting someone in this thread?

After reading through all of these replies in this thread I am left with this feeling;
Defensive players enjoy Chess
Offensive players enjoy Checkers

Nothing wrong with either one, the world takes all kinds.

I guess I'm a Chess player.

I'm an offensive player and like chess.

Defensive players are just dullards. At everything, probably.

Why are you so concerned about whether a person is playing safety. Every thread about safety play you appear and insult them. Why don't you play your game and not worry about it. At the end of the day the person WHO IS AT THE TABLE is the person who decides the shot. If you are sitting that is because you missed. Maybe you are the dullard for not potting a ball.

Playing safety when there is no recourse simply means that person effed up earlier in the game.

Safeties should be played when you do have recourse, but don't have a reliable way to win the game. Shooting in the open balls only to force your hand into playing safety isn't an ideal way to shoot.

Agreed

Hey D.
Strangely enough as of last night. I think I am better than I believed I was. After tonight we will be official APA members  in a 9 ball league. For the last week Hubby and I have been practicing 9 ball. He likes to play lots of safeties. And I must also agree on this one. It's so freaking cool to see him drop his jaw when I get out of them. My confidence on banks has improved 10 fold easy. Because in 8 ball l could always cut something into a pocket, but when faced with a bank I had 25% success rate. As of today I can say I'm closer to over 50% success rate. So Yes! I do so enjoy that HAHA feeling I did it:cool: - Add to that positioning myself well for the next shot. I :love::love: it.

Because you asked I will thank people for their safety. Although they annoy me I don't complain out loud or throw a tissy. At best I'll do "Ughhh" and curl my lip.

I loved what one of the others posters said too. They will play a safety until he knows he can run the whole table. WOW! I understand he is a pro. That's just amazing to me:eek:. However, I'll be starting league as a 2 tonight. The guys with advanced levels love going against me because I'm always having fun. When I get on the table I look for 3 balls I can shoot. After I sink #1, I look for another set of 3 and so on. I have so much to learn, I'm still working on draw, banks and cb placement of my next shot. 99% of the safeties I try are an EPIC fail . Maybe in the future I will change my views on safeties or maybe I'll just "Thank you"

No worries, I think when he said earlier in this thread that some of the people that post here are whats killing pool he was just making a self observation.

To tell you the truth I don't mind if he thinks I am a "dullard" or whatever for the way I play the game. I love to run balls and string racks but I play percentages as best as I can. If the shot seems like a bad idea I come up with a better one. But you are right about what you said, why worry about the other persons style of play. It does you no good to sit there and bellyache about them.

If do find it odd though, I have been called many things throughout my life but this is the first time I have ever been referred to as a dullard! And what makes it funnier is that it came from a British person!!!!

Thaiger, keep shooting those fliers, I'm sure the folks that collect their money from you appreciate it!

Its funny. If I am playing in league/tourny against somebody who I know dislikes safety play I will actually play more to try and take them out of the game. I have seen some players implode this way and I always get a chuckle out of it.

Because NOBODY is drawn to the game because of safety play.
