That is a major problem with this sport ever getting huge. We need the general public understanding the game we play, and for decades rotation pool has been played and the general public don't care for the game and still have no clue how it is played.

We cannot expect them to change, things have been this way for decades already, time to wake up. We need to change this game to what the general public understand, what they like, and what they play, 8-ball. The only way this sport is getting bigger and getting out of its rut is if it can start to attract the attention of the people who are "not" rabid pool fans. We need to extend the appeal and viewership beyond the small pool community of pool fanatics.

There's why people don't watch it. It's a common, glaring flaw in pool matches. It's pretty bad when you have to turn the sound off to avoid the annoying "commentary".
 
If we start judging society, any part of it, by youtube comments then we're really in trouble.
 
The rules of 9/10-ball and 8-ball are equally simple.

But it's easier for the public to follow 8-ball on TV...unless they're willing to memorize the colors of the first 10 balls (they aren't). It's a lot easier to see stripes and solids.

I wish Ewa Lawrence would commentate every match. She commentated an ESPN match (sorry, don't remember which one) and she was 10 times as good as any other I've heard. It also helps the sport when the camera turns on her :smile:

Wow, was it really that confusing to you what the point of this post was? Everyone else understood the post, even if they do not all agree with the point made. But you actually did not understand what you were supposed to get from the post and decided to reply about how much you "don't" get it?

The reality (whether people want to recognize it) is that the public has never accepted or understood the games that the pool world has tried to push into the mainstream for the last few decades.

People who actually took the time to go to a pool match on youtube and attempt to watch it, and that took enough time to also read the comments and give their own opinion on the comment have said something that the pool world "should" take notice of as maybe being an issue. These people who are actually going to a pool video on youtube and attempting to watch it are likely more in tune with pool then Joe Blow on the street and they are STILL saying they don't understand the game. Something it wrong there, it is apparent, but the pool world yet again says "nah, we are doing nothing wrong, the rules are easy, it is there fault, we are not going to change" and thus nothing WILL change in this sport.

There's no need to make a new game. Just play 8 ball on TV! It's what the general public knows as "pool". Get some good commentators to discuss what's going on in an easy to understand matter without being too wordy, and people will catch on. They can start to pick up the strategies that are involved with 8 ball, along with the correct rules.
 
I don't think Alvin is a pool guy and is more of the tech guy that sets up the streams and keeps the whole thing running smoothly, why they make him sit on the mic alone to mostly just read comments from the stream chat has always made me scratch my head.

That being said the inside pool streams are still the best quality out there, a few are catching up but i don't think anyone has passed them in image quality and camera placement yet.

In this case, it would have helped if the commentator explained the rules, talked of the safety battle & why they were going on, etc. But even then, let's face it...to most of the public, pool is not exciting to watch.

BTW, I did watch the match. Loved the battle!

Gotta love the top rated comment... This is what I'm refering to. I don't understand the title of your thread. But I don't feel like watching the entire 2 1/2 hour video to try to understand. It would have been nice if you would tell us when this comment was made. I don't disagree with your underlying point that rotational pool is not very understood by the non pool playing public. But, in general, pool is too boring for the average person. If you haven't noticed pool has been dying a slow death for the last 20 years except for the cult following it has.
