I've been using an Orange Crusher, but just received a McDermott NG05 today.

Haven't used it yet but looking forward to tonight.

I say you can find whatever you're looking for for a pittance. This is because success in pool is derived from the following three elements:

1) 99% skill
2) .08% whatever piece of leather (or other material) is on the end of your cue
3) .02% other miscellaneous factors

Should you feel that reason numbers 2 & 3 are the culprit as to what ails your game, please refer to reason number 1.

It is for this reason that I consider the following to describe an ideal cue:

1) made of wood, preferably, but not necessarily
2) leather tip, preferably bovine
3) see reasons 1 & 2

The far better poll and topic to query is not what instrument do I break with, but the following:

1) what game am I playing:
1-A: if onepocket, don't need a fancy, high dollar break cue of any kind
1-B: if 14.1 continuous pocket billiards, see 1-A
1-C: Rotation based games - break cue not necessary, but a hard tip may be of some utility according to some, though if you plan on using a controlled and highly effective soft break, don't worry wasting your time or money on anything concerning this thread, instead, refer to the bible as written by Corey Deuel and Donnie Mills

2) What is the proper form for a good break - observe Shane Van Boening for answer here

3) Practice.

Now, for my formal recommendation for a great jump break (audience holding breath): Player's Jump Break (GASPS!!!). It's cheap, straight, and has been getting the job done for me for 10 years now.

Cheers all...

I'm curious what the other 0.9% is? :grin-square:

Hehe, more on topic, I have a Gulyassy Orange Crusher and it's a nice break cue with a Samsara tip. He even occassionaly runs specials on them.

break cue

Look into joss, jerico, orange crush, stinger, all are good...mezz is good but pricey..u can get a cheaper custom break cue or jb from a custom cue maker...I have a jerico thumper cocobolo j/b and joss thors hammer...going to place a order j/b with josey cues soon as I get enough funds....good luck...

Interesting that yours has a samsara tip. My Orange Crusher only has the ferrule tip combo phenolic.

I used all Mezz break cues except the DualForce break jump. Well, the DI-R shaft did impress me a lot but other than that I don't like any of them. They break quite great but require me some power on the shot to spread balls out.

I've heard a lot of good things about Samsara tip and what is called "Effortless break" but I never believed that a tip could possibly affect so much on breaking until that day came. My frd replaced the fenolic tip with Samsara tip on his cheapy Chinese j/b cue (Jianyang brand) that he bought off Ebay for 50$ and gave it to me to try out. I started to break like I always do and guess wat? The cb jumped off the table and flew to other table. I couldn't believe that, the cue hits like a rock with just a minimum effort.

My opinion, just grab any break cue you like and change the tip to Samsara. You would never regret doing that.

I have been using the Pechauer break cue and it works wonders for me and the people who I have let use it. It is front weighted so you don't need to have a big power break to get good spead. I would suggest considering that one as well.

I second that. Because it's front weighted I can keep my tip down like Mike Sigel.

Hrm, that is odd. I know I confirmed with Mike when I was on the phone with him that it was a Samsara, not sure if he changed mine or not. When I got the cue, I thought it had a phenolic one piece tip/ferrule because the side of the samsara tip is so black it blends in perfectly with the ferrule. Looking at it closely though, you can see the laminated rings of the tip and where the tip meets the ferrule.

To the OP, it looks like Mike is out of stock on the Orange crushers for now.

Gulyassy Orange Crusher.

...And it's bright orange, so no one will steal it!

I second this (third this? fifth this? not sure how many votes for the Orange Crusher).

I have one weighted at 21oz, and it's definitely rear-weighted, which I like. With that weight favoring my grip hand, I can really swing it. I don't like forward-weighted cues because they feel like I'm pushing a long steel bolt or piece of rebar through my bridge hand.

What's also great about the Orange Crusher is the Shaft Freeze that Mike applies to the shaft. It's unbelievable smooth and non-tacky; it almost makes the shaft feel as if it were coated with silicone, except the finish is obviously dry.

I like the orange color, but obviously "construction orange" isn't for everyone. What is great about it is that you can see it from across the room, in case anyone walks off with it.

And the tip is a Samsara. Because Mike does such a great job at smoothing and blending the edge of the Samsara to his phenolic ferrule, one will think it's a one-piece phenolic ferrule/tip combination. You have to look *real* close to see the seam. Under a strong light, you'll see the slight difference in "black" where the Samsara meets the ferrule.

I also have a Fury JB-series jump/break combo, but I was looking for a heavier dedicated break cue, and I found it in the Orange Crusher.

Good thread. Did a lot of research and chatted with some people whose opinion I respect quite a bit. It came down to the BW break/jump that billiards.com apparently has made for them by Lucasi (??), Tiger IceBreaker, Rick Mace or Andy Gilbert. Found an Andy Gilbert 4 point purple heart (new) with a local custom cue guy for $450 I'm going to pick up tomorrow. He also has some from Diveney and Stacey but the Gilbert looks like the best deal. Seems like Gilbert is well respected so even if I decide on something else down the road, I should be able to recover most of my investment.
